NEW Optima H6 Yellow Top with More Power and Direct Fit Jeep Installation! Plus Charger Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is the NEW NEW Optima H6 Yellow Top Battery with PureFlow Technology and it is a direct drop in fit for many OEM applications like the AutoEdits 2013 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon JKU you will see in this video!
The H6 is a huge improvement over stock batteries and even improves on the workhorse "six pack" Yellow Top.
Here's a link to the Optima page with all the details on this battery:
www.optimabatteries.com/en-us...
AND HERE'S A DIRECT LINK TO SUMMITRACING TO BUY THIS THING:
www.summitracing.com/parts/ul...
I'll also give a quick overview of the two chargers that Optima offers, the Digital 1200 and the Digital 400. It surprises me how many people don't realize that an AGM (absorbed glass mat) battery can benefit from a charger specifically designed for it.
And this is the link to the 65 Corvette test drive video:

  • @AutoEdits

    Good observation on that! it's a good general rule but on the Corvette, the negative terminal is tucked deep into the fender and doing it last in this case would make a short across to the positive terminal more likely for me. Especially since the positive just needs a set of pliers to attach it. Thanks so much for watching!

    Late reply but on optimas website it states 10.5v is the magic number. Most alternators and even regular battery chargers can bring the optima back to normal volts. Once below 10.5, you’ll need an optima charger. www.optimabatteries.com/en-us/support/charging/charging-agm-battery Last two paragraphs

    That original optima (even though it says Johson controls this was in the early years) was a real optima as in pure lead, optima (before the buyout) recipes and etc. Once Johnson controls took over everything changed and I can promise you that any new optima simply will not last as long. They are not the same batteries. I work in auto parts and I have personally seen 10+ year old optimas on several occasions but anything under 8 years old seems to be closer to 2-3ish years before they come back dead.

    I have heard similar things, however all anecdotal. 12 year old yellow top in my TJ is still going strong. Would love to see some proper testing of new vs old “formulas” or designs. From my point of view agm is agm in function and build quality would make the most impact. Haven’t seem any huge leap in battery tech outside the lithium space.

    I 100% agree with you. I had a Yellow top in 2001, I let it get too low for too long in a spare vehicle in 2013. Had to buy a new one. I have been through 6 warranties since then. I will be buying something different once the warranty is up or at least when they stop swopping them out for me.

    I keep hearing that, but my experience has been fine. Red Top in my Ranger has been going strong since 2012 no problems at all. The Yellowtop I had in my old D50 was over 10 years old. I think a lot of "dead" Optima are operator headspace and timing, less poor manufacturing. My sample size of 2 isn't exactly impirical evidence, however. Swapping my Red Top to a Yellow Top soon...but nothing to do with its functionality.

    Remember a few weeks ago, someone telling me to get a Northstar? A few days later, the kids tell me the 2016 Ford Fusion is flashing a message before starting, "CHANGE BATTERY SOON". Went to my local "Northstar" dealer in Culver City. It's raining. It's early morning, before the kids head off to college classes. Battery store tells me they don't have a Northstar that will fit. They have the exact H6 Optima that does fit. They test the battery and tell me it has 80% life left. Not wanting any Daddy come fix phone calls; especially in the rain, I say, give me the battery. They let me pull it into their garage. Not wanting to pay the $20 install fee, they let me do it myself. Took me less than 10 minutes. That H6 Battery weighs 54 pounds. Significantly heavier and bigger than what was put in by the factory. If I had to guess, the old one probably weighed 15 pounds. But yeah. I erased the message and it hasn't returned. Feels good knowing the kids won't be bugging me for a new battery, for a while.

    It's about time Optima caught up with tech that at least a half dozen other AGM manufacturers like Northstar, XS, Full Throttle, Odyssey, Kinetik, Reikken etc have already been using for the past decade. Too late now, their stock dropped long time ago.

    They haven't lost stock in my book... I completely understand your point but in my experience it's been all good. Plus this new battery is something special, one of the engineers told me that they consistently tested higher than claimed 928 cranking amps and that's pretty amazing for a deep cycle with 72 Amp Hours to offer... in comparison to a specific high cranking battery with 955 CA and only 35 AH. I like it and will report honestly how it does over the next few years!

    Great video Jason. I just replaced the battery in my 14 JKRU with this newest Optima and I've gotta say, it's STRONG! Other than quick, powerful start-ups, it seems that I have a bit more ooomph in the skinny pedal. Not sure if that's true or not but I am loving this new battery~ It's definitely an investment but the 3 year warranty and the reputation of the Optima brand made much easier to pull the trigger.

    I have used these for years, they are the best, most importantly they do not boil over. Here in Florida that is a big deal as the heat cooks em real bad, and causes damage to frame. Bad News. These are the best. Make sure to use the right charger do not use an old fashion charger, the new ones communicate with the AGM chip.

    6:26 Starting with the negative post is best but anyone can actually WELD a wrench to both of their top posts if they're not careful. 😲😧 Or worse, touch a metal brake/ABS line and actually burn a hole in it ...and potentially set the pressurized brake fluid on fire! 😱😩Using an insulated socket wrench is a GREAT idea. (or a wrench that is shorter than the distance between the posts 😉) Harbor Freight has a decent one btw. Helps to use some temporary zip ties to hold back stiff battery cables away from the battery drop-in-zone. Be careful with all metal hold-down hardware as well. Don't set anything on or near the battery posts that could roll or fall onto both of them. If you're wearing shorts and have some sweaty knees/legs resting on a chrome bumper you can get a nice "tingle" if you grab the positive side first. (and yeah, I've managed to do all of the above while doing electrical work on roughly 9 to 10,000 cars over the years. Oops🤭🙄)

    Still don’t fully understand the CA and CCA. Is there a finite number of Amps you can use before the battery drains? How many amps does a Jeep need to start up? Correct me if I’m off here... let’s say a Jeep needs 100 amps to start... (I actually have no idea the actual number) that leaves 828 amps that could be used for lights, fridges, radios, etc before the Jeep would not be able to start... am I thinking of that correctly? And the Cold Cranking Amps is how many you have in extreme cold conditions?

  • @AutoEdits

    @AutoEdits

    5 жыл бұрын

    Cold Cranking Amps is just a standard of measuring battery output during extreme conditions i.e. cold. The Cranking Amps is standard temp output. There is a number of amps that are used to start an engine but you are forgetting that the alternator usually recharges that loss with 15 - 25 min of run time on an average vehicle. Deep cycle batteries become important to users that have accessories that demand more than the alternator can supply.

  • @1111Overland

    @1111Overland

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, I knew the alternator recharged the battery and ran the show while the car was on... didn’t realize the battery was a “backup” for the alternator though. Makes me wonder why a beefier, higher capacity alternator isn’t a typical upgrade. (Possibly because people don’t want to always run their vehicle to run accessories?) So a deeper battery gives you more “backup” as needed.

  • @AutoEdits

    @AutoEdits

    5 жыл бұрын

    High amp alternators are a very common upgrade and some of my Jeeping buddies run dual "deep cycle" batteries just to have that extra reserve. I have run my vehicle interior lights and ARB refrigerator for multiple days without starting the Jeep and the Yellow Top had plenty of power to start the Jeep when I was ready to go so I don't seem to need more for now.
