I smiled so hard when you said "I can't handle this" and "This is too much!!" Imagine what old bastards like me did, the first time we heard it, all those years ago! It makes me so, so happy when a beautiful young man like yourself can love this music like I/we do! Neil Peart dying was a great loss: he was a great musician, writer and poet. Bands like Rush will never come our way again...

Haha! "I can't do it! It's too hard!" Yeah, this song is an aural assault on your brain. Give it another listen on your own and just surrender to it. The lyrics (based on an unfinished poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge) essentially speak about a mythical place called Xanadu, which offers eternal life to those who find it. The protagonist in the song finds what he seeks, but gets more than he bargained for. Eternal life, yes. But also a prison from which he cannot escape. Now he spends his days waiting for the world to end so he can rest at last. This is a song about seeking a prize, and then finding out that it's not all that you thought it would be.

Uncounted hours of practicing to achieve that level of skill to make it look so easy. They are every bit as good live as they are in the studio. The story is based on an old poem "Xanadu" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. He was unable to finish his version as he was interrupted by "a man from Porlock" so Neil wrote some more.

LOL, love the comment, "I want to see how three people sound like eight people." Rush employed foot pedals to both play bass (you can sometimes see Geddy looking down under his keyboard when he's playing synth so he can line up his feet to play bass pedals), and to trigger effects and tracks. This is what added a massive amount of depth to the music and allowed them to replicate the sound of overdubbing tracks on the studio versions. I did tell you this song would change how you thought about music! And you just have to see it live to believe what's possible. THANK YOU for reacting to it!

Awesome reaction!! When you tackle 2112, I recommend the studio version from 1976, this was the one that put them on the map as pioneers of prog metal. Because it is such a cohesive story and because what they achieved in the studio was perfection. They normally would do a shorter, abridged version or just excerpts When they performed it live, so you would be missing out on the whole experience if you overlook that classic studio album. Just my recommendation.😉👍

BY SAMUEL TAYLOR COLERIDGE In Xanadu did Kubla Khan A stately pleasure-dome decree: Where Alph, the sacred river, ran Through caverns measureless to man Down to a sunless sea. So twice five miles of fertile ground With walls and towers were girdled round; And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills, Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree; And here were forests ancient as the hills, Enfolding sunny spots of greenery. But oh! that deep romantic chasm which slanted Down the green hill athwart a cedarn cover! A savage place! as holy and enchanted As e’er beneath a waning moon was haunted By woman wailing for her demon-lover! And from this chasm, with ceaseless turmoil seething, As if this earth in fast thick pants were breathing, A mighty fountain momently was forced: Amid whose swift half-intermitted burst Huge fragments vaulted like rebounding hail, Or chaffy grain beneath the thresher’s flail: And mid these dancing rocks at once and ever It flung up momently the sacred river. Five miles meandering with a mazy motion Through wood and dale the sacred river ran, Then reached the caverns measureless to man, And sank in tumult to a lifeless ocean; And ’mid this tumult Kubla heard from far Ancestral voices prophesying war! The shadow of the dome of pleasure Floated midway on the waves; Where was heard the mingled measure From the fountain and the caves. It was a miracle of rare device, A sunny pleasure-dome with caves of ice! A damsel with a dulcimer In a vision once I saw: It was an Abyssinian maid And on her dulcimer she played, Singing of Mount Abora. Could I revive within me Her symphony and song, To such a deep delight ’twould win me, That with music loud and long, I would build that dome in air, That sunny dome! those caves of ice! And all who heard should see them there, And all should cry, Beware! Beware! His flashing eyes, his floating hair! Weave a circle round him thrice, And close your eyes with holy dread For he on honey-dew hath fed, And drunk the milk of Paradise.

I love to see the "younger generation" react to the music of all these bands I was lucky enough to see loads of them perform live in the 70's, 80's and 90's. Enjoy the era when music was organic, man. 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼

Telling a story. That’s what it’s about. In the beginning of this I can imagine the traveler walking though lush jungle only to finally find Xanadu. It feels like I’m inside a fantasy painting with caves of ice, frozen mountain tops and the flowing river Alphe. Then I feel the pain and weariness of his imprisoned immortality. I love the fantasy period of Rush. No one did it better.

I've watched about 20 or 25 reactions to this tune and no ones seems to notice Alex's transition from 6 string to 12 string there at first, probably because most people have their eyes closed and are trippin' hard to the music, which I totally understand, but what Alex is doing is HARD man. Smashed the like button so hard I need a new mouse.

Rush definately takes you on a rollercoaster ride with each piece. This was my first concert at 17 years old. Can you imagine watching this with the lazers & lights flashing to the beat overhead while the music went through your body? Few people talked when they left the concert - we were just wiped out - just trying to keep on our feet & get to our cars!

This is a great choice to watch live. You get to see Neil play six different instruments (counting the entire drum set as one), Getty four (plus singing), and Alex three. And they're so good at it that in the middle of an incredibly complex piece they're joking and screwing around on stage. Unbelievable.

In the early days, Rush opened for KISS on more than one tour. KISS was partying with groupies and stuff, RUSH went back to their rooms and watched TV. They were all parents at a young age and really were not into the rock star party scene. Probably why they have been able to kick it so hard for so long. Serious musicians and good family men who remained down to earth.

You've entered somewhere that you will never want to return from,,welcome to the RUSH enigma. The harder you listen & the deeper you go, the more you will find. I've been listening to RUSH since 1982 & from 1982 for 15 years I was happily lost in the genius of this trio. Not caring to listen to any other music, not wanting to. Always new discoveries be it in Neil's sublime lyrics to Gedi's in the face base, it was a wonderful time of my life. Wonderful people & fan participation were all a part of the love. When you decide to listen to 2112 live version the play between Alex and the audience was electric, you went home buzzing from the adrenaline deafened by the music and without much of your voice left, wicked!!!! Your at the beginning of a journey you'll never regret! Enjoy friend.

Glad you like it and another generation gets to enjoy what we've been listening to since the 80's. Live sound from the 80's. Three guys. Those chimes and instruments, one guy. Those guitars and keyboards with the feet, one guy. Bass, keyboards, vocals one guys. No many bands would even put in the effort to do it this correct today. Once you're done with the music, embrace the lessons and stories in the lyrics.

Love seeing reactions to the live version of Xanadu by Rush. Extremely talented musicians in every single way. Geddy is totally using the Moog synthesizer. The camera shots doesn't show it, but he also plays the synthesizer with his feet when he's away from the keyboards. Also, the guitarist, Alex, also plays the synthesizers with his feet, next to his foot pedals. Pure multi-instrumentalists from the whole band, which is why they sound like an orchestra, even though there's only 3 of them.
