I live in Louisiana and our State Flower is the Magnolia....you did a beautiful job painting this one! They are very large flowers and the trees are slow growers, but once the get large, they make a wonderful shade and beautiful display of flowers! Thanks for sharing, Kristie!

What is so absolutely cool is that these books go beyond just the fabulous opportunity to practice/learn watercolor. You can learn to actually draw the flowers, understand more about shading and light, create a lovely gift or pieces for cards, mixed media experiments, etc. Kristy is so very generous as are you for sharing your talent, time, inspiration and ideas.

I live in Southwest Ohio. I have two neighbors who each have a large pink magnolia. I have a star magnolia which is white. But in my area we are lucky if the trees bloom for the duration of the blossom because our weather is iffy at that time of year. If we get frost it kills the blooms right away. This year we were lucky and the trees bloomed magnificently. Love your page you painted. Looks beautiful! TFS.

Love the colors you used here, Kristina! We used to have a magnolia in our front yard here in Texas, but my brother got tired of raking the leaves it dropped when we were teenagers, so he & our dad cut it down. There is one a few blocks over that grows how magnolias are supposed too--all the way down to the ground! Ours had the lower part of the trunk visible, but this other one is like a humongous bush. Very tall and wide. I like how, in the one you painted, you got the effect of the seeds in the middle of the flower. That's something I've struggled with in trying to paint/color magnolia flowers. Thank you for sharing this! :)

Your magnolia turned out beautiful Kristina. I have a couple of Kristy Rice's books and love them, although I do have difficulty trying to figure out what is a leaf, a petal or white space sometimes. I honestly do prefer the images like the one you picked out for this video, ie with some white space. One thing for sure though, they are great quality coloring books! Magnolia's are huge here in the south but I have never seen a pink one. I have always seen white. So now I will have to be on the hunt for pink. Love the coloring.

Tammy J I think that the magnolia seen by Kristina is a Magnolia Grandiflora, which is the tallest type of magnolia with the biggest flowers. I know because I had one in my garden and it was about 15 meters. This kind of magnolia has only white flowers for what I know, and they are very fragrant, with a scent similar to lemon. There are pink magnolias as well, but I'm not sure about their variety name (apart from the Susan magnolias, which I have, but they are very small plants, compared to the Grandiflora). Sorry if my English is not perfect, I'm Italian! XD Best regards!

I grew up with one of the white blossom trees in my grandparents yard, but my first house as an adult I had a tree with the pink almost purple blossoms. I had no idea what it was, so I sent a picture to my horticulturist step mom and she said it was a magnolia. I was shocked, because I too thought they only came in white with those big waxy leaves and weird pinecone looking seed pods.

Beautiful. Sandy Allnock recommends the book "The Modern Flower Painter" by Anna Mason. It's excellent. Her water colours are so true to life that they qualify as botanical illustrations. I wish, some year .....

Kristy Rice is so talented, these are beautiful illustrations. You are extremely talented in so many areas. I am just starting to do watercolor, although I have been painting for many years with oils and acrylics. There are more but those are my favorite.

I love the drawing but the book I got the paper is so thin couldn’t do wet on wet! Never scrub my paper but w just second “not heavy water glaze” paper started coming apart! Just got it so maybe paper has changed but if use must trace all of it onto my WC paper?

Hi Kristina, does the watercolor paper in this book have enough tooth to be able to use colored pencils on it. I use watercolor paper for my pencils and I love the images in this book.

It's generally pretty smooth. I'd compare it to a hot press watercolor paper.

My house had a beautiful pink magnolia tree in the side yard for years, but we recently had to cut it down because it had rotted inside. (Rotted? Rot?)
