    I am a First Generation American. I came to this country (legally) from Nigeria in 2004. America has NO IDEA how lucky it is. You are all beyond blessed. Your country has every type of weather and landscape. Your country has had no major wars on it since the 1860's. You have so many jobs that I see restaurants closed because they can't find workers. Do you know how unusual that is? Anyone willing to do hard work here can find a job. Even if someone is broke here, you have welfare and shelters and kitchens with free food. Nobody starves to death here. If you don't like the laws, you can go to a different state where laws are different and more favourable for you. You can be man or woman, black or white, even straight or gay, from any family or ethnicity, and most people respect you if you carry yourself with honour. You can practice all religions or no religion, and people respect your choice in these matters. No matter who is president they must leave after 8 years and after 4 if the citizens choose. Police are held to such high standards that if any are caught on camera doing wrong, there are national protests 24/7 media coverage of the wrongdoing. In much of Africa, the police are a gang you pay off to leave you alone. If a husband here brutalizes his wife or children, he can be arrested. In many places this is accepted. If there are chemicals found in your water or rivers, there is huge outcry on the news. In many places in Nigeria the rivers flow with trash and oil. You all simply do not know. It is not just Nigeria. Much of the world would give anything to have what you take for granted. And all you do is fight with each other over differences that seem big to you because all the big things are going so well that you have nothing else to justify your hatreds.

    As I just told another person on here, I think a lot of forces want people to think there's a big difference between someone like you and my grandparents coming from Ireland in the 1920s. I think it's BS and our melting pot tradition is worth defending. Appreciate the perspective.

    My man! Thank you for the post as it was a pleasure reading it. I tell my kids that they are 1%ers. There are almost 8 Billion people in this world and we have it better than almost all of them! How freaking great is that? Yet, we find a way to bitch about EVERYTHING. I believe that we have it so damn good that people have to invent crap to bitch about. The non-western world doesn’t even have time to laugh at our stupidity because they are busy trying to survive and like you alluded to…find clean water to drink!

    Hi - I am first generation too. My mom would tell me how if she had stayed in war torn London (after WWII) as a member of the lower-classes the best she could have hoped for was to own a tea shop. In America she earned her PhD at the age of 70 from UCLA! She became a real estate broker and made lots of money with an apartment building! She and my Polish Dad came here legally and worked. My mom taught until the age of 80. My dad continued to work into his 70's as an engineer. He achieved a middle-class lifestyle after coming to America with only $500 to his name. Immigrants strive and achieve.

    I went to the wedding of a friend from high school two years ago, and her parents came to the United States from China a few decades ago, and during the father's wedding speech he went on a detour about how thankful he was to the US for taking his family in and giving them the opportunities that it has, and how proud he was to be an American citizen now. Not at all what I was expecting to hear during the wedding speech, but man if it wasn't heartfelt.

If you account for relative birth rates, the number is less than 1 in 40, but not anywhere as low as 1 in 4000. That low a probability would mean that the fertility everywhere else needs to be 100x what it is in the USA.

Obviously when you go to third-world countries you're going to think it's the bee's knees but we were never supposed to be a third-world country. Go to our first-world counterparts and see how healthy, safe, educated, and happy many of them are. Being born in a country that doesn't even offer universal healthcare is not winning the lottery. At a Latino festival last weekend, they had a parade of flags--carried by elementary school children--celebrating all the countries of north and South America. As the kids went across the stage, waving the flags, people cheered--at various levels of course, some quiet, some loud. The kid with the Mexican flag came out, and the cheering erupted wildly with whistles and shouts, which was moving. Then came the white kid holding the US flag--and the cheering went up a notch. It was incredible. The sense of gratitude and well being was huge, and I could imagine the same scene unfolding in some universities and cities where Americans would burn the US flag instead. The cheering was sincere, non-ironic, non snarky, and not hip. Maybe this is the unexpected gift of immigration--the rejuvenation of everything we once believed in.

    He went way too easy on the left in this one. Dems have been screaming about stolen elections and illegitimate president since Gore and its never stopped. We went through 4 years of Russia stole the elections and Trump is Putin's illegitimate puppet for the left to now cry foul over Trump saying it was stolen from him. Its wrong when both sides do it. If your going to go after Trump for it (which is fair) at least admit your side had done this too and way too often.

    There's a phrase we have all heard countless times.. it's a little cringe maybe? "If you can't laugh what can you do eh?" I have been using it MORE recently. I can't help but feel that It may NOT have been a rhetorical question.... one that has been answered all too well in the last ten or fifteen years..... You can take the world really personally, lose all perspectives and end up on twitter. I think it's a warning... laugh or turn into a monster. as Lord Meltchett once said - though very sarcastically, as he was the one being laughed at - "Thank god for the gift of laughter". Without it we would be all unhappier, and quite possibly insane

    Most of what he said about Republicans is correct for the establishment, but wrong for Republicans - especially Trump supporters. Yes, Trump has said more dumb things than I can count. However, many of his points come from left wing talking points instead of facts. Even though I disagree, I am willing to give him saying Trump attempted a coup because its all in the way you view it. As I have learned from everyday non-political interactions, two people can view the same thing but have completely different ways of describing it. While I think "coup," is an inappropriate word to use, those who take everything Trump says, and the tone he says it, literally, could easily view it as a coup. But you can't start complaining about Republicans denying elections, when every time Democrats lose, they do the same. I don't like it when Democrats do it, and I don't like it when Republicans do it. Most Republicans I know do not subscribe to the idea that 2020 was stolen. They just have questions because there was a lot of strange things going on compared to previous elections. I am also getting sick of Republicans saying, "we are not a democracy," as well as Democrats mocking them for it. We aren't a democracy, but a republic using democratic methods to form our government. A true democracy is mob rule. If we were a true democracy does anyone thing slavery would have ended (just look at other countries)? Prohibition would have ever been a thing? Civil rights would have ever been passed? Not likely. Or at least not as early as they were. As far as separation of church and state goes, it doesn't exist in the constitution. That is something from a letter that Thomas Jefferson wrote in response to a person who wrote him about their town making the Quaker religion (if I remember correctly) the towns official religion. Jefferson was pointing out that the federal government can't establish a state religion because it is much more difficult to move to other countries. He said a city doing it does not violate the constitution because you can easily move to the next town over. Even a state can because of the free movement between states. I don't remember if Jefferson addressed this, but for me, it would only be an issue if the local or state government, after establishing a religion, threatened through physical, mental, or financial force anyone who chose not to be a member of said religion or support its practices. Then I think it would be a federal issue. And the Democrats aren't wrong about this being stolen land. There was a wider variety of animal life in the Amrican continents prior to humans coming here. How many people know there was a North American lion that had similar characteristics to the African lion? They lived in the west and died out between 5000 and 10000 years ago. What event happened around the same time? Humans. So the land was stolen - from nature by humans. And everyone knows the land bridge story, but how many know about the clovis people and some clovis like artifacts being found in the eastern America's? Until we realize we know almost nothing about history, we can't get past all this.

The electoral college ensures that the citizens of Iowa (3.15 million 6 electoral votes) and Nebraska (1.9 million 6 electoral votes) have a voice in the national election as compared to somewhere like NY City ALONE (population 8.8 million). The system isn't PERFECT but it's better than based PURELY on the popular vote because if we went PURELY on popular vote, the cities would take every election. And it's not even a "democrat vs republican" at that point. It's two COMPLETELY different ways of life. To exclude rural county votes with different issues and concerns would be ignoring a small, yet important part of the population.

  • @zaco-km3su

    @zaco-km3su

    Maybe you should probably reread some history. You're a Brazilian. You know why those countries are a shitshow compared to the US? Because the US probably exploited them. Free market capitalism? The US economy is based of off protectionism. That's how they have an economy like this. The automotive industry is a great example. It would have been wiped out if it weren't for protectionism. As for capitalism, most Americans don't have any savings. Basically if something breaks, they're finished. As for healthcare, those guys have a serious problem .People that you think are wealthy....are worried that healthcare costs will leave them homeless. It's not exactly riches to rags but they probably live better off than 90% of Americans before ending up homeless. You think in the US things are the way they were in the 1960s. They're not. Also, you've heard of coops? Cooperatives? Marxists will talk a lot about them. Well, in rural areas where people are very "conservative", these people live off of coops. These coops aren't new though. Democracy sounds nice...until you realise that the way the US system is set up is not that democratic.The President of the US isn't elected by direct vote. If that's not enough you need to do a little more research and find out that in order to get elected, you need A LOT of money. Basically, the US is an oligarchy....like Russia.
