So many people see the word ‘grimdark’ and immediately think ‘desaturation.’ I love how you pull back from that mindset and keep a very saturated color tone, while focusing more heavily on weathering and battle damage. Incredible work!

You are confusing grimdark with blanchitsu. Grimdark is pretty much embracing dirt and weathering, while blanchitsu is specifically based on the work of Blanche.

I absolutely love using those triangle sponges. They're generally very cheap, a bag lasts a good while, you can cut them and pinch in a tweezer for smaller work, and the best thing is they don't leave lint like cotton balls or Q-Tips.

I wrote you before on a video and told you how shaky it was and you responded you have fixed that. You certainly have. This video is so awesome. I have come to always visit your videos and have learned a great deal from your training. I thank you for that. This video was another awesome video. Wow. Not everybody is shooting for the demon with their painting skills. Once I stopped and started painting for enjoyment and fun, I found my painting zen. VV you rock and I love your banter and collaboration with the other creators. I have enjoyed Ninjon's channel quite a bit lately. They guy is a riot. Skal!

Fun painting for ultramrines, prime black, base red, zenithal white, base blue contrast, and you get a cool ultramarine with purple red undertones and shadows.

Oil painting principles right ? Also heard thin on thick or thick on thin. I've barely dapped my toe into that pond. Just oil washes so far. Just got in some scale 75 oils. Caught them on sale. Half price. Will be giving it a go in the next week or so.

AN HOUR!?!?!? *Throws paints and brushes in bin due to embarrassment* :D Ahh the efficency that comes with so much experience. But I am so happy to see more classical style Termies back with new sculpts. Back in the original lore (and even in game) they were an army unto themselves. So cool.

Half way through this, i'm asking myself, "Why didn't he just airbrush Talasar Blue over his zenethil?". But after the streaking grime went on, i understood the why - you were wanting to use a contrast paint brushed on, and you overcame the crappy finish it makes on large, broad surfaces via the streaking grime, coupled with sponging on the various patina colors. Brilliant!

This was amazing vince, thank you! You completely captured the contrast to brown I love with a grimdark style. I do have a question however. I am doing a death skulls ork army, primarily with black and blue accents. How would you suggest capturing the dirty contrast with something like the colour black? Do you have a grey tone that might work to sell the aesthetic?

  • @VinceVenturella

    @VinceVenturella

    11 ай бұрын

It's tough, black doesn't really show the damage as well. You can either use a lighter brown or skip it. You want a grey for the light, high value damage. Things like pigment in the lower levels become really important.

I love the combination of contrast paints and grimdark techniques, the most fun parts of both have been executed perfectly in my opinion. Does anyone know what the superglue mixture used for the basing might include?

I do believe that in the past he's used straight-up super glue. Nothing special, just a liquid-y super glue straight from the bottle.

Yep, just straight up super glue medium.

Great tutorial, mini looks awesome! Any pointers for achieving a similar look for Black Templars? Would you go with actual black for the basecoat, or more dark grey? Would it be better to use brighter colors like silver for chipping to be better visible than Rhinox hide on black? Cheers!

Black is tough, the darker browns won't show. That means you need to either use a brighter, lighter brown or just skip that step. You will want a light grey for that step. The pigment around the lower areas of the mini do wonders for darker armors.

Wonderful tutorial Vince, helped me immensely! Quick question tho' - since you painted the metals on before the streaking grime, how about varnish afterwards? Did you matt varnish it anyway, or just left it as is? Thanks in advance, and again thank you for making grimdark "click" for me :)

Just left as is, no need to varnish.

Great video Vince. I was wondering if it’s possible to adopt this approach effectively for darker tones of marine armour (dark angles, crimson fists etc.)?

Sure, the darker you go, the less the brown will really show up unless you lighten that tone and flip it to maintain contrast, but they will work.

A fun little thing that happened to me is that I got myself the book History of art in Japan by Tsuji Nobuo. And I started reading it and then I realised my internal speech when reading academic text written in english is the voice of Vince
