New hope for humans in an A.I. world | Louis Rosenberg | TEDxKC

Imagine a global "Hive Mind" that can tap the knowledge, wisdom, insights, and intuitions of millions of people, and produce a super-intelligence that is much smarter than any individual person. A new technology called Artificial Swarm Intelligence is making this possible and it could be our best defense against the emerging dangers of AI. Louis Rosenberg, PhD is a researcher, entrepreneur, and writer. He is currently Founder & CEO of Unanimous AI, an artificial intelligence company that amplifies human intelligence by building “hive minds” modeled after biological swarms. A prolific inventor, Rosenberg has been awarded over 350 patents worldwide for his work in Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and Human-Computer Interaction. Rosenberg was also the creator of the Virtual Fixtures system for the U.S. Air Force in the early 90's, the first immersive Augmented Reality system. Prior to his current role at Unanimous AI, Rosenberg was founder and CEO of Immersion Corporation (NASDAQ: IMMR) and Outland Research, and has worked as a tenured professor at California State University (Cal Poly). This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

This shows the hive mind making choice decisions better or more accurately. But "solving problems" or creating new solutions involves more than choosing the best, or the winner, from known possibilities.

Donald Baker technologically enhanced brains are already starting to happen. Researchers are implanting small electrodes in people's brains, and developing the interface. Combining that with rapidly advancing artificial intelligence, I think the dates that you suggest are realistic, but I think it's possible that it could happen more quickly than that.

This is an obvious statement. and, I am inspired by his approach! I'm positive he avoided discussing the challenges of us working together, to remind us that we can do this. Thinking that something or someone is preventing this way of life, is the psychological impact we suffer. But, throughout a 24 hour period, I can change my way of Thinking, depending on the responses I receive as I toss out random thoughts or rants. People look at you with disgust when you get emotionally involved in a rant, suggesting you are irradical or crazy! But, you are not. you are above their intelligence and know that you get more knowledge and more responses when you put your emotion into it. That's the inspiration of a Hive mind, fighting to survive in this world, and reconnect with all.

The thing is, if we all plug in and reach a level of wisdom aspired to here, a lot of people's minds will have to be blown, and realise things they practice ignoring, before mental lubrication and smooth functioning with out extreme resistance will occur. I guess that's what waking up is about except a lot of people are going to struggle with what they see about life and themselves and everyone around them and want to close their eyes or take exit left bc they simply cannot stand it or don't know what to do about what they see has been going on, most of all, in themselves. I think this hive mind has been operating for a while, not in the future but now. I'd like someone to talk about how people whose entire belief systems have to come crashing down or unwind, before they can be part of that swarm or get left out in the cold. Perhaps some will proudly say they want to be left out, left alone, but I don't think anyone wants to get that feeling of dying bc they are not adapting, of being left behind. Perhaps they do. Perhaps they will.

You are advocating the end of individual liberty and freedom. Humans already work together all the time to accomplish amazing things, and still maintain their individuality and freedom. Saying people will be left out in the cold because they might choose to remain independent and free is quite selfish and authoritarian on your part. Why on earth would you embrace a collective hive mind future?

I wonder how much more "hive mind" intelligent will increase as the number of people increases? I doubt it that will be very impressive. However, with the advancement of Foundation Models as we see in the last two years, the abilities of "AGI" intelligent is rocketing through the roof. How good can we catch up with such advancement using this "hive mind" approach against our alien neighbour is still yet to see.

Rock and metal communities share a love for mashing and their formations of mosh pits. These violent demonstrations aren't choreographed, they are derived from the subconscious. It's a great time. People do get injured. But the name of the game is not to injure. And if injured most near help out. It's perfect for people watching. They are all moving to the music. Also, wouldn't the hive simply reinforce personal biases based on the individual's or groups propaganda so far received? Why can't people see the difference between thinking/intelligence and consciousness. This entire talk ignores the elephant in the room. Consciousness is not the same as thinking. It is not what we consider intelligence. As long as scientists continue to ignore this central question of consciousness, they will never understand what is going on. Some scientists understand this. Most of those never make it on a TED stage because TED only reinforces "establishment" science and not cutting edge, visionary understanding. We need to break free of these constraints and think outside the box of traditional science.

  • @louisrosenberg9446

    @louisrosenberg9446

Louis here, the speaker in the the talk. Great question. And the answer is YES, the population within a swarm makes a big difference. In fact, every swarm has its own unique personality and intellect based on the unique mix of people who make it up. What we have found, however, is that regardless of the mix, the swarm will perform better (i.e. make better decisions, predictions, forecasts) than the majority would have made on their own. We have even done morality studies where we find the swarm behaves with a higher degree of morality than the individuals on their own. That said, if you had a population who lack empathy, or are deeply disturbed, I'd guess you'd get a swarm that behaves that way too (we've never done that experiment). But... what we have found is that the BEST swarms (smartest and most highly functioning) are the ones where the population is diverse. Diversity in age, gender, location, viewpoints... that makes for the most intelligent and enlightened swarm. In other words, making a monolithic swarm based on any characteristic is not ideal, but certainly not sociopaths as you say.

We've been able to do just as well and even better with AI methods like decision trees, neural networks, Q/TD learning etc. The problem with his solution is that is doesn't actually have anything to do with fixing the AI danger problem. Even if this is a good model it only allows us a way to interact with the decisions we want, but a way to govern the AI making potentially bad decisions

I think we need to be thinking about swarms as an "emergent intelligence" that includes both humans and algorithms, all working together in real-time as a unified system. The machine learning methods you mention are powerful tools, but they are not actually a form of intelligence. They are just mathematical methods for finding patterns in data. A swarm is a living system.

Pizza Republic No. That is carbon chemisty chauvinism. A living system has yet to be shown to have any particular advantage over a machine in terms of having intelligence. In other words, an algorithm can be just as smart as us.

Free market lol. We have never lived in a free market. The private western central bank led global elite have controlled our entire financial system for over a century. The debt based interest attached controlled currency and controlled market system we live in right now was never intended. It is at the heart of the global battle going on for all of us right now. They are trying to move us into a new system where they will now take total authoritarian control over every person's life on this planet. Wake up. Fight. An incredible new world people's based economy awaits us if we can defeat them.

I think we've been heading this way for decades: children are no longer taught HOW to think, but WHAT to think. That way, the collective can program us without most of us even realizing we've been programmed. We used to call it propaganda, but now, it's just marketing.

The other races of people of our 218 neighboring worlds are all friendly and professional colleagues. We need to insist our leadership accept the advice our galactic neighbors are offering, because if we continue to build our house on current designs and materials, we as a race are not going to survive ourselves. We will perish. Believe naturally the alien people are real and visiting Earth. Do not believe any propaganda against them. Our leadership is the only threat in all of this, as long as we continue to let them be.

Everything this man said was simple common sense. I'd hate to know how much these "smart people" paid just to listen at this guy. If we just humble ourselves and set all pride aside. We all could come to an agreement, solve problems, come up with the solutions and answers. Listening is key. We've already done so many things together. We simply don't see it that way because it's just another job to many of us.

Louis here - the TEDx speaker, and I agree with you, corporations are a flawed structure that has negative emergent properties. But that's because they are not built the way nature would build them. They are top down down structures, with 'the few' making decisions for 'the many'. A swarm intelligence is nature's way of having the many make decisions for the many. The way I see it - hundreds of millions of years of evolution has found a much better solution than the 200 years over which the modern corporation came to be.

Not to mention that even if a corporation was designed to work as a hive mind, there's no guarantee on how it would treat members outside the hive. Not to mention their are common flaws. Then again specialising brains. Polarising behaviour then certainty limited knowledge holders on topic outvoted. More advanced hive minds are probably going to need some work. But I only spent a few minutes thinking these thoughts.

Not quite, professor. Everything humans do, is still nature at work, just as much as in the case of bees. And the thing being criticized here, essentially capitalism, allows for the incredible lifestyle we sustain at this point in our history. What I don't really understand about your talk is why so few examples and why is this method so unknown if it works that great? Is it something extremely hard to do?
