Years ago I did the exact same thing. A cover like your old one on top of the factory one.

Very nice job! Looks great! My steering wheel leather is still in good shape, but it can get a bit sticky in the summer when the humidity is high or my hands are damp. I'm going to give it a good cleaning and treat the leather with a conditioner and see if that does the job.

I ordered one today & removed the wheel. I used a pick tool like yours to pull the T-30's back once loose, worked great. My magnet would not pull them out enough.

Great content, as always! The steering wheel looks great. Mine is rough looking, and the previous owner put a decent slip-on cover over it, but I've been wanting to do it "right" like you did. I feel a little less uneasy about removing my steering wheel now after watching how you pulled it. I replaced my arm rest cover as well (with some similar material), but I used some extra egg crate mattress foam for the inside. Worked great at first, but that foam is so worn now that my elbow sinks right down to the plastic, so I may try some of that material you mentioned. Where did you have yours done (upholsterer)?

Neoprene is what I planned to use as it's dense. I had a local upholstery shop do it because of the unique staples required.

Yeah that steering wheel cover is straight from China. Got one on eBay for 11 bucks, took 2 weeks to come from China but I was impressed with the “leather” seemed good quality to me

Awesome video. Your attention to detail is seriously impressive. I've got a 99 Tacoma SR5 I'm rehabbing right now. It still has the factory steering wheel cover and I'm looking to do a perforated leather cover like yours. One thing I noticed is that the factory cover rotates around the metal of the steering wheel, like if you were twisting a throttle on a motorcycle. I assume there was some kind of adhesive or something under there that's gotten gummy over time. Is there any way to address that before putting on an aftermarket cover? Would sewing the leather cover over top of the loose factory one lock it down better and keep it still? Any advice you can give would be appreciated!

You may need to remove the old cover.

@@SpeedysGarage Thanks for replying! I suspected I might. I'm pretty new to this. If I remove the old cover, I assume it's kind of thick. Much thicker than the thin leather wraps meant to go over it. What would you do if you were in my situation? Is there a padding you buy or something before putting on an aftermarket leather cover layer? Or do you just cut the factory cover, remove it, lay down some Super 77 or other adhesive and then put it back on before sewing on a leather cover? Again, thanks for the advice. I'm very grateful for it.
