It seems those knives are set at very close tolerances, nearly down to 'feeler gage' sizes...lol. Thanks for the video, it was good listening to your commentary and watching the action....just like being there! ....13

We still run an old 5830 and just had to replace the whole drum. Ran a piece of concrete through it, and completely ripped off 7 knife brackets and damaged 14 other knifes. We went aftermarket and put in a 40 knife drum where as our old drum was a 56 knife drum. So far in corn silage I can't see any difference in chop quality or power usage. I was told the 56 knife was for doing earcorn. Those newer choppers sure are a lot easier to get to the knifes and shearbar.

Nice Video Andy! Nice to see you filming the maintenance on that machine, my 8300 will be here shortly and seeing you work on your machine will help me when it’s time to work on mine. Definitely a few differences between this one and the older 7050 series that I’m running now.

Barend van Lindenberg thanks means a lot coming from another chopper pilot. I feel silly sometimes doing these videos when I know another operator is probably watching. Glad to hear it's something that will work for you.... Wait until you see the kennel processor install process.... Now that's a huge huge bonus.

Another good video andy thanks for sharing. Those knives are almost exactly like the the knives on our jd pull type chopper. im guessing that you have less knives though? Our pull type takes 48. Chopping grass def takes the life off the knives and shearbar, just always seems like more foreign material going through them than when chopping corn. We just got our new chopper delivered the other day, we're a small operation so its just a pull type again to replace an old deere. Ended up with one of the new dion 2430's it has a jd drum style cutter head. Initially i thought we were getting the dion f41 but ended up with the 2430 instead i think because we ordered through our local deere dealer and from what I've read the 2430 is a dion/deere thing. It def seems well built and much more like a self propelled type but in a pull type platform. Im guessing another week or 2 here and we'll be starting corn depending on moisture content. Thanks again for sharing its nice to see how other farms operate and what works best for each operation.

Jim Civitello we have a 40 knife drum Deere has several drums a 48,52& some others as well. Dion chopper I have heard and seen great things from them. Very very well made machine that will indeed perform like a self propelled, you will be very pleased with that machine. Or last pull type that we had was a Gehl 1290 I believe it was. They were good for the first couple years.

I'd rather change knifes on 7000 series and down. I was taught to put a coat of graphite spray on bottom of stationary knife for less problems adjusting. You got lucky on that broken knife. I've changed whole drum on a 7400, 3 times for a farm up north of you. To this day no one knows why every drum split in center. Knifes always a fun job not to many like to do.

I had no idea there was that much up keep and maint. on a chopper. Guess it is like any other harvesting machine in that respect. How many edges are on the bar? You could really see the rounded edge when you reinstalled it. I know it has to be a pain when you are doing a job and having to make sure the camera is right. Thanks for that effort cause I really enjoy the maint. videos. Started combining corn late today between showers. Got the headlands done at least. Gonna go at it again on Mon. So far looks like a good crop. Only the scale tickets will tell.
