He has such courage to be able to express his sorrow through his music. Maybe that’s his way of dealing with it and helping others do the same

Something happens to me when I listen to James Blunt and I can't explain it. I'm tough, I'm sporty, I listen to hip hop. I almost never cry. I only cried when my father died. I can't listen to Monsters without crying, I thought it was because of my lost father. But why the hell am I crying at this song too? This man is terrible, he takes your heart and breaks it into pieces.

It doesn’t make you weak to cry. Sometimes you just have to let it out. Sometimes it’s healing. James just has a way of bringing that out of a person, whether you want it or expect it or not.

James Blunt is one of most underrated singer/songwriters of this generation. He uses music to heal trauma Another amazing one you could do Is: Carry You Home. If you don’t know his full background James was a decorated military Captain that led troops in various conflicts. He writes songs that resonate and connect so deeply with people.

Having a baby is both beautiful and terrifying at the same time. My wife and I had 3 babies lost to miscarriages and with the help of an amazing doctor finally had a healthy pregnancy, then all of a sudden chaos ensued at 25 weeks and our little fragile boy was born at 27 weeks 6 days and weighing only 2 pounds 5 ounces. He’s 7 now and the smartest kid I know. He’s very healthy considering all he has been through and although he does have some ongoing medical issues that likely won’t go away, they are all manageable and now just part of the daily grind. This is a beautiful song and such an important subject. So many good through miscarriages in silence and never tell a soul. That’s too much of a burden to carry. We need to talk about the hard stuff so we can all help each other get through it.

The power of his story telling. Did anyone notice how he started out singing to his wife and then the song shifts and he’s singing to his daughter directly. He begins by trying to comfort his wife but when he sings to their daughter he is deeply addressing his own grief. It’s so exactly true to how I’ve witnessed good men face grief!

I thought it was a breakup song. But then one of times through I REALLY listened to the lyrics… And got hit with the We never should’ve never picked a name because now she has a face line… And it clicked I never thought he could ever break me as much as he did with Monsters. But.. THIS. James is such an amazing songwriter.

I have a new found respect for James Blunt after this song. It broke my heart the first time I heard it. I have a daughter with dirty blonde hair and this song instantly made me feel so lucky and humble to have her when so many parents miss carry or have still born. It's heart rending but beautiful at the same time. How a new parent, and a mother at that, didn't feel that pain immediately is beyond my comprehension.

The fact that he can sing about some of the things he sings about (this, and Monsters) is remarkable. They are such emotional and sad songs and he has the ability to power through those emotions and give us something beautiful. I can’t imagine losing a child, even in the womb. My heart breaks for everyone who’s felt that kind of pain, or the pain of wanting to be pregnant but never being able to. I didn’t realize at first what the song was about (mom brain fog was very real during this time), I thought it was about divorce and the family splitting up. As soon as I realized what it was about, I cried my eyes out pretty instantly. And I’ve cried the few times I’ve heard it since.

Please don't think it was a criticism. I was taken back by your reaction but it was by no means meant as a derogatory comment. I'm a man in his 50s and I did cry almost immediately as I knew what it was about instantly. I don't know if that's odd or not. I came across the song by accident on prime music. Lol, I was driving at the time. But I cannot listen to it without a tear in my eye. Again, the comment was not me having any kind of go at you, though I see it can be read that way. I'm sorry for that and any misunderstanding. I was just stunned and not understanding your reaction. Thank you for taking the time to explain though you had no reason to. I wish you all well.

The girl that never was, Where to start...? The theme is extremely delicate, rare in music, and interwoven with perhaps the greatest human sorrow, the loss of a child. This time, not only did James push the boundaries of writing with the text and bring an incredibly serious text full of life and thought, but the video is incredibly vivid, perfectly tuned to the music and lyrics. His voice lends itself beautifully to this elegy, as does his British accent. Now a little about the text. The text is actually about a girl who was not born. Whether it was a miscarriage or a stillborn child, I didn't understand or the songwriter left it up to the listener to decide. The text has two climaxes, both beautifully emphasized tonally. The first: "First casualty of life is a plan!" is a philosophical review of the song's theme and the very meaning of life, and the second, in my opinion, is both wonderful and creepy, sensitive and tragic: We should never picked her name, cause now she has a face, and no matter what we do no one can take her place'' is that moment that causes immediate braking of the organism, the culmination of sadness on a completely different level. Parents who had to replace all their wishes and best intentions with sadness and tragedy that they will struggle with on a daily basis. And finally, I would like to emphasize the relationship between the stanza and the chorus of the song, both textually and tonally, and visually (video). The text of the stanza, which in a subtle, lyrical manner gradually intensifies the listener's empathy and sadness, is the complete antithesis of the chorus. The chorus describes what their little girl would be like a wonderfully idealized, real princess placed on the pedestal of parenthood. The music along with the rhythm gradually accelerates from the stanza to the chorus and culminates here, which is James' way of showing that hope and love always overcome sadness and pain. Visually throughout the stanzas, James and the actress playing the role of the wife pack away unused items and wardrobe for the baby, and the chorus is visually warmer with a shot of a smiling blonde girl running freely through fields of wheat bathed in the sun. Also, great contrast that is meant to enhance the message of the text. All in all, The Girl That Never Was is one of the best musical achievements of this century, a song that breaks even the hardest hearts into pieces and puts them back together with the hope that everything will be overpassed with hope and love!! It's my humble opinion...

This really hit home for me. I've had three miscarriages I am grateful that I was able to have three children in the long run because so many don't have that opportunity, and my heart breaks for them.

Idk what’s worse, I can’t IMAGINE getting that close then losing one.. as someone who has to have similar conversations with my wife because we can’t have one… it hurts. And then I have to tell people who do have kids “no it’s okay, talk about your babies because it’s not your fault you have one to enjoy” but I have to sit there and desperately want one while other people have one and get to have that love. I’d give another one a chance, it’s country and I know a lot of people don’t care for what they think is country, but Craig Morgan “the father, my son, and the Holy Ghost” is another one about a dad writing songs about a child they lost.

This is such a good song. I believe I heard an interview where it's about a friend of theirs experience. Andy Brown has an amazing, def heartbreaking song called 'Hollow'. it's much more personal to him and his wife though, so you may not enjoy it (as much as you can such songs) as much.

The lyrics here are really sadder than Monsters, though the tune is more lilting. As hard as it was for the family to prepare for Charles Blount's imminent death (staved off by the very late transplant), at least they knew he had a full life and left behind a heritage in his children and the military men he had guided and led. A child lost, whether in utero or after birth, never has the chance for that, and the parents cannot help but feel they did something wrong.

This hit home as me and my wife went through 3 ivfs. We were lucky onnthe 3rd attempt which gave us our beautiful daughter. But this song makes me think of the failed 2 attempts where we had very early miscarriages. And what would they of been like. Left me in tears watching this.

Song hits hard, I have a son, love him, would give my life for him, he's 26 now, but always would have loved a daughter, but wasn't to be. Another great cover artist is Dan Vasc, metal singer actually, but sings almost everything, he has a cover of Elvis's An American Trilogy, sung 5 days after his fathers death, as a homage to his father.

Gary Barlow wrote a song about a similar circumstance ( Let me go) but deliberately wanted to make it an upbeat song. It is written wrong the perspective of the child. Similar to this in that until you digest the lyrics they don't hit you.

Damn, I cried. My take away from the song is that when you stand from afar looking at other people's lives, seeing this beautiful, perfect fairy tale, it never is. Nobody in the world is spared hardships and loss. Life isn't easy and yet we all, me including judge so easily not only others but ourselves too. When I was younger I wished many times I lived other people's lives. Expecting my first and only child, I was completely oblivious to the fact that I have lupus,. I came very close to losing him, barely survived myself. I'm glad I was spared the knowledge, until the day he was born ( emergency cesarean) of knowing how close I came to losing the most important person in my life.

The discussion of stillbirths and miscarriages is still a fairly taboo subject even today even though it affects a large number of couples. We have 5 grown up children, but in the corner of our hearts is the sadness of the one who never was.💔
