One minor thing… I work on those units. The tank is for fuel for the unit. The Carrier and Thermo King units are totally self contained and they hold their refrigerant. One neat thing is that if a unit were to go down with a major problem, the unit could be swapped out in as little as 15 minutes with a good work crew.

I've wanted this particular model for the last 20 years. Hopefully we'll see the Cryo-Trans version as well as the other BNSF version that doesn't have the ice cycles along the top. But rather the BNSF cross-circle that has snow atop of the logo and ice cycles hanging below the logo. Who better to do it than ScaleTrains with great details, however there is one minor detail that is missing from this car. During my years as a Conductor on BNSF, I used to have so many of these reefers in my consist and when I had to set a few out to the yard. I would ride the end platform where the reefer unit is allowing me to stand during a shove move. However, BNSF had a rule where we could ride atop of the platform. But the chain had to be in place once we're positioned on the platform. With that being said, the metal chain that goes across the top of the platform where you climb up is the only thing missing from this version. It's basically to prevent someone from falling off to the side where the railing is open. I'll just add the chains myself, it's an easy add. There were times when some chains were missing on the end platform, so over the years it's a possibly that they've removed them permanently, which could explain why the model may not have them.

Glad to see some replicating these- back in the day I took an atlas model and gently removed markings and did decals to replicate these cars. Awesome…

The lousy rolling issue is caused by the 'roller bearing' axles. It's common on newer models using these types of trucks, all vendors. Swap the entire truck for good (non-rotating cap) to fix. The Micro Mark truck tuner will not work on this type.

Good review and thanks. If you could in future reviews, can u couple the Kadee height gauge directly to the coupler on the car or engine? This allows us to really see the differences better in height match, Thanks again.

Bruce, sure thing. I hope you are well, long time no chat. I used to couple but was told by some commenters that it ws hard to tell coupled. So going forward I will do both coupled and uncoupled. It may take a few videos before you see this because I have some already recorded and ready to go online.

I’m looking for some Tropicana reefers

Do they cycle on and off by themselves over time or are diesel units on until you cycle the system off?

Curious as to what camera you are using and if you're thinking about uploading in 4K. Some of these detailings need to be seen in 4K.

I have 4k capabilities and did 4k for a short while. When looking at TV, computers and phones there wasn't a noticeable difference. The 4K files are huge so it makes it very hard to store many videos or edit.

I got a full train of these cars, look amazing but have noticed that only 2 ST locomotives is enough to stringline them on wide radius curves. I was contemplating adding some weight but with a long train that may hurt just as much as it could help. I’ve oiled all of the bearing cradles on the trucks, anything else I can do to lower the drag or keep from string lining?

Check the power contacts maybe they are a little tighter than they need to be on the wheels/axles.

Swap the trucks for non-rotating cap. These trucks have a lot of drag. Drag will cause strinlining.

You know... if you want better quality you should just start your own business and produce your own cars. Sorry... had to rib ya. 😂 They are some good looking cars. If I heard correctly from a video I saw awhile ago a single train load is limited to 15 of the reefers.
