So many people see the word ‘grimdark’ and immediately think ‘desaturation.’ I love how you pull back from that mindset and keep a very saturated color tone, while focusing more heavily on weathering and battle damage. Incredible work!

You are confusing grimdark with blanchitsu. Grimdark is pretty much embracing dirt and weathering, while blanchitsu is specifically based on the work of Blanche.
Another blessed day. I love the variety we've been getting, Bob Ross style painting has meaning videos, new skirmish game, and now GW helpful tips. That's basically my perfect rotation lol

@kylej3796 probably because of the hair 😆
I absolutely love using those triangle sponges. They're generally very cheap, a bag lasts a good while, you can cut them and pinch in a tweezer for smaller work, and the best thing is they don't leave lint like cotton balls or Q-Tips.

I totally agree!
Proper grimdark. Straight to the point, easy to follow and replicate.
Really fantastic, thanks for the great tips! Anyone who thinks speed painting just means a dry brush and a wash should watch this for a 10x better looking mini with smart and efficient techniques

I wrote you before on a video and told you how shaky it was and you responded you have fixed that. You certainly have. This video is so awesome. I have come to always visit your videos and have learned a great deal from your training. I thank you for that. This video was another awesome video. Wow. Not everybody is shooting for the demon with their painting skills. Once I stopped and started painting for enjoyment and fun, I found my painting zen. VV you rock and I love your banter and collaboration with the other creators. I have enjoyed Ninjon's channel quite a bit lately. They guy is a riot. Skal!
Fun painting for ultramrines, prime black, base red, zenithal white, base blue contrast, and you get a cool ultramarine with purple red undertones and shadows.
Glad to see "wet the drys, dry the wets" works for Warhammer too :)

Oil painting principles right ? Also heard thin on thick or thick on thin. I've barely dapped my toe into that pond. Just oil washes so far. Just got in some scale 75 oils. Caught them on sale. Half price. Will be giving it a go in the next week or so.
AN HOUR!?!?!? *Throws paints and brushes in bin due to embarrassment* :D Ahh the efficency that comes with so much experience. But I am so happy to see more classical style Termies back with new sculpts. Back in the original lore (and even in game) they were an army unto themselves. So cool.
Great video, Vince (as Always!), thanks!!
Love to see grimdark black Templars!
Well Vince, you got me to start another army with this video!
Great stuff. It's good to see really basic techniques that anyone can do with a little practice and get very good results. Using stippling and contrast is such a perfect way to get the most out of gw range of stuff. Hope this video reaches those that need it. Cheers vincie lad 👊

Great video. Going to try this method on some Deathwing termies I’ve had hanging around for some time - swapping out the blue for some skeleton horde contrast 👍

Lovely stuff and the best of all... you are seemingly the only youtuber ever to pronounce abaddon correctly... Thank the emperor. Top bloke 👍
Looks stunning!
Great tutorial, I've used your technique for my Blood Angels Terminators and I'm totally in for this grimdark style. :)

Great video, just a note on the sponges for wiping the streaking grime. Make sure the are non latex sponges, as the latex can flake onto the paint job.

Superb!
Always enjoy you vids
Half way through this, i'm asking myself, "Why didn't he just airbrush Talasar Blue over his zenethil?". But after the streaking grime went on, i understood the why - you were wanting to use a contrast paint brushed on, and you overcame the crappy finish it makes on large, broad surfaces via the streaking grime, coupled with sponging on the various patina colors. Brilliant!

Did a similar paint job for my death company kill team - if you can use many imprecise techniques and that actually works with your color scheme, makes wonders when it comes to speed painting.
Great video! I am finally taking the leap from citadel paints to monument hobbies. Inspired to try new paints. Will keep some citadel paints as there are so I love. Looking forward to your colors and mixing some of the base set to create something new.

nice one, Vince
This is exactly what I’ve been looking for to resurrect my Astra Militarum army after 10+ years out of the hobby, thank you!
Great tutorial. Both entertaining and informative. I have yet to see anyone do a Grimdark scheme for metallic armor. Would really like to see someone tackle that.

I am always nervous to do oil washes but wanted to use them on my S2D army think I may try this method you made it seem much less complex than most videos i have seen.
Another winner. I typically have to varnish when using enamels over citadel contrast ... but perhaps I rub it too hard lol.
HC 306 for Vince's gold recipe. The antique gold pigment from GSW really adds bling.

Before you shake the bejeezus out of streaking grime, do a careful shake and check if the seal is tight. mine was skewed/warped and i shook a lot of it all over my table, leg and floor. Something that is averse to water is bad to clean up.
👍👍 let's get kraken!

There is so many varieties of Steaking Grime, what one am I looking for? I saw on the bottle AK-012 for all vehicles, but when I looked it up it said for dark yellow vehicles. Just don’t want to ruin my steps up till this point. Thanks and amazing video! Keep up the great work Vince!
@VinceVenturella

Yep, just straight bog standard streaking grime, no for specific vehicles.
I hope I’m not the only one who got childhood karate kid flash backs, when you said: ‘Whipe with the wet, whipe with the dry…’ LOL

Love it Vince, thank you for the always informative video! Any chance though the audio could be a bit louder? I always seem to have the pump up my speakers on HC vids :) Could you use this method for other chapters and tanks?
@VinceVenturella
11 ай бұрын
Yep, would work fine with other chapters and larger vehicles for sure.
Iama need to order me some streaking grime. I want to try this on some dark angels.
This was amazing vince, thank you! You completely captured the contrast to brown I love with a grimdark style. I do have a question however. I am doing a death skulls ork army, primarily with black and blue accents. How would you suggest capturing the dirty contrast with something like the colour black? Do you have a grey tone that might work to sell the aesthetic?
@VinceVenturella
11 ай бұрын
It's tough, black doesn't really show the damage as well. You can either use a lighter brown or skip it. You want a grey for the light, high value damage. Things like pigment in the lower levels become really important.
Grim Dark has never been my Bag...I like the gonzo Bright Clean colours of say the Bloodquest Comics...but that was simply fantastic.
I love the combination of contrast paints and grimdark techniques, the most fun parts of both have been executed perfectly in my opinion. Does anyone know what the superglue mixture used for the basing might include?
@RochelleHasTooManyHobbies
11 ай бұрын
I do believe that in the past he's used straight-up super glue. Nothing special, just a liquid-y super glue straight from the bottle.
@VinceVenturella
11 ай бұрын
Yep, just straight up super glue medium.
You are the technomancer
Great tutorial, mini looks awesome! Any pointers for achieving a similar look for Black Templars? Would you go with actual black for the basecoat, or more dark grey? Would it be better to use brighter colors like silver for chipping to be better visible than Rhinox hide on black? Cheers!
@VinceVenturella
11 ай бұрын
Black is tough, the darker browns won't show. That means you need to either use a brighter, lighter brown or just skip that step. You will want a light grey for that step. The pigment around the lower areas of the mini do wonders for darker armors.
Wonderful tutorial Vince, helped me immensely! Quick question tho' - since you painted the metals on before the streaking grime, how about varnish afterwards? Did you matt varnish it anyway, or just left it as is? Thanks in advance, and again thank you for making grimdark "click" for me :)
@VinceVenturella
11 ай бұрын
Just left as is, no need to varnish.
Great video Vince. I was wondering if it’s possible to adopt this approach effectively for darker tones of marine armour (dark angles, crimson fists etc.)?
@VinceVenturella
11 ай бұрын
Sure, the darker you go, the less the brown will really show up unless you lighten that tone and flip it to maintain contrast, but they will work.
A fun little thing that happened to me is that I got myself the book History of art in Japan by Tsuji Nobuo. And I started reading it and then I realised my internal speech when reading academic text written in english is the voice of Vince
