RIP GSC. It already has a lower play rate and now it has a huge road block in its massive price

This new combat patrol just made the upcoming Hachette Combat Patrol magazine a lot more appealing. I like the models in the new CP, but the older one was awesome and the best CP out of all the older ones.

Yup. Everyone was afraid this would happen. THE best Combat Patrol drops from S tier to C tier in my opinion. Just because it's better than Dark Angels, Admech, and Space Marines CP's doesn't make this good. Sure, a C is better than an F, but still. Also, Combat Patrols going for 170 dollars is insane to me.

There was no way - NO WAY - the new Combat Patrol could hold up to the old one. And still: I kinda like it. Both old and new Combat Patrol complement each other well, you get a cool variety of models and almost exactly 1000 points. As somebody who has neither Ridgerunner, Jackals nor Jackal Alphus - because they are hilariously overpriced kits - this new box is good news to me. Now if only GSC had got more than JUST ANOTHER FRIGGIN CHARACTER ON FOOT...

well the old combat patrol contents will be in the hachette magazine and no one collects them, so at some point the secondary market will be flooded with neophytes. should help newcomers. as a long time GSC collector, I'm totally nabbing exactly one of those new combat patrols.

Can you do an overview of how both these combat patrol boxes would work with their upcomming Battleforce? and if any combination of them would work for the base of a 2000 points army

I appreciate that the new combat patrol complements the old one really well, and it also complements the upcoming battleforce really well. There is overlap, but all of the overlapping models are ones you're going to want more of anyway. Both the old combat patrol and the new one have acolytes, which you probably want more of. The old combat patrol and the battleforce are also mostly overlap, but even that is all stuff you are going to want a lot of. Personally, I'm hardly interested in the game (mostly because I don't get to travel much, and nobody in my area is interested in playing), but I'm still excited to get the new combat patrol because I don't own most of these models, and even the battleforce because all of the older models are ones I love working with, and I don't have any of the new genestealers yet, and the new character looks amazing.

What pisses me off about the new combat patrols is they'd be perfect second boxes. If you take the majority of the new boxes and combine them with the old one you get an awesome list. I think its a stupid missed opportunity for GW to not migrate the old boxes to online only or have them as low volume display items. Custodes get a 1500 point list with only a single shield captain built. Dark angels can kit bash 5 extra hell blasters and have a cheeky list under the vanguard detachment for the lone op on the captain. Necrons have a really hot list, just cut the nightscythe for a character of your choice. Tau have an exciting core to their army they just need 3 crisis suits to get to 1k and round out the list. Cold star with 3 crisis suits, a breacherfish, and a ghostkeel all in a 1k starter army? YES PLEASE! The GSC boxes literally work so perfectly together, buy two of each and you'll have a whole army. Is it a perfect list? No it's a great budget list in a very expensive army. One of each also makes for a great 1k list you'll have to cut something or run the rockgrinder as a truck but still cool and very fun. The best part is you can play both combat patrols before moving up to 1k to learn both sets of units. There are a few fails like Admec only reaching 600ish points but that is a game design issue the boxes give you a nice compelling infantry based list which people like for admec. The generic space marine list is also a bit wonky but dropping the captain for a gladiator lancer is a big help. And it would be unfair to judge the tyranids and guard combined lists because the guard had a start collecting and the tyranids basically did as well. I know that a lot of stores will have the boxes for a long time to come but in the current age of scalping and resellers I think discontinuing the boxes was a huge logistical mistake with all the additional boxes they now have to pay to ship the same models.

You hit the nail on the coffin, the new Combat Patrols aren't terrible once you pair them with the old ones. Hell for many people, just the old and new combat Patrols is probably all they need in this hobby

It’s not a bad box only if you calculate it based on savings… which ignore the fact that the base kits are unacceptably overpriced.

Lol both boxes is ALL the genestealer cult models (except for charters.) So it's a great box in my opinion. I brought 3 of the old boxes and have no bikes or ridge runner. So I'm interesting to get 2 of the new.

Just let the jackals keep their drive by demo ability and make them battleline. It'll be great fun, I promise! Old cult combat patrol had one unit to much in it anyway, compared to any orhrr box. The new one follow the line of other new ones: it will hold it's own against other new patrols, but will struggle against the top 10 old ones.

I've got 1 old CP, BNIB... does that mean I'm going to have 'quite a bad time'? I've already got a heap of old Purestrains (and the old Broodlord) and plan to get the new KT box with the Brood Brothers and the Broodcoven. Not sure the Battleforce is worth draining my (prospective) Agents savings for, though...

What do you think about the Battle Force for the GSC?

"it was nowhere near realistic to expect the new one to have 46% savings" - why though? there is no law forcing GW to make shitty Combat Patrols/discount boxes, yet, here we are.

Sorta feels like you took the wrong point from what he said. He's not advocating their behaviour he's extrapolating it. The GSC box was already high on savings when it was released, since then the costs have gone up and the savings have gone down across the board. He's not saying its unrealistic in as in GW cannot do that, he's saying that its unrealistic in that GW is showing across the entire range that it WONT do that.

Ich bin ja mal gespannt ob GW und Hachette das Combat Patrol Magazin, wie in der Testphase aufgezeigt, durch ziehen. Also mit den alten CPs oder ob die den D!ck Move bringen und die ganzen Downgrades da rein packen - bei Imperium & Stormbringer waren es ja jeweils nur kleine Änderungen von der Testphase zum endgültigen Release und dann noch die inhaltlich schon geile Verlängerung auf 90 Ausgaben bei Imperium. Werden es die alten CPs und es kommt auch nach DE, wäre ich ja nur begeistert aber im Moment bin ich absolut skeptisch, bei den ganzen Downgrades.

It's really headscratching, even in this post-codex creep world, to launch a new army codex and models while simultaneously slamming the brakes on the hype around collection-friendliness. It's like if the Knight codex was about to launch and Armigers suddenly went to 1/box.

While it is true that the old box was amazing, the points "value" goes down with the 2 and 3rd magus, sure you could kitbash them, but you could say that about anything, oh look my 50th intercessor is now a captain yey!. same with the truck 3 trucks was not "meta". The fact that even with the "best" box no one plays GSC (Unless broken) Maybe with the codex and the new box GW wants to move away from blobs of cultists and see if people want to zoom around with vehicles instead (lets be real GSC sales must be really low, (as soon as the 10th launch GSC crazy was over they were on ebay the day after the announcement with titles like "full 2k tournament ready army!") plus necromunda players will enjoy the new box.

Personally I have very mixed feelings about it all. On one hand I understand that they are trying to make combat patrols which are all a bit more balanced versus one another. On the other hand though it really feels as if they took revamping combat patrols as a way to give their customers less for the same amount of money (well more money even keeping the upcoming price increase in mind) If you couple that with releasing FOMO army boxes in a way too low number, it paints a pretty bleak picture. That being said, I do think the new GSC combat patrol, in a vacuum, looks pretty fun. You get a combination of infantry and light vehicles and it might be good to play it in combat patrol. I just hoped they would do the same for all armies but... I am mainly collecting sisters of battle atm and the previewed CP for them looks outright boring to me. Will see tomorrow what your take on that box is. :)
