I’m excited for today episode as it’s a new interview with one of my favorite bands. ever...
it’s one from our series revelations where featured artists go deep on their biggest hits. Joseph Williams the son of legendary composer John Williams has been friends with Steve Lukather since they were kids. In the mid 80s, Joe came on as Toto’s lead vocalist for the albums Fahrenheit, from 1986 and the Seventh One in 1988, which included Toto’s last two major hits of the decade.
Pamela, who as a songstress seemed like as big of a knockout as Rosanna with it’s pedal to the medal Joe Williams vocal and the big bad horns and Stop Loving You, which was a massive hit for Toto worldwide. Lukather and Joe tell us the story of the former, including some great insight on recording it,
Lukather and Williams have both been busy during the pandemic each reading solo album that sound like they could be the next toto album, they tell us about that as well as what’s next for the one of the premier classic American bands. It’s always a great time whenever we hear from these guys.

Toto is the biggest snub for the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame. Seriously, there is not a better group of musicians in the world. Each of everybody in that band is considered at the top of their instrument class. Together, they are absolutely unstoppable. When I think of a true Musicians band, these guys are the first to come to mind. I truthfully don’t think there is anybody better.

Speaking of which, session musicians like Jerry Hey, Gary Grant, Greg Phillinganes, Larry Carlton and Paulinho de Costa should also be inducted. Pick up virtually any album of the 70's and some 80's ones. Their name is on it somewhere. Horn players Tom Scott, Michael and Randy Brecker, and David Sanborn as well.

Ah, Pamela. Flash back to '88, sophomore year in college, and I fell hard for this new student, Pam, that had just transferred in. She ended up Friend-Zoning me, being new to the campus and not wanting to get tied down too quickly. My roommate just tortured me afterward, singing this song unprompted whenever he wanted to give me crap. Turns out, I really ended up loving the song, even after the real Pam had moved on and eventually got married out of college. Fast forward more than 20 years later, after two failed first marriages, we ended up re-connecting. Been married now since 2012, and couldn't be happier. And, this song still rocks! Only now, without the extra sting. I agree, Professor, Toto is one of the great American bands of all time. Without a doubt, one of the best collections of musical talent in one band. Thanks for the interview!

I've loved Toto's music for many, many years, but only recently have I begun watching their videos. It's amazing how much more meaningful the music becomes when you learn something about the individual members of the band. Years after their deaths, I find myself grieving the loss of Jeff and Mike. It literally hurts me when I watch them in the old videos, and know they were cheated out of so much of their lives. Some of my favorite songs - I Won't Hold You Back, I'll Be Over You - mean a lot more to me after seeing Steve Lukather singing with his heart in every word. I can't help feeling that he was singing about his own life. I wish I had some way to let them know how their music affects me, and how much it has become a necessary part of my life. All of this is badly expressed, but definitely from my heart.

Pamela is one of many great Toto songs. I'd rank it up there with their other classic hits like Africa, Rosanna, Hold The Line, and I Won't Hold You Back. What I also love about Toto is that, over the years, they never changed their sound to chase the current music trends of the day. They kept their sound and style consistent. Not too many artists can claim that.

Yeah in interviews Joe tells about that moment. Somewhere (don't know which interview or article) he said he tried to sing as much like Bobby Kimball as possible. He was really good in imitating other voices. For example, on his Early Years album he sounds similar to Michael Jackson.

I've been a Toto fan since day one as an 18 year old who discovered music. Toto have the ability to move your soul. It took me 30 yrs to see them live and have now seen them 3 times in different incarnations. One of the biggest compliments I heard was at the Hammersmith Apollo in London. There was a young kid in front of me in the mosh pit and he said "they sound just like they do on their records". Kind of sums up how professionally tight and gifted they all are. The snub by the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame doesn't really matter. As Luke has said on numerous interviews "They hate our guts". To me they are, and always will be, genuinely passionate and extremely gifted musicians who just want to get out there and do their stuff for the people who really understand them and love them. They've been thru hell with the loss of Jeff and Mike, such tragedy, but they continue on in their eternal memory. Thank for sharing the passion of Toto. Respect.

I once read, quite a while ago and I can’t remember where, that on the day Luke recorded the guitar solo on “Pamela” he had been golfing with Eddie Van Halen. When he got in the studio, Paich said, “Let’s hear some of that Van Halen stuff.” It’s exactly what I imagine Luke imitating Eddie would sound like.

It was a catchy hit and it got frequent airplay one minute and was gone the next. I heard it here and there on radio then but the fact the record company issue happened explains why it didn't go higher because it moved steadily up charts and abruptly stopped. I heard Stop Loving You on complications and no reason that couldn't have made top 40 as well.
