New M5 Competition LCI! BUT is an Old M5 better?!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Welcome back to RBR guys! It’s always fun when we have an updated automotive icon to explore isn’t it? The battle for the best Performance Saloon has always been a viciously fought one over the ages, and the most infamous champion in the space has been #BMW’s M5. Ever since the original E12 m535i or the 1985 E28 #M5 with the M88 engine from the M1, the M5 has been the benchmark for the performance saloon.
Now we have the LCI M5, LCI means life cycle if you didn’t know, to dumbest name for facelift ever, but on the face of it looks to address some of the main issues I found with the last competition, while bringing it in line with current cars in terms of tech specifically in the interior.
Things haven’t been easy for the M5 as they used to be a few decades ago. Recent history has seen the rivals from AMG and Porsche make things all the more difficult. New Pan Turbo S is a monster, E63S just updated with marmite looks but much improved suspension allegedly. Plus, I found the #BMWM M8 to be much more comfortable while having better steering, and things like the GT63S exist to make matters more complicated.
Now regardless, I really loved the original M5, with 600 BHP i thought it was powerful enough while maintaining the balance versus comfort that’s so crucial in a performance saloon. Always thought the E63 rode hard, until i drove the M5 Competition and understood the meaning of crashy!
Luckily, M have tackled those very issues. So while the power of the M5 remains 600BHP, and the Competition at 625, the main changes come to the suspension. We have new shock absorbers carried over from the M8, which remember we found to be much better. The chassis has also been retuned.
Now a quick look inside, and let’s hear the stock exhaust system!
So let’s explore the update to the most infamous M Car, with the new M5 competition!
- Rivals of the M5
- F90 M5 pre-facelift old
- F90 Competition pre-facelift
- M5 LCI Chances
- New suspension
- Engine cooling updates
- M Compound Brakes

- M5 LCI Performance parts

Like I said in the review, if it was my money a pre-facelift standard M5, or more realistically the E63S from 2017. But that’s just Mr.AMG’s private bias talking! Carry on.

Standard 2018 is what I have and don’t regret it for a second. The power difference is insignificant (if there really actually is) as both cars run the quarter mile in 10.9 seconds. I’ll take a softer suspension every day of the week since I track the car once a year and drive it to work 200 times per year.

Pre-facelift E63S is literally a big C63S in design, quite disappointing when the midsize Merc used to have its own design language, while the C and S were pretty much small and large versions of each other. The M5 is also simply the more polished, more accomplished car. It’s ever so slightly better in a lot of areas.

To me the recent years M power cars really shine because of the competition models. Markus Flasch once said in late 2019 or 2020 that around 90% of M power cars are competition ones. The entry level ones are more like a marketing strategy just like AMG 63/63s. Not many people really want a normal AMG or M. When they spent similar money they almost always choose the best version. They would even think the power is not enough and have a tune. The concept is about 'too much is just right.' These car owners usually have many cars as well. I think if people really care about the daily use that much they will just choose a M50i or AMG 53.

The M X-Drive is def. impressive. It can put down all the power and never feel like it's interfering. 2WD is only to giggle that you can put it in 2'nd and give it the boot and light up the tires. I never put it in 2WD any more ... all it would do is to require more frequent tire replacement. What's REALLY surprising is how many miles I get out of a set of 4S ... 20k and still thread left.

You think pre-lci m5 comp suspension was really that harsh? Interesting. I have the 2019 m5 comp and suspension is not bad at all, and this me talking with NYC roads. The e63s was way worse, harder and jarring. The m5 comp is def softer. Now, the non comp m5 is a beautiful balance. Best suspension out of all 3 for rough roads.

Same - I was worried about this but was prepared to compromise. In reality, the car is absolutely fine and a long (UK) journey with the family this past week just reaffirmed that (my wife will be the first to tell me if she doesn’t like my cars!). My only criticism is at low speeds over speed humps and potholes - it can be a bit crashy so you have to really slow down - but it’s a tiny compromise given the upside of how well this car handles and behaves at speed.

Excellent review and Excellent presentation. I think I'm set on the Pre-LCI M5 now. Its cheaper, only a tiny bit slower, Arguably still more comfortable and just as practical. Plus, it sounds better. The only downside is it perhaps doesn't look as new and it doesn't come with a "competition" badge. But I don't think that really matters for me personally.

I have a non-comp 2018 M5 and on the street I find it better to drive everyday, but I only spent 15 minutes in a comp before I made up my mind. The power difference is completely imperceptible and they actually both cross the quarter mile in 10.9 seconds. On the track I definitely notice the weight of the car so perhaps the comp helps mask the weight on track. I upgraded to the comp/performance exhaust, which is worth every penny. I don’t look at a comp and regret my purchase or wish I had the top dog, which is about to be the CS. It’s an M5 after all and is absolutely ridiculous (in a good way) in standard and comp form.

I think the 550i appeals as the real powerful daily/family cruiser, rear wheel steer, glass roof. If you've got a sports car you don't need an M5 comp. If you don't then it makes sense as an all in one car. How many you'd really see being exploited down B roads, I have my doubts Vs smaller nimbler cars.

The M550i is plenty good, with even better colour and wheel options than the M5. It’s also the only V8 midsize German saloon where you don’t have to resort to the full M, AMG or RS treatment. It also rides better than its faster sibling. You can’t go wrong with this car, but £30,000 more buys you arguably the best petrol four-door right now. It’s up to you.

I really struggle with the purpose of this car. I would never take such a big, heavy car to a track. So, the M5 is lost on me. At this price range new, it makes more sense to me to buy a proper sports car and a solid GT cruiser. This car is beyond overkill for a daily driver especially in the US where you can't come close to ever approach its limits.

Channel repositioning or just some diversity? I'm loving the M2 CS despite it being auto. As a S213 E63 wagon owner, I find myself coverting an Alpina B3 wagon, it must be catching this Munich thing.
