For me, the answer would be „both“, kind of. New equipment helps getting photos I could not get (like that) with old equipment. However, newer equipment costs more and depending on where I go I may not pull it out in fear of dropping it, getting it really dirty and beat up.

What I prioritize is that it fits in my pocket because no camera takes good photos in a hotel closet, which is why I continue to take the Panasonic GF7 with the 12-32 plus the 20mm to all my trips.

I prefer old and cheap equipment when traveling because I don't have to worry if my equipment gets stolen or damaged and I can enjoy my travels in peace. The gear still produces excellent results and if my photos don't look as sharp at 400% I'm not going to sweat it.

My love (digital camera) is the A7R3, the first FF camera I bought after the a6000. I find the 42mp to be perfect in size and resolution. Slightly more than 33mp but not that jump to 61mp. I love the feel the A7R3 body, the bright EVF and the ease of use. It's right there with the A74 in the perfect megapixel count. Back in my Pentax Spotmatic to Nikon FE2 days, I shot that really nice black & white high pixel film - Tri-X. Ok, I'm kidding. It is grainy but I got so many great photos from that film. I love it over any other B&W film. Of course, I loved Kodachrome 64, the best color film ever. I was never concerned about absolute sharpness as 35mm film is grainy by the nature of its size. I printed (at Clark AB, Philippines hobby shop) an 11x14 inch pictures of a wonderful old and well detailed man in a hat.

Hi Matti, it was good to have Aleksi as a guest, and very refreshing to hear that he likes his Zoom lens. Not many photographers like using Zoom lenses but they do have a great place in photography. Any camera that can take a clean shot at ISO 25,000 is a good camera, and the Sony A7s that Aleksi has is a great camera. Love the Trams in Helsinki. Thanks Matti. 😊

On my first extended around the world in 2012 I took a Sony NEX7 and 28-200 zoom. It worked reasonably well and the NEX7 was a lovely little camera. These days I still shoot a 24mp camera, full frame for my general purpose and travel photography, usually with a few small primes. My prints have plenty of resolution. I have my Fuji 100s for specific projects but for travel it’s my Nikon and small lenses.

I have a Sony A7, the original form more than 10 years ago. And have no problem shooting it with a Canon 70-200 L lens, or for more everyday use, the 24-105, all with an adapter, that makes them even longer. And I can a walk all day with that thing in my hand, and I am disabled lump of lard! If I need pocket-ability, I'll just stuff my equally old Sony A5100 in my pocket or use my phone even, as then I am just a tourist, out on a walk with the family, snapping anything I see on my way. So what I carry is not that important.

Matti, I really enjoy it when you two are out photographing together. Two comments - first, I agree with you on the GR111x being a terrific camera with its surprising clarity and customization. Secondly, I hear quite often from professional photographers that they are not overly concerned by the number of pixels their camera sensors accommodate. I’ve seen some of your photos that were taken on an old 10 mp camera and they were wonderful. I’m guessing it’s more the photographer and less the camera. Love your videos

Nice video! On my last trip (Australia & New Zealand) I took my Olympus Pen F digital with some small lenses. On my next trip I plan on taking my PENTAX KP (yes, a DSLR in this mirrorless age!) with some of the Pentax DA prime lenses (love those - I have the 15mm, 21mm, 40mm). I also have a Sony A7CII, so not everything I own is old, but I like buying used equipment and using it. You'll notice that all my cameras are smaller. I prefer those. I always enjoy your videos with Aleks, and his photo's abroad are inspiring. I recall Michael from Luminous Landscapes raving about the 12mpx sensor. The A7S/A7Sii were the Sony cameras which I had my eye on for many years, but once L-mount was in action they were out of the picture. I'd love to see a new 12mp FF camera. It's not out of the question that Blackmagic or Lumix would make one since they've made low-count m4/3 cameras before. The other cameras which I've heard are good in this regard are the D700 and the older (pre-SD1) Foveons. Similar to your other video on hardcoded raw crops, there's a certain Zen to having images which are viewed at (or close to) their true pixel-count. I like having a variety of imaging qualities, and large pixels clearly make a qualitative difference.

Last December I ‘accidentally’ added a used Sony A5100 with the 16-50mm kit lens, which has become my EDC. It has no viewfinder but with the small zoom lens, flip screen and even a popup flash, it’s not terribly larger than my GRiiix was, which I just sold (!!😮). I’ve even adapted some of my adapted M mount glass on this little thing and what fun! For travel, my A7CR is getting lonely..

Well, my A7 IV is very versatile as a hybrid camera and even though a new Sony camera will be released in the future, I will keep my A7 IV. And I am happy with 33 MP as the sweet spot, not too less and not too much MP. (while other full frame brands with similar prices are stuck with 24 MP). When Fujifilm launched the X-T5 with 40mp a lot of people were saying they had started to crop more, in effect using it as an alternative to a zoom or telephoto. I don't know if any manufacturers are deliberately using this as a selling point but if so they might panic if they realise people aren't buying so many expensive lenses!

Your comment about people buying smaller focal lengths because of the 40mp Fujifilm XT5 and XH2 and now the new xt50 is wrong, regardless of the sensor size it is important to use the proper focal length for the subject that you are photographing, I have a XT5, XH2 & XT3,I always use the focal length that best suits the subject but the longest lens I have is the Fujifilm 100-400mm and at times it is still short for wildlife so being able to crop and still get a good photo helps alot.
