I would love be able to access full ChromeOS experience on any Android flagship. I doubt it'll happen any time soon, but one can dream.

No one knows if Google is going to use this or ChromeOS KVM which EXISTS btw based on a tech demo at IO24. Google denied this being a consumer product they said they were only demoing and playing selling with a technical feature and the OS new capabilities. So if that's the case then, how is this unfinished Android variant not just a developer playground. It's just like when Sony says they will have ubiquitous subscription catalog PS5 cloud gaming through Web browsers when they're gonna restrict it to consoles and handhelds. I don't believe Sony says and I don't believe what Google says. This is the developer mode playground for testing floating Windows on Android it's very unfinished as you can see and always has been and will be hard to maintain along slate phone and two versions of chromeOS one for arm and the other for x86. I doubt this would be the desktop mode external monitor solution for Android, ChromeOS KVM will be and you can substitute it with Windows 11 for $140 or you can use chroot for Ubuntu/Fedora. Look at Sony they will never have or keep up with enough infrastructure to support anyone on Android who pays for their highest cost subscription unlike Microsoft who has the technology and infrastructure they need and is much more capable of keeping up with it.

I don't get why we just have a Chromebook as the desktop mode. Just because I would think Google would benefit from supporting 1 OS instead of multiple.

My mom has really been enjoying the small form factor and 'tablet-ness' of the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 that I got her a couple years back. She's not doing anything complicated on it that couldn't be done by a phone, but it helps that it's larger. It'd be great if I could just give her a new phone and a portable, touch-screen monitor and say 'click this when you want to use the big screen' and be able to call it a day instead of having to give her a phone and also an entire computer that she now needs to get familiar with, update, install applications securely on, etc. So long as the UI for this Android desktop mode is more or less as intuitive as the UI for a phone, it'd be a far better experience for her.

I would say Android 16 or even 17 is more likely for 2 reasons: - we are close to feature freeze for Androind 15 and there is a lot more work that needs to happen to make this a good experience - delaying release until after Pixel 7 and Fold 1 are no longer receiving new Android versions means they can ship it too all Pixels and avoid any confusion on why it is not working on the older models.

Great, So now for all of us with Pixel 6s & 7s will we need a chromecast to use desktop mode with Android 14beta & 15? Would a USBc cable from the phone to a chomecast USBc, to skip using wifi, then the CC plugged to a HDMI monitor work?would it reduce lag for us Pixel 6 & 7 users? I have ordered the Nexdock XL & want to use my P6 until it no longer updates. Thank you!

not many people know but back before the Huawei ban. Hauwei phone have their own's Dex version "Huawei Desktop" too. It's exactly and imo more advanced then Dex at time (IDK now as it's been a few years I didn't have a Huawei phone). The recent Huawei HarmonyOS 4.2 completely remove the google code and supposed to be open source so we will expect all Chinese phones will be turning to HarmonyOS and have the Huawei Desktop function. Maybe that's why.

How can Google do such a half-assed job even though it's a beta version? They have had this desktop mode proposal in beta since Android 10. Granted, the external screen previously didn't work independently of the phone's main screen. I hope they really make this project live a long life, especially because, for tablets, an experience as close as possible to the Desktop is ideal for use. I'm here writing directly from my DEX, it's not perfect yet, but for my use I've already dispensed with my Desktop PC.

While android desktop is wonderful I have been using Microsoft remote desktop on my phone connected to a display keyboard and mouse since 2013 and it has totally replaced my need for a laptop. Now with dex it is even easier to use as I don't need wires between my phone and the display. Dex style systems are cool but remote desktop over a fast internet connection is just fantastic.

The issue/concern with the remote desktop solution is that your device is merely a terminal, you aren't accessing the apps you are otherwise using daily nor the data associated with them. You're relying on an internet connection and file synching, which is problematic at best. A local solution is the way to go wherever possible for ease of use and reliability.

@@nickthaskater You are accessing your office network and all the data stays at the office. You security is as strong as your vpn and your performance is as fast as your mobile network will allow. Both of thse issues have been solved over a decade ago and I simply do not understand why anyone would not be using this solution until microsoft decides to build a way to run desktop apps on your mobile phone over dex

  • @nickthaskater

@@Cyril29a I wasn't speaking to security or performance. I was speaking to the fact that network reliability isn't perfect and synching issues, especially with Microsoft products, are far too common to take for granted. Working with local applications that don't require network connectivity and local files which don't rely on being synched is always preferred. With a remote connection, you also lose the ability to just close and go and pick up where you left off right on your phone without needing to remote back in to access the files/application. Having spent many years working with thin clients and remote desktops, I would never voluntarily work in such an environment if a local/native alternative were available.

@@nickthaskater I don't know what country you live in but I have zero issues working remote, in Canada the latency is low enough that it is indistinguishable from a local connection for nearly all office style tasks and having a full windows environment trumps the clunky linux/android solutions even if they are local

@Cyril29a I live in Canada, too. No problem assuming there's no power outage or network issue or that you're not working in a remote location without a good signal. Connection aside, the point about having to go back into your remote session just to do a thing still stands rather than being able to simply unlock your phone and get back to work where you left off.

When you say computer do you mean desktop? They'll always be a need for a mouse and keyboard computer, every office job in the world relies on them and that doesn't take into account PC gamers and people that edit photo and video. That's not done on a tablet or phone.
