Si does backpacking Lasty does Everesting Dan does Hair care product testing (BTW, a good video for him and the new guys would be "How to avoid Helmet Hair at the Cafe Stop" Could be a challenging year.
Those pinon drop bars shifters are my dreams!!!
I'm sitting next to my gravel bike, blogging about gravel bikes, watching a video on gravel bikes. Is this heaven?

We heard it's a place on Earth.
"Feynderr mounts, if you're an American.." XD So accurate.
That pinion bike with the road shifters is basically what I’ve been imagining as a perfect bike for ages. I would love something like that.
Great show and excited to see what this new bikepacking race in Europe will be...
I have had an ortlieb backbag for 4-5 years on almost dayli use and it has hold up nicely. I've carried heavy loads with it like groceries for a week and even stones for sauna stove (20 kg of them).
Thumbs up Vielo on that beautiful versatile bike. Love the colour too. On luggage- love my panniers but would love a more “ briefcase” looking set for work.
Those versacages look really practical, do want.
Definitely get a ride on that Midnight Special. Interested in your review of it!!!
Excited to hear about Josh's race, I hope it becomes a thing!
I could watch Simon and Oliver all day ,,another great video
Simon should do the race, what an amazing opportunity!!
I honestly am not very interested in bike packing but watched this anyway and these two presenters are so good they make me want to buy a gravel bike and ride it to Canada or something.

Haha, well that's great to hear! Go for it
You can use fenders as mud guards too if you like!
Bikepacking vs bike touring...we just go out because we love riding our bikes. Thanks GCN. More power to you.

There's no more distinction between road and mountain anymore! The links have all been filled! The channels must battle, there can only be one highlander!

It's kind of funny: some of the new gravel bikes looks a lot like john tomac's downhill bike from the early years of mountain biking.
I want the Moots Baxter for MTB marathon racing and long sunday wondering around rides
I think the tires on the Vielo are WTB Horizons which are 47mm (not 40mm). On a 650b, 40mm tires would be really small.
@jusbe47
6 жыл бұрын
Probably doesn't matter. Given the price of the Vielo, hardly any of them will get ridden anyway.
Rode my first century yesterday, really want to get into the longer distances and bikepacking/touring.

Great effort Pete! Go for it
"fender" love it. I am American and loved the American accent when you said it also. Lol
GCN should mean Gravel cycling network
That Moots Baxter is exactly what I want to do with my hardtail... drop bars. I'm 6'-2" and 235 lbs, so having that front shock fork really helps smooth things out. Is swapping out my flat bars to drop bars easy to do? Shifter/brake levers easy to swap for something that will work without changing the drivetrain ?
A refillable air cartridge would be great like the topeak one but sized to fit in your back pocket. More environmentally friendly than one use co2 cartridges available today
@tawanga

A CO2 cartridge is filled to about 700 psi/50 bar. Hard to get there with a floor pump.
@cliveweir

tawanga fair point!
Moots bike is one was asking for few years but price is insane. XC 29er with drop bars sounds like a lot of fun until you realize it cost 8-9k
Midnight Special just ticks all the boxes for me. Such a well thought-out modern build and all for $2000 US, Surly hit a ringer with this one.

I lean more towards the bridge club but the midnight is nice.
Would be nice if Shimano were to bring out a 1x gravel groupset, think XT meets Ultegra. As I didn’t want to use Sram my latest bikepacking bike is using Di2
Standing in front of a Maloja cabin....nice!
can i borrow some spacers? @ 7:31
5:05 Si that fiftyone behind you is a stunner
The Vielo of very charming, but lacks the much needed rack mounts and a form crown headlight mount.
Long waiting for this
Also hopefully with more companies making bikepacking bags and accessories maybe the quite ridiculous prices will go down somewhat. I can get a 65-80 litre hiking backpack with bells and whistles for the same price as a 14 litre bikepacking saddle bag.
I wonder if there is a market for full-brimmed helmets? 9:22 made me think of this.
where can we get more info on Josh's challenge? sounds like something to concider!
Is foxter bike a good brand of bike?
The Vielo is a Beauty! Looks like the Ghost ••• Road Rage -series (and, to a much lesser extent, the Norco Search [XR] Carbon - owing to the beautifully oblique rear end). Not compatible with racks, apparently? That is a shame.
11:34 Josh dropping some vocab knowledge-bombs.
any news on the Apro ranger 80, cant seem to find anything about it
Is gravel bikes some kinda of selling old school bikes branded as "in fashion" bikes at a bigger price? :D
Who makes that pinion drop bar bike?
Ha ha if Si can ride Wales in just one day then I think that he secretly thinks that he could totally manage a monster 1000 mile effort. (most of us would cry and think yeah maybe do that in a month of touring!) Interesting bikes there and very cool to see that someone has gone ahead and done a steel version of a Gravel bike... its nice to see that people are starting to think about the versatility and providing clever solutions to finding space to attach or store things on the frame. I am interested to see how bike bags adapt to make use of frame shapes and would be interested to see how many of the gravel bikes would go down specifically the 650b route or would give the rider the flexibility to run 650b for off road but still have 700c capacity for more on road riding... Interesting times. Shame that we can't just stick with what Ollie calls them and just go with adventure of off road touring bikes...! Loving having Ollie on the channel.I await to see him and Jon in the tech clinic!
@tawanga
6 жыл бұрын
Gravel bikes were built of steel long before any other material.
@HaloTupolev
6 жыл бұрын
Long long LONG before any other material took off. Just look at some of the bikes created by the old French randonneuring movement; people were making fat-tired 650b road bikes with sub-compact cranksets for handling mountainous unpaved roads all the way back in the WWII era.

If the Ortlieb bags are up to their standards those would be amazing.

It's touring, but it's adventurous touring, because you're riding an adventure bike. Everything Millennials do has to be an adventure.
@tychay
6 жыл бұрын
wow, such hate. i’m a gen-x, so i guess i’m not cool enough to trash millennials or “hipsters” and instead will answer you literally. Seen one way, bikepacking is an offshoot of ultralight backpacking which grew up in the late nineties when materials and other innovations made it possible to do away with a internal or external backpack frame, use trail runners instead of hiking boots, and bivies instead of full on tents. Once the gear got smaller, putting that on the bike meant that you could do away with panniers. Seen another way, bikepacking is an offshoot or when bike touring decided to go off-road. Mountain bikes didn’t have mount points for racks and wider panniers would snag against branches on narrow singletrack. seatbag and handlebar bags don’t need mount points, don’t increase the cross sectional area of the bicycle, and if expanded, they could fit enough gear if the gear was minimalized to meet that requirement in the middle. Not everyone has a n+1 touring bike and had to live with the n=1 mtb. Either way, bikepacking fills a niche from off-road touring to ultra endurance self supported road race events like the transcontinental. Bike touring with panniers on a reliable touring bicycle fills a different niche, as does the “credit card” touring that arose in the 80’s. Also, don’t knock the gear. Some things from the adventure bike/bikepacking world like X-pac in some bags are a good idea no matter what sort of riding you are doing. Ortleib brought us truck tarp panniers, X-pac is just as waterproof but a heck of a lot lighter.

Bike packing is bike touring while wearing a lumberjack costume, yes.

I think gravel bikes will evolve into hardtail 29ers with skinnier tires and drop bars and rigid forks. EG Salsa cutthroat
So they can make pinion work with road shifters but MTB is stuck with the twist grip?!?! WHY
7:37 what bike is that?
I don’t know were there’s any Gravel

Wait Wait... got it... while waiting for the Global Gravel Bike Network to launch... came up with a new description... B Road Cycling where the B could stand for, well B or for Back Road cycling.... but that would mean it would be the GBRN or I suppose we could use D for Dirt Road
Could it be Si and Ollie are maternal twins separated at birth? They both get so excited about bike tech, it's virtually impossible to tell them apart...lol
3:45 Ah ok, that´s why you need 650B wheels...to get 40 mm tires on your bike. Luckily I can fit 45 mm tires with 700c on my Trek Checkpoint =D
If Pinion makes a light ceramic gearbox I'd be so happy.
It's so cool, awesome and super nice... I love it!

I have a Trek MTB and a specialized cross bike which I use to tour with. no way I.m going to fill my little place with a 3rd bike nor pay that amount$$. So it looks like I'm going to have to bring out the hack saw, welder and hammer to fit bigger fatter wheels. we have lots of gravel paths in the UK and you feel it straight away, tyres wont last on that kind of surface. its a good thing most tracks are half and half various surface
@briantrend1812
5 жыл бұрын
my favourite tyres for touring across Europe were continental countryman. On MTB im surprised by just how long the basic Bontrager that came with the bike have lasted, riding regularly over 3 years and the tread is excellent
There is a Bike called a ATB All Terrain Bicycle...these do just about everything...
Remember when you could ride almost any bike on gravel, including your touring/trekking/randoneurring bike, hybrid, cyclocross bike, or XC bike? Pepperidge farm remembers. I'm not spending $2000+ on a bike "purpose built" to handle the least exciting of all the surfaces. I'd rather just modify an old hybrid with drop bars and then jump off a cliff.
"Faindeur mounts" LOL
A true ATB is the Way to go...
did Josh say "validifies" ? so much for the brits being masters of the English language . heh heh.

If you still looking for a Name for Gravelbikes Hey dont you call it NLB....short form for No Limit Bikes...I own a Marin Gestalt since 10 months During the Winter I rode it with mudguards and big all season tires..now in Summer I ride the Gestalt with 28mm Contis GP and doing Gran Fondoa around 200km...ans nothing can stop this bike. I also use it everyday for commuting......I Love my NLB.....or gravel...its the swiss knife for all biker....
One of the main reasons roads got better at the beginning was because bike owners demand them to be improved, now were goind back to gravel roads? What happened? :XD
I own that hat in green😬

Nice!
vielo looks like ghost endless
"Vilify"? Didn't he mean "Validate"?! :)
What has happened to the All Terrain Bicycle...this is a better idea, because you only need one bicycle...
The future of gravel bike is bike with flatbar, full suspension, fat tyres and it's call MTB.
Adventurers Wet Dream...Oh Si....
"...an adventurer's wet dream..."??
The Baxter 8:40 is ugly and... I don't know... useless? :D Why not combine a road bike with a nice 800mm handlebar as well?
1:52 back packing thru Europe are we,WTF. 🤣
Was NOT Disappointed
Isn't this the same bike as the Velo at 5:00 into this video? kzread.info/dash/bejne/f6KiysWyd7qdf84.html
