New Grizzly 8" jointer (G0947) with helical type cuttinghead (3 of 3) after set-up

This is Grizzly's newest benchtop jointer. In addition to a wider than normal benchtop jointer size, it has a spiral type cutter head. Instead of the conventional longitudinal cutter knives, it has smaller helical type cutter heads. So, you get the benefit of a helical head without the price as well as less noise compared to the typical cutter knives.
Out of the box, the infeed and outfeed takes needed adjustment. The owner's manual goes into fantastic detail for set-up and troubleshooting. This is my first jointer and it didn't take long to assemble and dial in.
Side note, Grizzly did not give me this jointer. I had to purchase it.

Thanks for the review! I just bought the Grizzly 9” bench top bandsaw and it’s great as well.

I got the Wahuda 8" jointer for $45 more. It's made by a different manufacturer in Taiwan and has 4-sided carbide inserts, versus the 2-sided HSS on the Grizzly. The Wahuda also has cast iron tables versus the cast aluminum on the Grizzly 8". I really like it. Took me about 1/2 hour to get the tables dialed in.

Nicely detailed review Richard! I managed to finally wear out my Grizzly 6” bench top jointer and pulled every penny possible from it. I moved from furniture to woodturner many years back when my wood journey necessitated spindle parts. I found turning so enjoyable that my shop time tripled along with tool research & investment strategies. Fortunately my Hardwood supplier operates in a vast warehouse and find very little (if at all) any need for soft woods from the Big-Box yards. Layout, tool tables and skill sets are some of the wonderful benefits I discovered all those years ago. I also have the Grizzly 12” drum sander G0459P which led to the much needed dust system. It’s the classic “Rabbit Hole” and balancing act: Time-Space-$$$. Grizzly offers and solves so many “Tool” issues and Learning Lessons. There is always an upgrade available either thru Grizzly or it’s competitor's. I just happen to be in that “Rabbit Warren” over a new jointer at the moment so thank you for your time, honesty and efforts involved in producing this video.

Thanks for your review and setup tips - I have a small woodworking shop in our family garage and a decent benchtop jointer was the only way I'd be able to get one. I ended up with the same model and after a little bit of adjustment I'm happy with the quality of the edge joints I can get now.

One other question - the manual says to make sure you are milling your lumber with the grain, but the grain on the walnut I have doesn't always follow the pattern they show. Have you had any issues with grain direction when jointing your boards so far?

I’m in the same boat. Small shop. Not a lot of funds. Been using a table saw and planer to do jointing, but it’s a nuisance. Thinking about getting one of these.

Richard - thank you for making this video. I just got the G0946 and I haven't put it together yet. Are there any tips & tricks for setting it up that you might want to share? This is also my first Grizzly product and it came earlier than I had expected and I'm also impressed so far. I got a Craftsman Jointer on eBay that I am going to send back because this looks like a much better machine. I also got the spiral cutterhead, but it looks like there aren't enough blades to do the job, lol. How has it worked for you so far? Since I've never used a jointer before I don't know how much force is needed to push down on a board to plane that face of it flat. Are you going to put in a Y connector for this and your planer? What kind of planer do you have? I am also saving up for a Sawstop or a Harvery saw - probably a Sawstop. I totally agree about lumber prices. S4S walnut at Home Depot is about $32 per board foot - just insane.

I just received my G0947. It's on the table, but I want to read the manual first. I do know that a true helical cutter head would about double the price. I have checked and found that there are no shelix upgrades for this model, yet. There is an upgrade for the 6". I'm sure that upgrades will be available in the future, not too distant I hope. I'll be saving up to get the upgrade when it's available. I hope to have my up and running in a couple days. (I'm committed tomorrow.) Everything I've read indicates that the helical type cutter head is still superior to the usual straight blades. You can purchase a set of replacement blades for the G0947 that are solid carbide and have 4 cutting sides. $63.25. But, for $500, $425 for a few more days, what do you expect? This is a good entry level jointer that will do well until I can afford $2000 for a good floor model 8" jointer.

Thanks for the video Richard, I've been thinking of picking up the same model. I noticed they replaced the cast iron bed with cast aluminum. How durable does the bed feel to you, do you think it'll hold up over time?

It is a solid machine. I was seriously impressed with the quality of packaging let alone how this jointer feels. It really seems like Grizzly wants quality associated with their products. I will try to do a comparison video with this and my brothers helical 6" grizzly jointer to see if there are any differences but I suspect they will be minor.

OK - I have the GO946 and I think I've set the outfeed table too high, but I can't seem to lower one of the screws now. I'm a bit confused about the heights of the infeed/outfeed tables because most videos say that the outfeed table should be set slightly higher than the infeed - and most of the videos here recommend that it be set level to cutterhead blades which makes sense to me. However the Grizzly manual says that the outfeed table should be set level to the cutterhead body. I've tried some cuts and so far am not impressed. I set the infeed table to 0 and set it level to the outfeed table figuring that lowering it would do the job, but so far my cuts haven't been great. Any advice you have would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry critical word got dropped and I couldn’t edit. I’ll try again. The outfeed table should be set even with the height of the cutter when it’s at its highest point.

@Theonebaddude when adjusting your jointer do you need to consider the indeed table? I saw videos where I should lay my straight edge on the out feed and the blade should pull it 1/8 inch or so?.. just want to make sure I'm doing everything correct. Thanks man

As an Old Tech writer, the constant inter mixing of the terms spiral and helical is driving me nuts. The manufacturers are as guilty as any one for this. The title of this post says helical while the name plate in the picture says spiral. I am about sold on a Grizzly planer which has a helical cutter, but to access its information on the Grizzly site I have to click on a button that says Spiral. PS What nobody discusses is the effects that the cutter head style and number of rows has on the optimum cutter head RPM, stock feed rate, and motor loading.

Knock knock, it’s the jargon police open up- None of the bench top jointers has a spiral cutter head. They have a segmented cutter head. A spiral cutter head (also known as a shelix cutter head) would more than double the cost of this machine. I’ll let you off with just a warning this time- Have a good day 👮🏽‍♂️

Spiral vs helical similar but different. Shear angle of helical produces cleaner cut. But after spending 6 hours yesterday sharpening vintage 10” knives and fiddling with them to get the machine setup again. I’m passively shopping for a replacement
