    Character creation in this game is like playing a game of Takeshi’s Castle. There may be one who will rise on top, or there can be no winners at all

    Grant having his cutpurse immediately rob the quest giver gives very strong early RPG vibes. I'm sure we ran plenty of games in our teenage years that never got out of the initial tavern setting.

    Most frustrating thing about the system is convincing people to try it. Tempering expectations is important. For as much as the have in common DCC and 5e provide significantly different experiences. I always felt terrible killing a PC due to bad dice rolls in 5e, less than five deaths over a few years. I've killed more DCC characters by orders of magnitude, never carries the same sting. It can take some players longer to buy into the idea of their random characters as opposed to low level heroic fantasy characters.

    I kinda wish he'd just said that. I mean, I love Skid - he's one of my favorites on the channel, and I don't believe in Astrology any more than Skid does. But he definitely could have been less of an asshole about it. Yeah, I get it, he thinks Astrology is stupid. Way to fail at reading the room and bringing the tone down to an awkward silence. I didn't come out of this thinking Astrology was any sillier than I already do. I did come out of this with a bit less respect for Skid, unfortunately, as his attitude was just needlessly nasty to something the other players were having fun with.

    I'm with Skid on astrology. It's a fun toy to play with, but it's based on stargazing from before we had telescopes. I know I'm an Aquarius with a Scorpio rising and my moon is in Libra, but I still have to pay the same price every morning for coffee at Starbucks. At STAR bucks! Based loosely off the Lyrae constellation! The siren! The mermaid with two tails in their branding! The lyre's strings in her long hair. And they don't use astrology to determine whether or not I get a deal in my coffee? That's because it's all bunk. Scorpio ascendants should get free coffee. I'm just saying.

    Okay, so rolls go to stats in order? I might be more of a fan if you can move the rolls to desired abilities to support character concept. Also, I know in the real medieval days, and even these modern days, often folks get pushed into whatever jobs they can get, regardless of desire and/or strengths and weaknesses, but the characters are 100% randomized, without even one of them having a career that fits their strengths and weaknesses, ability-wise. (For example, a ditch-digger with no stamina would not be very successful at ditch digging and may even pass out constantly when exerting themselves in extreme weather conditions, a cutpurse with no agility?, etc.) I guess since many of these characters are slated to not survive, not much time spent in customization may be necessary. I guess the idea is that all but four of the characters are supposed to die, leaving the four survivors to advance to first level adventurer classes and be further customized? On the bright side, I love the actors, the DM and the artwork!

  • @manchasdos

    @manchasdos

    2 жыл бұрын

    The idea of the game is to let the randomness of the dice drive your character concepts. If you're dead set on something in particular than this system really isn't for you or your style. The low stamina ditch-digger might have a sickly frame from too many days digging in the hot sun. Maybe the average life expectancy for his occupation is very low (not unlike coal miners in some places today) so he figures why not take a shot on adventuring? A cutpurse with no agility may have been the guy in his gang whose job was to distract or con the mark, or maybe drive the "get-away horse". The idea is to feed your creativity off of the dice rolls and have fun with the randomness. And you're also right that through most of history people just did what their parents did, regardless of their natural abilities. So in a way this is "accurate" for whatever that's worth.

  • @bobbycrosby9765

    @bobbycrosby9765

    Жыл бұрын

    Part of the philosophy is also to counter min-max via randomness. And if you want to justify it, even in modern life, most people are just average, even if they're doing something professionally. You might love something you're "naturally" bad at and pursue a career in it.

  • @alexandersvideopicks8735

    @alexandersvideopicks8735

    Жыл бұрын

    @@bobbycrosby9765 I agree, partially. While I abhor min-maxing or "gaming the game" in RPGs to start with, much more in favor of a good story. That said, even a "challenged group" if played well can succeed and have fun, if the DM allows. For example, you could have a player play a super-young character, or a character disabled in some way, well-played, with great personalities. The reality is, however, that, per 1st Edition, adventures are supposed to "exceptional" among others of their race. While we like to pretend "anyone could do anything", can anyone be a nuclear physicist? Can anyone be the NFL's most valuable player? Can anyone be on Seal Team 6? Could anyone be a grand concert pianist? Could anyone have been a great knight (noble birth aside)? No, those things were achieved through dedication and hard work, but also through exceptional physical ability, talent, and intelligence. A group of truely "average people" really have no business in the Underdark or the Ancient Red Dragon's lair, or even infiltrating the local bandit or goblin camp. Call of Cthulu, the original game plays like that and most everyone is killed or goes insane. A newer, more playable version, allows you to start off with slightly more exceptional characters with a lot better chance of at least winning a bar fight, if still to weak to challenge a Great Old One.

    I know you don't tier the GCN players/GMs, but it's safe to say that David Winters is 5th or 6th at the best. I bring this up to say that at 5th or 6th tier he is INFINITELY better than most other GMs on other podcasts (no offense). Winters is fantastic, and if he's your "low guy", then GCN can only be the most-watched podcast in the near or recent future. Well done!
