After all, some meaningful comparison. To obtain the accuracy of the data, it was necessary to set all three scopes to the same magnification in this video and then assess the image quality in individual models.

  • @foxoptic5887

    @foxoptic5887

    4 жыл бұрын

    The other two were that much sharper. I had it focused as best I could, it is not as pronounced in the display but certainly doesn't appear to have as much definition as the other units. I think this is a product of lower sensor count (sensel) on the sensor vs the other two. With this said, because FOV starts very small and items appear very large on the screen it also seems like pixelization is slightly less noticeable as zooming increases to the maximum. (Once you get to the top magnification of 22X the XM seems at about the same image quality of the others at their top magnifications of 14X on the XQ or 16X on the XP)

  • @smgguns2

    @smgguns2

    @@foxoptic5887 So the XM50 is 340x240 w a 12m sensor and the XQ50 is 384x288 with a 17m sensor, this is off Pulsars sight. I really would have thought that the 12m sensor would have shown greater detail but I see what I see. And they claim a greater detection range on the XM50 but if you can't see it that well it is like a powerful spotting scope you can't see detail with. I really thought I wanted the XM, then maybe the XP but after your vid I am thinking the XQ is the best choice. Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. The more I know the less I understand or vice versa with this thermal stuff. Such a play on data and numbers!

    I believe I could have focused the XP50 a touch better and the representation would have been a bit better. (I noted this in the video) I have spent a considerable amount of time reviewing them and I would say above 7 power they are almost identical in the display in terms of resolution. Below 7 power the XP50 resolution just keeps getting better in comparison to the XQ50. The obvious gain is versatility with the XP50 having almost double the FOV at base magnification 2X vs the XQ50 3.5X This is a product of the high resolution 640x480 XP sensor vs the lower resolution 384x288 XQ. The XQ50 is a great unit for considerably less money, and it is just as effective in some scenarios, however, it's just not as versatile as the XP50.

    @@foxoptic5887 I absolutely can't disagree with the versatility. I'm mostly big fields old eyes. More magnification is a plus for me. According to my rep at Sellmark all the new XQ Thermion units also have the NETD 40mK sensor. So my guess would be all, new Thermion XP50 and XQ Thermion units, Trail 2, Accolade 2, or Helion 2 series products include the new NETD 40mK or better PICO Gen2 17µ sensors. (XP units 640x480 and XQ units 384x288) I think the XM series devices all use the more compact ATTO 12µ 320x240 sensor which was technically 60mK or better. The older Thermion XP, original Trail series, Apex XQ series, Accolade, and Helion units used the original PICO 17µ 50mK or better sensors.

It is certainly possible that they just improved the image via the 4.0 firmware update with image boost plus new high-resolution display and are still using the old sensor. It mystifies me why they would run the new one in the Trail 2 XQ units but not Thermion XQ units. The harder I look they certainly appear to be presenting it that way on their website. Either way, there certainly seems to have been a fairly noticeable visual improvement in subtle background temperatures in the new XQ as well.

    Honestly, at 50 yards I would find it to be a struggle utilizing 5.5X without some type of scanning device. For long-range and smaller work the XM50's high base magnification which also equates to much higher top-end magnification can have some advantages but I do find there to be a fair amount of trade-off in the shorter to medium ranges due to the lower sensor resolution. XM 320x240 vs XQ 384x288 I really see little advantage to the 12-micron sensor and larger lens magnification when it comes to discerning faint signals at longer distances. The XM is giving up about 33% of the sensel resolution while gaining about the same advantage in raw magnification due to the 12-micron sensor, this appears to look better at the very high end, a product of the FOV starting larger and there just being less on the display. (larger "item" edges) I find them pretty neutral at the upper end of the middle range and everything looks better on the XQ at the short to lower-middle ranges. In red hot, I get the best signal pickup from the NETD 40mK sensor on the XP50 even though it is only a 2X base magnification. Assuming the higher lens magnification should amplify the signal it leads me to believe that the higher magnification narrows the image gradient a bit too much in some backgrounds. These were all set at the same contrast levels and adjusting contrast a bit differently on the XM due to this may have helped the XM a bit but it still wouldn't have made a huge difference. If you like no less than 8X I would go with the XM because I think that is where it starts to do a bit better, again primarily due to the fact that the image starting so much larger it can go much higher before it pixelates all the way out.

    Which model do you recommend XP50 or XQ50???

    Personally of the 3 I like XP50 the best followed by XQ50 and the XM50. The narrow FOV on the XM50 is a product of the very high base magnification 5.5X needed in order to be able to maintain a useful image up at 22X (thermals digitally zoom, essentially "stretching" the base image.) I feel the XQ50 power and FOV range is more useful than that of the XM50. If FOV is of little concern in your situation you might prefer higher magnification scaling.

    I have sold piles of the XP50 Thermion units and have never encountered a customer with a screen failure that I am aware of.

    Fox Optic thanks for the reply. I sent it back to pulsar last week. I’ll give you an update when I get it back.

    @@craneguru66 I think you will be pleased when it comes back. I have been really impressed with the Thermion line in general, however personally, I think the XP50 is the best 640x480 unit currently on the market. It clicks a lot of boxes for about any user and does so at a very attractive price. Extreme versatility, great reliability, superb image quality and controls, extreme accuracy, well thought out rechargeable power system, packed with useful and innovative features while still being relatively easy to operate and very intuitive, awesome 3-year warranty and great customer service to name a few "boxes." If you ever have any questions or need any help, you can call me anytime. Travis Fox Fox Optic 660-341-9370

    Fox Optic that is greatly appreciated ! Before it went down on me, I was amazed with all the features it has. I learned a lot about it from your videos. I came across your channel when searching for pulsar videos and wish I knew about you before my purchase, not that I had any issues from the place I did purchase it, but I always like to support the people that help others like you do. Thanks again!

    Fox Optic hey Travis I just wanted to share my update with you. Pulsar emailed me and said my unit was “non repairable” and they would be shipping out a new unit to me. They didn’t specify what was wrong with it.

    I envy your ability to make this optic work. I bought a Pulsar Trail 2, LRF, XP50A but I regret buying it because it's far too complex. The entire device is a complex button-pushing process requiring the user to thoroughly memorize a broad range of sequences. NOT USER-FRIENDLY. Not the best choice for a combat optic. The wrong tough of any button at the wrong time will cause you to lose your target, lose your reticle, and/or lose your entire hunting opportunity. Just to zero it requires a major learning process which is very frustrating and causes major eye fatigue. Yes, the scope image and capability is very high. But so are many other brands but without the extremely complex button-learning process and risks of touching the wrong button.

    I guess we will agree to disagree. Each button has basically 2 response functions (long press/short press) you basically have 5 buttons performing 10 functions and the the functions are intuitively grouped so that the second (long press)function has to do with the primary (short press) If you really think about it, it's about half as complex as the standard control functions in a basic car in terms of memory function. Nobody thinks of that as complex. New and intimidating, now that's a different story. I constantly hear from customers how the Zeroing process in this Optic is the easiest and best of any scope they have ever used. If anyone in the USA needs help with theirs they can always call me. 877 806 2977
