New Puppy Tips: 7 Lessons in 7 Days

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

New puppy training may be overwhelming if you are a first-time dog parent. Potty training, crate training, puppy bite inhibition training, separation anxiety training... Oh dear, where to start with these little fluffy cute pups?
Many new puppy tips and tricks are out there, and some of them do help. Here I offer my first week puppy tips and tricks.
00:00 Intro
00:20 Bring tissue paper on the ride
01:07 Let puppy's anxiety fade
01:59 Dog proof your surroundings
02:48 Puppy training, take it easy
03:45 Start from a confined area
04:57 Puppy schedule is useful
05:45 Crate training
A couple of commonly asked questions regarding dog raw diet and crate training in the comment sections:
Q: Can you feed the dog raw or cooked bones?
A: Bones are a good source of minerals and other nutrients. Chewing on bones stimulates saliva enzymes and reduces plaque buildup. Dogs are able to digest raw food, but all raw meat has the risk of containing salmonella and listeria, which are harmful to your dog and you. However, this is still a personal choice. I only feed raw diet occasionally as a surprise treat.
But do not give cooked bones to dogs. Cooked bones are sharp and can splinter into shards that can cause damage to the dog. Cooking can also remove nutrients from the bone.
Q: Should you do crate training?
A: Dog are den animals. A dog's den is their home where they can sleep at night and raise new pups. I put blankets on the crate so that it mimics the actually semi-enclosed environment for her to feel safe. In fact, without asking, Ellie would go back to her crate to take a nap. She can choose wherever she sleeps.
Never use the crate as a punishment. That would ruin the safe place they trust. I am also strongly against putting the dog in a crate for extended period of time.
Housetraining can also be effectively done by using a crate, because dog don't like to make a mess in their den.

I got a rough collie puppy yesterday, and she threw up a lot on the way home. She then started drooling excessively, but that went away when we got her properly hydrated. Today, when in the car, she started drooling even more, and she threw up a little. I took her to the vet fearing the worst only to find out it was car sickness.

By far the best decision I made when I got my Border Collie was that play is outside, rest is inside. As soon as we go inside the house he goes to sleep. Outside we chase balls, play with sticks etc, but inside is resting time. Can't stress enough how nice this is :)

Oh, i can feel you when you speak about impatience to teach BC as much as you can xD I also heard much about the need of a fixed schedule. But I found out that at least BC are rather flexible when to eat and to walk out. Pretty much nothing changes in my dog's behaviour if I do this earlier or later than usual.

Yeah, I completely agree with the flexibility part. Ellie has been really adaptable and understanding for our laziness. Sometimes I got a pass without taking her for a walk for 3 straight days. (Well, Toronto winter is really cold!)

This video was helpful, in that it helped me understand what happened when I brought my little collie puppy home today in the car! She threw up, but before she did she was panting and drooling profusely! It made me uncomfortable because collies aren’t a drooling breed like most huge dog breeds.. then she got up and her belly tightened a few times before she yacked a whole load lol.. I wish I would’ve known to bring a bunch of paper towels, but instead I was prepared with potty training pads in case she peed 😭

I just got a 8 weeks old border collie and she absolutely does not like to be left alone in a crate or a playpen. She would start crying and hard to train her to do any tricks at the moment. Going to send her to a puppy school to learn all the basics first.

A few drops of ginger extract is good for motion sickness. In dogs as well as humans. Give it 30 minutes before the ride. Ginger Altoids also work.

My rough\border collie mix puppy Buddy is now 3 months old. He’s been great. Toilet trained and now sleeping from 11pm to 6am. Has the basic commands , sit, stay, lie down, come here , fetch, give me paw and kiss sorted and travels well after some initial anxiety. Working on his chewing the lead issue using distractions. I’d say he sleeps about 13\14 hrs a day. Just bought a large 10’ x 10’ dog run because he loves being outside, so we’ll see how that goes.

Thanks! That was a treat ball to hide her food so that she doesn't eat too fast. Good for mental stimulation, some would say. It has different shapes and sizes and are usually available in pet stores or Amazon.

I had to get a crate for my 8 month old border. He was with me 24/7 but I left him alone for the first time. I was gone an hour. In that time he destroyed my flat, the damage was unbelievable. I'm sure he used a chainsaw. The crate was in a corner of the room away from draughts, bright lights and TV etc. It was a quiet space, shaded by sofas and a blanket on top. He loved it, getting away from everything when he wanted peace and quiet. I'd never used a crate before and felt guilty at first. I never used it as a punishment and although he had the run of the house, he preferred to sleep in there. Although he turned most of my home into matchsticks, he never chewed anything again. I think that's because there was nothing left...
