New POLYTOPIA Aquarion Update in Beta!!! 🦀

A new Polytopia beta that reworks the Aquarion tribe was released on June 11 and we have all the details.
So many changes, some small and some major. We will review the updated tech tree, the new units including the mermaid, the shark, and yelly belly, as well as the new tile improvements - atolls, aquacrops, and flooded tiles. There is even a new option to get a city from a ruin.
We also show how you can join the beta and try out the Aquarion rework for yourself.

1. Right Click on Polytopia in the Steam sidebar, or click the gear icon on the Library page
2. Click “Properties”
3. Head to the “Betas” tab

2.9.2.12491 Changelog
Adjustments to the Aquarion tribe:
- Terrain is Flooded and allows movement for both water and land units, but it is not possible to build roads there
- All units are now amphibious
- Rammer replaced by Shark
- Bomber replaced by Yelly Belly that damage all nearby units
- Roads are replaced by Atolls that connect to all cities within 3 tiles
- Ability to flood tiles to create trade networks and waterways
- Access to Aqua Crop resource and Aqua Farm improvement
- Water Ruins sometimes give you a Lost City, which begins at level 3 and has a Wall
- Tridention no longer has the “Fortify” ability
- Crab now has “Creep” ability
- Aquarion start with water movement, an amphibious mermaid warrior and the ability to build any land improvement on water, but no specific tech
- Crabs have gotten graphical improvements related to teamcolor

The flood feature makes sense now, i really wondered why in the lore it mentions they are like sea people yet too weak and sluggish in their own tile. And i really dont get the sense of aquarion using ships so its good to get rid of them. The suggestion i want right now is to add somehing in the Marine life tech aside from the Shark. During a game sometimes its not feasible to buy a mid tier tech with only one benefit unlocked (aside for it gives you way to the final tier tech) and i feel the same way to other mid tier tech with a single benefit on it (Farming, Mining) although i have not think of any good suggestion as of now. I love the update.

No sharks will be very useful. It's just like Polaris. Very diversified attack options. Like all the other tribes. Aquarian was very pigeon holed onto water heavy maps. Now they should have some dryland viability. My problem moreso would he terrible movement over land still
As an aqua main im sooo excited for the changes flooding seems a bit slow but with all the other buff they seem really good now

Yeah. Habits use a unit to flood a tile can be a slow process. It’s not like placing a road
The Aquarion rework seems awesome. Balancing will probably be kept to a minimum (seeing how the land fill, flooding and lost city mechanics were implemented), and all in all it's great. I don't think that the catapult makes sense with the whole Aquarion vibe. If it was a turtle ship then maybe. But it wouldn't make sense being there on the tech tree then, with sawmills.

@@polychampions Yep. A reason why aqua was trash tribe was its poor economy, but Tridentions without any support just were able to make a game. Now we have a lot of units additional to extra strong Tridentions, good economy and even lvl 3 cities with walls from ruins (wtf). I see this tribe as OP now

The aquarion rework is exactly what i expect of a deep sea creature tribes: mysterious, strong and water engineering. It looks awesome. When does this beta update coming on telephone version? Can't wait to have fun!

Well, I have played few games in this beta and I think units are great, but there is still something to be done on the tribe concerning two main issues: *lack of resources and movement* Here's some ideas that can improve the resource rate and economy growth: -*Once a ruin is conquered* some fishes/acqua farm spawn around it, cause up to now "ruin cities" tend to remain lvl 3 cities due to the lack of resources ocean tiles have; -*Water temples* could cost less stars for acquarion: as I said before, this could help to grow population among the many cities that dont have any (such as polaris outposts, it's 5 star for 1 population). -*Fertilize works on ocean tiles* for aqua farms (and maybe cost more, or takes two turns to fertilize the tile). -Create a proper windmill (a *seamill* ) for acqua crops could be great. Either, to improve the movement: -Roads could be reintroduced as *canals* for lands, since on land acquarions are totally weak. It could even cost 5 stars per tile (such as bridges), but right now the tribe is unplayable even just on big islands (I'm not mentioning continent or archipelago maps) -*Atols give movement bonus* on water tiles, if the intent is to improve even further the power on water tiles if "canals" are not going to be added. The entire rework of crops and mills could fit the idea of acquarion as a late game tribe, as they always have been, with poor economy at the beginning but with the capability to grow a lot in terms of population and unit spam in the late game. I really hope they make some change, the work is great, but as it stands, I don't think we are gonna see the tribe played very often.

I was thinking that canals (that cost 5 stars) would work better for Aquarion instead of roads, but I guess flooding works as well

My thoughts as well, and they give only 2 stars for being a lvl 3 city, so if it does increase tech cost it seems like it would hurt economy if anything.

Nope. I tested that. If an Aquarion mind bender converts are regular unit, like a swordsman or knight, it doesn't get a mermaid tail or float ability

Since the path of the ocean update i thought aquarion's navy tech tree was useless because tridentions can solo and negate my opponents navy, but now i think its more useful units have float combined by movement on deep water tiles i can seige coastal cities no problem (Rn i use cloaks to help seige coastal cities and crabs while shredding enemy catapults with mass forks)

I think all of this is balanced, except the fact they can place anything on water tiles. Should still be restricted to land tiles imo. Haven't played them yet tho.

Overall i think this will make aquarion weaker. Their strongest strategy will still clearly be the exact same: tridentions. However now they dont start with riding tech, so will take at least another turn to even get there. Having all base units go on water will not be able to compete with the strength of boats at all whatsoever. If im being optimistic, my hope is that sharks serve as a powerful speedy swordsman that comes earlier on the tech tree. However being on a different tech tree from tridention means they are competing with Aquarions best strat, not boosting it. I understand these big flashy changes are exciting, but im not convinced they will hold up at a high level of competitive play. All that negativity out of the way though, this looks really cool! Polytopia is the best mobile game hands down 🎉

It is hard to say when beta will come to mobile or the full game. In the past, the devs put updates on mobile a few days before full release. For now, Aquarion rework is only in Steam.

super cool that the rework is done; aq eco really sucks now; some changes are also needed to resource spawn rates; i love that all units are made amphibious; mixed feelings about flooding for sharks cause it is really weird that sharks can cross flooded areas; so it feels not logical that such heavy unit can cross these areas; cause if other factions land units can cross flooded areas then its more like a puddle, so a place where sharks couldn't swim cause its not deep enough; so this issue is more about congruency and aestetics, im not talking about the mechanics balance here; maybe it would make more eastetic sense and as well as being cooler to make sharks have "hide" skill just like the Cloaks, but then not be able to move on flooded areas; then they are the true kings of the ocean; i dont think it would make sharks OP but maybe increasing cost to 10 stars would make sense; and also give them "blind" skill which means they cannot see more than 1 square in the unknown direction they move (so a regular unit uncovers all squars in fog of war, while shark would uncover just 1) - so this would be kinda like the reverse of "scout" skill that Cloaks have and this way sharks cannot really be used to uncover unknown areas

Yup. So many interesting stuff going on. I think the atolls help the eco some, they are less expensive than ports. Also being able to build on water tiles gives more real estate for improvements. Still not a super strong eco tribe though

@@polychampions surprised they are not planning any resources changes as they are the worst of all tribes (along with vengir); cymanti is soo stacked with 2x spores guaranteed in capital - thats so unfair in multiplayer; I feel water farms should work with windmills; and not starting with any tech is a bad choice; it would make sense if they just start with the new fishing so they can explore better since they dont even have the starting amphibian any more if you consider that rework has worse early exploration without amphibian opening + same bad resources as before + no starting tech, then all these changes may go for nothing as aq will simply not survive long enough to use any of the new stuff; heh in this light it actually seems this rework is a nerf of aq :D
So sad the shield mermaids aren't called shieldmaid 😭

as someone who's favourite tribe was aquarion, even long before they got any updates and frankly sucked massively to play I can't believe we live in the world where they're finally being given the love that cymanti and polaris got as a special tribe also why did they feel the need to nerf aquarion riders and tridentions even more??

Strategy 1 from this aquarion beta Go full on organizational then upgrade cities with farms and windmills and harass opponents with cloaks and some side naval units (old crazy bot move ik) Strategy 2: go on a water world or archipelago game and spam sharks and the squid like a crazy bot that spams cloaks and hope you overrun them with numbers (like in history if you know you know) Strategy 3 spam Swordmaids😂(I can't stop laughing at this).
