Polytopia got a major naval rework called Path of the Ocean, game version 101. This update has been in beta for a few weeks and this is the final version. We’ll go over how this update changes the game, including the new tech tree, new naval units, changes to special tribes, like Polaris and Aquarion, tasks that are different, and balance changes.

    I’ve had so much fun messing around with this update while it was in beta! I’m so glad other tribes have the ability to use splash damage, and I absolutely love the Juggernauts! One thing I think the devs could look at is parks giving +2 stars potentially. Not choosing to get a Giant for 1 extra star narrows the gap of value a little bit but I don’t think it’s enough. Or it could also potentially just give stars like the resources upgrade on top of the +1 to the capital. Very well done video!

    Thanks I had a similiar idea of parks possibly competing with giants for 2 stars per turn income. Ultimately, giants are just better in most situations

    I’ll add my 2 cents. I think the 1 star is actually balanced. Come late game on larger maps it’s usually more of a hassle to spawn Giants and have to lug them all the way to where the action is currently happening. I think this is a great addition!

    @@darrenrobinson06 oh yea it’s a great addition no doubt, I might have to see what it’s like playing bigger maps, maybe it is fine the way it is, but as of now I think it could give a bit more value as an option compared to what giants can give

    00:25 ⚓ Naval tech tree changes include sailing becoming a tier one tech, needing ports to access water, and aquaculture replacing whaling. 01:20 🎣 Fishing, a tier 2 tech, grants deep water movement and introduces the scout unit for harvesting starfish, which replace whales in this update. 02:13 🚢 Upgraded rafts (rammers, scouts, bombers) require specific tech and are limited to upgrades within a player's territory. 03:09 💣 Bombers replace battleships, featuring area of effect attacks but without the ability to move and attack in the same turn. 04:04 🌉 Significant balance changes involve bridge building, with bridges costing seven stars and acting as roads over water tiles. 05:03 💰 Markets (formerly custom houses) generate income based on adjacency to ports, windmills, sawmills, or forges, offering up to 12 stars per turn when strategically placed. 06:00 🗺 New map types like Pangia and updated continent maps affect starting positions, village spawns, and coastal access for tribes. 06:56 🐟 Special tribes like Aquarian and Polaris received adjustments, altering starting abilities, movement, and defense stats for units like crabs and tridents. 07:50 🌨 Changes to existing techs like fishing, Pesca ISM, and units' movements offer new dynamics in response to the naval updates. 08:19 🔍 Task adjustments include the Explorer task transforming into uncovering four lighthouses, granting benefits like added population and insights into other players' progress. 09:14 🛠 Joining Discord or becoming a channel member offers additional support and perks for engaging with Poly Champions content.

    Naval combat in Polytopia definitely needed a rework. It was pretty boring before, being just a game of who can spam more battleships, and giant battleships were OP imo. It's nice to see the game having multiple different naval units that aren't direct upgrades from each other, like Hexonia. I haven't had the chance to check it out yet, but it looks like naval combat will be more fun now. I'm a bit sceptical about the balance changes though. As a Bardur main myself, I can say that the tribe was definitely OP, but I'm not sure if increasing lumber hut cost is the way to go. This will affect every tribe, not just Bardur, and will also have a significant effect on Hoodrick (the other tribe with lots of forests in their territory), who do not need to be nerfed. A better solution would be to simply reduce the forest spawn rate in Bardur land. That being said, I'm yet to find out how much of a difference the lumber hut changes make - I'm hoping Bardur is now equal in strength with other tribes rather than being completely nerfed to the ground. As for the increase in road price, that is just dumb imo. Connecting a city to your capital with a road now costs 6 stars AT BEST, and you only get 2 population from doing so (one for your capital and one for the city you are connecting). This is hardly even worth it. Less population per stars spent than building other improvements eg. mines, or gathering resources. If cities need more than 2 tiles of road to connect, even post-nerf lumber huts are a cheaper way to get population than roads. Also, RIP Yaddak... another tribe that did not need to be nerfed, but has probably been nerfed to the ground by this update. Rider roads were one of the most effective strategies for fighting against Cymanti, with their boosted Hexapods. How do we deal with them now that we can't rely on roads being only 1 star?

    i only play Yadaak so i'm biased against the roads nerf but it really was an overpowered tech. Rider+roads was essential for every match. 3 stars is a fairer price for the benefits roads offer. Other changes to fix the new balance problems will come soon enough (namely Cymanti). one step to improve Hoodrick is to improve Archers. One idea i have is to give them 3 range if they don't move. If you move and then shoot, it's 2 range like before; if you stand still, 3 range. Call the ability "Accuracy".

    I think I noticed a change to Cyamnti that isn’t mentioned anywhere. Unless I’m just mis-remembering, the Centipede used to be able to move, then still be able to explode a segment; however now when you move it prevents the segment from exploding (similarly to how it won’t explode if you attack with the centipede head first). I don’t see any mention of this change, or was it always like this and I just never noticed untill now somehow >->

    It was always like this. Before this update, you could not move a centipede and then explode a segment. You had to explode first

    Wow... This game feels too much different now. I was so used to Custom Houses. Now I've to find perfect location for market. PS- your voice is so soothing,Polytopia should hire you for new Update announcements.😅

    Nope. Same difficulties as before If you are looking for more of a challenge than bots, try playing multiplayer. I always say, playing against bots is predictable. Human opponents are more interesting

    Is this part of the update? I just played it now and my capital is right next to an enemy capital? PS It's a 900 tile map with only 6 bots. 😁

    Yes, I've seen reports of capital spawning really close, like borders touching. Hopefully the devs will adjust the map gen for capital spawns

    Idk if it's a bug or easter egg, but if you complete the gate of power with vengir, all your units get a re-skinned head like the thdkrkr skin

    Yeah, markets are less straightforward than the customs houses, but on the other hand they give more opportunities for income even on drylands map.

    Yes. Defenders are very useful now for putting in naval units. Swords only got a little nerf losing the fortify ability

    There used to be a cheese strat in Domination where you could play against Quetz and just walk into the open capital. Bots don't do that anymore

    Pretty much the same as the old meta. Poly push to explore. Save for forestry before capturing your first city. Find some lucrative sanctuary spots. Get riders and roads. Get more villages and ruins. Get an egg in a safe back line city. Win

    It's nice update, something new appeared after so much time. But form game become much easier. Cause I don't have to spend so much stars for ports to gain stars, market made it easier. Also bombers are too overpowered. After update I even finished crazy level bots much faster.

    @@polychampions Yeah for the price of 15 stars they are imbalanced. 2 bombers literally can destroy whole army. I think they should make them little more expensive.

    Hojala la actualizacion se hubiera quedado en el mar que esta bien aunque extrañare a los antiguos barcos 😢 pero subir el precio a las carreteras y a las cabañas debilitan a 2 razas muy debiles hoodrik que ya de por si son de las peorsitas la deja siendo bastante mas mala al principio pero los yadak murieron con el aumento de precio ese de las carreteras dejandoles su unica ventaja a su mas grande debilidad dejandolo como la peor tribu. Pero agradesco que pusieron mas op a mis kikoos❤

    Sí, esta actualización perjudica a Bardur y Yadakk, pero el objetivo era equilibrar las tribus. Bardur era demasiado fuerte antes. Es bueno para otras tribus como Imperius y Kickoo.
