The most powerful car from BMW M, the new #BMW M8 Competition. It’s a 625BHP V8 monster, with both X Drive four wheel drive and a 2wd drift mode. Arguably the best looking GT Sports Cars on the market, today you get the full review and comparison to the previous M6, and the inevitable comparison to it’s own internal rival, the epic M5 Competiton. So let’s have some fun in the New #M8 Comp!
We have history this car and I. We had some fun drag races on and off camera against my GT63S, and so I already have respect of it’s prowess from the off. That’s only grown since driving it. So over a year ago, we explored the New 8 Series via the brilliant diesel version. And during that review I shared a bit of history on the 8 that I’d I think is relevant to today too, so we will go from the original 6, take a look at the E31 M8 that never happened, then check the modern M6 cars too.
The new M8 takes a different approach to the old M6 cars. Once again, the 8 is aimed further up market. BMW call it a Sports Car, not a GT, and its dimensions are thus different. It’s shorter than the m6, lower in height, and wider. All indicators of this being a different type of model Most crucially, M-Xdrive, all wheel drive which is rear biased, with a fully switchable rear wheel drive mode, by itself makes the M6 a distant memory!
This links to the Hot V set up V8 twin turbo, with 625 BHP and a staggering 3.2 0-60 from this sports GT! Internally, it’s a different game too. The car has carbon core, a mix of steel, aluminium, a carbon fibre reinforced plastic. It makes it lighter than your typical super GTs, and helps with dynamics and rigidity.
M also used learning from the M8 GTE car, that then influenced the final car’s configuration.For example the engine cooling in particular has been bolstered for specific track usage scenarios like extreme lateral and longitudinal acceleration.
Suspension is of course M specific, with M forged links, anti rolls bars, sheer panels, increased camber on the front. It’s thus better in dynamic situations, but also better suited for luxury driving as we’ll see later. Oddly, no rear wheel steer, M wanted a more natural feel they said.
But will all these changes give it enough to topple the brilliant M5 Comp? Today we explore:

This is factually incorrect - the M5 comp has the same power and weighs less. The 2021 LCI I also has improved handling taken from the M8. Having two children I can't see how the M8 is better - if I was in my 20's or 50's (when my kids would have their own cars) then maybe the M8 would be a better proposition.

@Ross Yeh agreed - M8 is beautiful but wasn't a practical option for me. However my point about the horsepower and weight remains - 2021 M5 has 625BHP and weighs less so not sure what 'extra power' this chap was feeling.
This channel is an absolute dream for any petrolhead! The level of detail and depth of these reviews is on another level. Love it

@Mehdi Mohamed Savagegeese is good at analyzing cars in mechanical details and also the video quality is top level. But sometimes he is too narrow minded. He likes to hate a lot of cars instead of appreciating them. For example he doesn't like many high horsepower cars because he thinks it's too much for daily. Also he doesn't like literally all high performance SUVs which a lot of people love them even more than pure track machines and many thing else. I really can't stand those salty BS.

I've owned BMW's for about 15 years now, most recently a 2019 M5. I must say, the new M8 Competition is one of the most beautiful cars I've ever seen and driven. I got a call from my dealership when they first came in and I got to test drive one. All I can say is this car is unmatched on the road in class and performance!

The seats in my x4m comp are pretty much the same, the only difference is in m8 they are perforated due to cooling option. But overall same. But monster of a car. Great review

Glad you mentioned it. Cannot understand how something so lengthy can have almost nonexistent (rear) seating space. Design flaw or the natural limitations of track geared performance

Sir, I have owned ONLY BMW cars for over 20 yeras and everything you say about them is spot on. They are not what they used to be but in terms of driving; they are still better than Merc and Audi but not by much any more. Nice review, but I wish you’d compare it more to the 911 Turbo S, or just the turbo. My thoughts are that overall you prefer the 911 Turbo for its driver experience

I always visualized "Remove Before Race" like this - imagine being so hardcore gearhead that buy the car and drive it right off the showroom straight to a race track, and since the car is so brand new it still has protective nylons all over - so you Remove those Before Race lol. And since you are "Mr.Amg" I'd imagine the brand new car in question would be an AMG of some sort haha

We rented a convertible m8 comp coupe on a recent trip. Unbelievable car, acceleration is very impressive. The car we rented had steel brakes. I’d opt for the carbon ceramics, this car reaches triple digit speeds quickly and there is a lot of weight to slow down from those speeds. The steel brakes are barely adequate and the brakes on our car (albeit a rental that I’m sure lived a hard life) were already making a lot of noise with less than 20k miles on the car.
Another Great Video..I love my M8 it really has grown on me..after 4 years with M3s last being the M3CS this car is a blast to drive. And i have had a positive response from most people even non car people. my build date (i am in the US) was 11/19 so i have the older software and my exhaust has the pops and bangs..i do not think i am going to let them update it..mixed info on the forums for the US spec cars. well keep the videos coming. cheers

Great car and great review. The only thing I would say is comparing performance to the m5 is fair enough but you can’t compare them as purchase options as they are totally different, m5 is a family friendly daily saloon, m8 forget about it as a family daily car, it’s a Porsche 911 competitor
This is one of the best car review channels !
Just took delivery on a 2021 M5c just before Christmas. The M8 GC was the other car I was debating on. Went M5 because the car is being used as a daily and I don’t think the M8 is the better everyday car. The low sitting position, low roof line, long/deep dashboard and long hood are not things I’d want in a everyday car. No doubt the M8 is a better looking more special car but to me it’s not a great everyday car. It’s more of a 2nd car you keep in a garage for nice days but for it’s price (40k over the M5c) Id rather have a better sports car in my garage. For 150-160k I’ll gladly wait for a 992 turbo s to drop down to the price of a new M8. Couple side points. The 2021 M5 comps now have the same suspension as the M8s so the ride comfort should be the same unlike the pre LCI comps that had a firmer suspension. Also the newer m5s have the same new version ZF trans that’s in the M8 and same transmission software too so any M8 vs M5 speed comparisons done with a earlier version M5 wouldn’t be a good comparison.

I had the F90 M5 and just sold my 2023 M8 Competition, (bought a 2019 AMG GT R for the track). The M8 was probably my favorite car. I just needed a track car but I did like the. M8 better than the M5. Loved them both, but the bodystyle of the M8 is just so much sleeker and it rides beautifully. But, it is more money and the performance is nearly identical. Frankly, neither one is better, it's very subjective and do you want to pay more for the M8. Have fun, great cars.
I would say it’s giving the DBS super Leggiero a run for its money ,very similar very muscular powerful car love it .I’ve only just discovered your channel Christ knows how I’ve missed it what a little gem .cheers brother 😳👍

The Gran Coupe is absolutely beautiful and actually better looking than the coupe. By the grace of God I recently got the 840i GC, and i cant get over how stunning it is, compared with most cars you will see.

Lol I purchased a new M6 convertible …what an incredible waste of money. Very disappointing vehicle and engine issues from day one. Good GT but I’d get the Lexus LC500 all day over the M cars. Why? BMW engines are unreliable

Gran Coupe looks badly proportioned. M5 for 4 doors, M8 for 2 doors If you really wanted a good looking 4 door coupe, RS7 and AMG GT 4 door are lookers. Previous gen M6 Gran Coupe was very attractive, shame the M8GC looks shit

Great review! As an LCI M5 owner, I almost bought an M8GC instead but couldn’t justify the cost increase for essentially just the looks improvement. Everything else is the same (and with a smaller nav screen on the M8!). As for the reduced pops and bangs, did you drive with the exhaust mode button next to the shifter on and off to compare? Note this is NOT the same as the M1/2 button and can operate independently of engine mode setting. With the exhaust button off (not lit), you get no pops and bangs.

If it's not a mini copper I'll pas son the pops and bang. I buy this to goto some high end places where pops and bangs would just look ridiculous if I pulled up. Don't need pops and bangs when I goto the gym or the grocery store which is mostly what buyers of this car will use it for. Wish the looks were a bit more aggressive but I have a hard time passing on an 8 series coupe. I pay have to pick this up when it depreciates a bit.

I love the M5's way more than the M6's and the new M8 lineup. The M5 is so discreet and subtle, and in the same time so aggressive and mean, especially in fully blacked out specification. Every M car is absolutely beautiful in my opinion (if we exclude the new weird looking M3 and M4 models), but the M5 in every generation is my absolute favourite M car.

I knew someone that had the V10 2013 M6 and it was an oil leaking absolute nightmare. Unfortunately these newer BMW engines aren't as reliable especially over 100,000 as they were prior to the 2000s. I wanna be hopeful that these engines are better designed but as of recently, their reputation haven't been that great in the long run (shrug)
