I've just started watching the Harry Potters with my husband. I remember these podcast episodes but I've always skipped the HP stuff and now coming back around. Having James explaining a lot of this to Mason is so helpful since I now have the same questions and have a good laugh at the HP based humor. Also thanks to those in the comments who clarify and correct.

This episode was hilarious. It sucks that I have to wait a year for you two to talk about Harry Potter again.

I love this podcast. \o/ To go full HP nerd about some of the things mentioned here - - Voldemort's snake isn't the one that Harry lets out in the first movie. That was a boa constrictor; Nagini was poisonous. - Hufflepuff's qualities are loyalty and hard work, or something. - You can use magic even if you haven't graduated Hogwarts, but not if you are expelled as a murder suspect, lol. - The books mention something about not being able to magic food into existence. - John Rhys-Davis is Gimli from LOTR, so I think you mean Jonathan Rhys Myers? - The first two movies are objectively the worst because the actors were all wee kids, but probably the best in terms of paying tribute to the books they're based on and not messing up important character/plot shit, according to grumpy book fans... like me. :D

the sorcerer stone wasn't dubbed, it was recorded twice. once with "sorcerer's stone" and one with "philosopher's stone"

When they suggested bad series endings, Lost was what immediately popped into my mind as well. That and maybe Terminator Salvation, but that one was more because of it clearly ending before it was meant to.

You know, technically he is not the best just because, but he is cursed to be the best. The curse put a bit more of another person's soul inside of him. He walks around overpowered due to the fact he is rolling with more than just his magic power. Also Petunia resents her sister for *dying*. They were best friends and the way she saw it was that magic killed her sister and so anything she loves that has to do with magic is be treated with extreme hatred, including the memory of her sister and Harry.

I have a lot of nostalgia for Harry Potter, that somehow carried on to the films, but I love how Mason hates it XD

I must be dumb for not understanding the aspect of the movie, the giant spider, a good mate of hagrids mind you, is all chatty then just lets the other spiders attack. Never understood why exactly if they are pals of hagrids. It’s basically a pet that went either semi wild/or just kept in the back garden of hog warts.

The title of the first book was changed in the States as well. It wasn't just the movie.

Looked up that Liam Aiken kid, he was in Leminy Snickett(? spelling) in a lead role apparently, doesnt seem to have killed himself, or others or become a coke binging lunatic, we're all good Maso, no worries.

The ship that looks like the Tantive 4 on its side is from Kotor. Rebels reused the model as a callback.

im sure it will be great, but i'm finding the trailers to be a bit too quippy for my liking you know what i mean, doctor strange was almost always a serious character. im sure the movie will be awesome tho and maybe the trailers are just condensing together it for the general audience

@@judeconnor-macintyre9874 to be fair they only blew up the planet after decades of civil war (but yeah obviously evil) and no one really knows about the dark side thing other than the jedi and elite of the empire (and even then its not like they know what it is) but yeah they do seem to be racists against non human aliens.

I don't think they built the station around the lazer......Toward the end of Episode III, we see the framework being built and it doesn't have the lazer yet, I don't think. As for what the Empire does that's bad, killing Jedi is one, sure, but to the general public, they think the Jedi turned on THEM. Remember Order 66? Palpatine convinced the senate and everyone that they had to take down the Jedi in retaliation.

as a fan of the books that disavowed the movies I actually recently revisited them with my bro. I can confirm James' point that the world and effect are excellent. i had only seen 1,2,4,5 and swore off them even though i thought five was an improvement, i was just so disappointing with story changes particularly the first couple. My brother, a staunch defender convinced me to revisit them. He re-watched them all. I said no way re-watching ones i had seen and to my surprise I can confirm there are some truly good ones. I think three was a great kids movie and also well directed performances from improving actors help it out. 6 was awesome and I was pleasantly surprised they adapted so well what is sometimes my favorite book of the series. I was infuriated that Part1 is longer than part 2 and yet ends at malfoys and not gringots. However 7 part 2, while not without it flaws, was a satisfying conclusion to the film series. To me still doesn't touch the catharsis of the books but a a good series with severalbad ones, okay ones and some i think are truly great. ranking the films 1. 6- truly amazing they adapted some of my favorite moments so well 2. 3- pretty much redeems the seriesbeginning and got me invested again 3. 7 part2- some pacing insistensy but really reaping rewards of latter movies faithfullness to book 4. 5 - first one I thought was legitimately good (though i had skipped three in that time) 5. 4 - okay to good one that i though suffered from not being abale to adapt whole story. 6. 7 pt 1 7/8. 1-2 - lame but probably good for younger kids but i had already read book and thought while everyone and lots of things look how i imagined the story was rushed. Overall good foundation, but marred by some cringey moments.

The reason why philosopher was changed to sorcerer for the American release is because we associate philosopher with people like Socrates and Plato instead of a magical person.

Ian Babcock so does every country. maybe it was changed to make it more obvious for an American audience? not the first time something like that has happened. not being anti American it's a bit condescending on the part of the film studios IMO

The snake thing I don’t think is true

as a longtime listener and fan of the show I felt it necessary to voice my concerns about the ramping up of anti clown rhetoric that that has been pervading the show. its gotten to the point where nick mason is openly calling for violence against clowns stating "you can do whatever you want" I'd like to remind you that behind every squeaky nose, furry wig, and oversized pair of shoes is a human being who is on a mission to bring joy to the hearts and minds of people everywhere. its important to differentiate between the evil clowns and the good clowns over at www.clownswithoutborders.org if you don't believe me. stop the hate. #clownlivesmatter

Coming at this late but Lucius doesn't try to kill HP in the end of the second movie. I just watched it and if you turn on captions he says "Vera-" which is the start of a different spell. Could be a retcon in the text though.

I grew up with both the books and films, but I have to say, I feel the films aren't that good. Maybe it came out too soon or maybe Warner just wanted a quick quid. Either way, they aren't as good as they should have been and I neither love or loath them, just wish they were better.
