My son and girlfriend attending an art school in Savannah were in that city when Damon filmed "Bagger Vance". He calculated what his chances were, I suppose. Then he "had to" endure a lecture by some rapper during Real Time. I would have told the rapper: "Instead of lecturing me about saying the n-word once, look at your own lyrics and the f-word that you use all the time." As one can imagine, the f-word is to gays what the n-word is to the Black.@@paulavery5889

I guess so but do we want every actor to be Daniel Day Lewis, like its one of those things that makes a certain amount of sense to him as an individual but if you look at what acting becomes at his level, ultimately there is a whole audience that wants to know you personally, that's part of Hollywood. Press tours. That's essentially part of the job. So this idea where you won't have a public persona, is just not realistic.

TYT is about as left-leaning as there is, and they had a segment saying pretty much the same thing as Maher about the backlash to Damon's anecdote. When someone recognizes a failing in their habits and resolves to correct it, you don't beat them down for taking too long, you embrace them for having the maturity to learn, adapt, and grow. I mean, it's fair to question why it took this long - maybe we can learn something from that inquiry. But you ultimately need to accept a good end-result as a win, thank the convert for making the effort to grow, and then collectively move on to the next battlefront.

@Wandering Wombat but my fam in Kansas thinks there’s this huge “immigration” problem and Mexicans are awful people because they have never left Kansas. I don’t get how fly over country thinks they are right about everything when they’ve never left their state. Also, Bill wouldn’t blame Trump for everything. I’ve watched ever single episode, he gets on the Democrats like no other. I can’t think of another talking head that criticizes the left like him. Hell, he had Steve Bannon on his show, Grover Norquist, Ben Shapiro. And before you got on me, I’m a registered independent. I’ve been to 49 of 50 states, except Alaska, served in the Marine Corps in Afghanistan, now working DoD on active service member housing. The far left and far right have wayyyy more in common than you’d think. They both create issues out of thin air and try to fix what ain’t broken (defund the police / build a border wall). Most Americans are right down the middle, just tryin to work hard and feed their families. That’s the point of this piece on Matt Damon. The left is continuously focusing on stupid celebrity issues and police shootings (which total 1000 per year) instead of issues that affect all Americans (Inadequate access to healthcare, food scarcity, clean water, safe good paying jobs, reasonably priced housing). We need to come together as a country and see each other as Americans, not see each other as our race/skin color.

Damon had to publicly 'dump' her so that everyone everywhere would know that it wasn't him being unable to commit or wanting to cheat/play the field, but instead she was getting dangerously close to criminal proceedings. Matt Damon was on the Hot Wings challenge on KZread and had such an honest answer to the question why doesn't hollywood make good movies anymore. It was a straightforward answer that made complete sense without blaming a pandemic.

Damon is wrong on that count. Films from original screenplays are being released in theaters and on streaming every year; that's fact, not opinion. Great films, whether original or adapted, are released every year by Hollywood yet many of them aren't being seen enough due to the minority of mass appeal blockbusters like the Marvel films. Original films deserve support and to not be stigmatized by labels like "Oscar bait", but cinema has always flourished and up to the present. Hollywood isn't dead.

@@proof.17films For the record, OP did a shitty job saying what Damon was actually talking about. The question was more about why passion projects/slower dialogue heavy movies have taken a backseat to the gaudy, extravagant $100M+ movies, not that they don't exist. His answer is exactly what OP said, and he specifically brings up Behind the Candelabra, which is a very niche audience and was still a $25M budget, but is only ever going to make like $5M maximum on box office, and so DVD was necessary for movies like that one in particular or something like Shawshank Redemption which flopped in theaters but is now considered top 10 all time. It's not that good movies don't exist, it's that the majority of movies are very much copy-paste plotline cliches and stick the "hottest" name you can in the starring role, and you make profit regardless if the movie is good or not. But, I hate ppl saying there are no good movies out there when Parasite, Us, Midsommar, the Menu, Top Gun Mav,...etc came out in the last 3-5 years. There are plenty of good ones, but the market is definitely oversaturated with lazy, money-grabbing nonsense.
