Ford has sold more than 1.3 million Focuses since the original arrived in 1998, So there is an awful lot resting on the shoulders of this new version. To put it under even more pressure we are going to see how it compares to its main rivals, the Vauxhall Astra and the VW Golf.

I don't agree with the "dramatic" exterior on the focus, i love the new look on the new focus, it was the selling point for me. What he didn't mention was what was under the bonnet, the focus would win that part hands down. It does FAR more MPG, it's good for the economy and it has a tonne of features that saves you fuel, for example when you are idle in traffic, the car shuts itself down until you are ready to take off again, love this feature!
The Golf has it's name, that's all. VW is seen as a quality brand in Europe, in the US they're not regarded as anything at all, pure brand perception.

That's a very good new Focus, I just was surprised by the bad quality of the internal finishes, but IMO its not so important at all, but I'm crazy for this Astra, it's just pretty good looking. The most awesome design!
i've even recognized the bushes along the road!they are the same as in previous videos
Astra is best looking by far with it's eagle shapes inside and out. The Astras interior is miles better than both as well with plenty of chrome. Have test driven all 3. This man is a liar.
No, i am talking about engine and wind noise mostly but yeah, i guess you're right. My new 1.0 ecoboost Focus is so quiet that you don't notice it is running when the engine is at idle.
Depending what tyres are on it maybe, but a lot of dealers seem to change the factory fitted tyres for some strange reason.
astra is the best car here wtf is he talking about?!?the feeling when you drive and sit in an astra is much beter then focus and everything you touch is sooo nice.this astra is very stable at higher speeds as well and in the real world most economical

the interior in the astra is sooooooooooo much nicer, aswell.
hello hows the 1.0 ecoboost focus in terms of performance is it as good as a 1.6tdi golf in performance and hows the fuel consumption wen light footed and heavy footed
I really like the look of the new Focus... In person it looks so sleek!
@hercegovac00 Thats true but the lights are still higher than other cars, almost beside the windows.

Hello, if you are doin short journeys, go for the 1.0 EcoBoost (if you still haven't decided). Since then, the 1.6 TDCI has been availabe on the Focus, and gets 83.1mpg, with 88g/km CO2. I'd go for the diesel if I were you, especially if you drive it for more than half an hour or so on your way to places.
You say the 3rd gen has EHPAS for the first time - it doesn't. The Mk2 had EHPAS also.
I ve learnt to drive in a first generation focus. It was a nice car however i didnt like its appearance that much. And this new one is the best driving car according to reviews, however im kinda reluctant about its aesthetics. What other cars did u consider before going for the ford + what motor did u pick? :)
My focus gets delivered next week I'm getting the 1.6 tdci zetec.any word on reliability

How did the reliability turn out for you?
got my focus today - IT'S AWESOME!!!
The Vauxhall has the stop/start gizmo its called ecoflex so have many other makes, its no big deal more of a nuisance really, the Vauxhall has also other gizmos like Hill assist which is really handy
Focus looks so much better with the body kits on. In zetec s form
In the US the car dealerships are having a hard time keeping the Focus in stock. I just ordered one and I have to wait two months to get it and I only live 10 miles from the plant that produces the Focus.
From base model point of view, I would definitely go with the Focus. However, as you climb the food chain, the Golf becomes my pick.
Not to nit-pick. But the Focus has a Cargo Volume of 674 liters versus the Golf's 413 liters. In case there some differences between the NA and UK models.
Great review by the way this guy should be on tv
Are you sure it was a Titanium, someone posted from the U.S saying you cant get the Titanium in the USA
Digital radio? Sold
@lemonadeez o rly? quality and refinement are not tangible qualities? if you say so..
@TheMr1981noname no same class - thats considered premium hatchback
I got it for almost 4 months now, and it's still the best car i ever drove!
The reviewer's height varies depending on what car he is reviewing. I've seen a couple of videos and he says he's 5"9, then 5"10 now 5"11. he'll be 6"0 soon. LOL

why is Vauxhall and not opel?:)
I cannot recommend the Focus 1.0 Ecoboost enough. It has won engine of the year award this year. When I drive it it has more than plenty of power and puts a smile on my face every time you drive it, right from the thrum sound of the 3 cylinder engine, to the fuel efficiency and how smooth and quiet it is. If heavy footed, it will manage about 35-40 mpg but I average about 50mpg. Both variants have low CO2. I would only recommend it if you do short journeys though. Otherwise, go for the diesel.
Why is he saying that it's a better car than the astra ?!
I drove a focus one day and it felt like a spaceship
Well 35-40 mpg while heavy footed seems impressive for me since its a petrol, just because in my country India petrol and diesel car price margin is very high say around 200 pounds so i belive by putn 2000 pounds of extra petrol will do the job and from ma experince diesel service costs are 2 higher
mazda 3 or the focus?
My Ford Touch is only available on the U.S Focus. :)
Astra looks the best
o q signinifica plain???
No one's in one level as Civic: for the looks, space (boot especially), quality and VTEC engines!
Good luck you must have got a good one
Test drove one of the new ford focus's here in aus yesterday and I have to say it's woeful, I only wish we got euro imports, not rubbish made in Thailand.
I own a Focus Zetec S and i must say i love it, i prefer VW's to ford in general though but without being bias i must say the ford is superb in every single way. The reviewer isn't lying when he said the ford is firm at low speed, it's very firm. I like this at high speed because it handles amazing. The golf however at low speed goes over bumps like a bentley. When it comes to buying and keeping, i would say get the golf if you can afford it. the ford loses too much value for an owner
@PS3DUDE290 Focus, the equipment you get as standard is unbeatable
3 great cars!
I have it all in my Astra... Cant believe these tests... LoL
I do not know which is the best but the vauxhall is the most beautiful.
@lgugue test drive all three, the focus is the most fun and it puts a smile on your face every time you drive it :)
@lemonadeez good point and well said
This guy is the best !
In Bulgaria there's a saying "The best Ford is the sold one." And here we drive the cars way after their warranty expires and after 10 years the build quality is what matters. And I think VW are the best when talking about quality.
All three cars have their good points but at the end of the day you have to decide which one you want to live with and for me the Astra's looks do it for me over the golfs slightly plain looks and the Fords busy angles.
thanks:)
1.6 tdci is good but i felt the 1.6 tdci very sluggish it has almost no torq below 2000 rpm and in city driving in bumper to bumper traffic low end torq is the most wanted atribute of an engine in ma experience otherwise i ll get end up revving the engine at slopes inclines traffic signals etc 2 keep the car moving and thats a stress and 4 that reason the 1.6 TDI of VW is a gem, beautiful low end torq but i dont like golfs desin and features and lite steerin, i ll go with 1.0 ecoboost fiesta125ps
nice video
did you notes all vw looks the same .
I have driven 2 different Golfs and one Golf plus for a company car, one with a 1.6 DSG, and one with a 2.0 manual. Firstly, I must say how excellent they are to drive, they are great all round cars with smooth, punchy acceleration. owever, the interior trim, as with the 5 Passats I have driven (even on top spec models) is dour, and always breaks or falls apart. Add this to the fact an Astra or Focus is cheaper and plusher, along with being more stylish, then the Golf is a clearly over rated.
"Drive ability" isn't tangible as well. It depends if you want a car that gives you some "excitement" in twisty roads or not. Because the Golf drives very well, not as sharp.
Vauxhall is an old British car manufacturer from 1903 that was bought by GM in 1925. It's been GM's face in the UK since then. They have shared models with Opel since the 1980's. Vauxhall and Ford produce the most popular cars in the UK. Vauxhall is a trusted and well established brand, rebranding it Opel could well be business disaster.
Astra is the winner then the Focus i say Golf has had its time its the name holding it high not saying its a bad car its just over rated thanks to its history
@Superlasek deberías verlo de cerca. El morro es precioso, le falla el culo, al que hay que acostumbrarse. Pero en blanco es realmente bonito.
Nah sorry Matt Vauxhall Astra any day 😍
Quality refinement in a ford are you having a laugh, have a look in the vauxhall and see the difference
FOCUS!
Nice :) VTEC... But again... I'd rather take Octavia, not Jetta cos: looks, get more for money and easier access to the boot cos it's hatch! BTW I dont care about cheap plastics, I like design (in & out) and believe on reliability! Dont love the new model, but I cant ignore THAT space, so still would choose :)
You now can get the Titanium Focus in the U.S.A.
Brandon Friesen I disagree with your comment entirely. I have a 61 plate Golf and a 14 plate focus - both 2.0tdci versions - and I can safely say that when I want some fun, I get the Focus out...... not the dull, safe and steady Golf. Good car, and I wouldn't change her, but my god its boring!
@brandonfriesen5389

That's fine if you disagree with my comment. Boring-ness is subjective. I found the mk7 golf 1.4 tsi to be great fun. The 1.6 focus was good but not Golf good. I would never own a Focus. Reliability isn't that great and it's not nearly the practical car it should be. Too small and cramped up front.
@9FORDIE9

Brandon Friesen now that's interesting - i find the Golf a bit too small in the cabin. I had a 53 plate focus that accrued 190k miles and never once went wrong. It's luck of the draw I guess. What are you driving currently?

thats because its a ford chassis and running gear
driving ability is the only thing that mattteeerssss
I will go with Astra-Focus then Golf
just got the golf only 23,000
I like the VW golf. For the fact that holds value when its time to sell. But i know fords drive fantastic. I have owned many vauxhall. And many ford and always get shafted when time to sell. But as a ST driver i want the perfect combo. style. And the resale value. For once im temped to be boring and have a Golf TDI.LOok unimpressive but a capable car. And hold money. Good for me. TdI GT good enough.
Test the new Astra 2.0 cdti and you will want one
the new i30 2012 is the most beautifull
It's a good thing :)
I recently drove a ford focus and to be honest i was not impressed, the ride was firm and bumpy , the fuel economy is poor, in my opinion the astra is betted value for money with a comfortable ride
focus
I will still be under warranty surly
@derbigpr500 so we're listening u mr.crystal cleary guy..
For the interior wise, ford focus look more premium with soft touch material(for hi spec eg: s+), golf interior quite boring n conservative... Maybe golf win for the performance
Focus have this something.
I believe the Golf handles better. I've seen a slalom comparison between these and the Golf was faster.
Astraaaaa Ftw!!!!
Can't understand why journalists praise the golf interior. Yes its nicely put together but so are most euro hatches and what's more its so dull. To me the golf is like a bosch washing machine, very good at its job but you don't fall in love with your washing machine. I'd take either of the other two over the golf anyday.
Take the badge off the VW and it would be in 3rd place. The inside might be good quality but its 5 years out of date at least. ok from the front but like a shed from the side. The resale value may be high but its not like its any more reliable than the others. If you needlessly change your car every 2 years you will win on the golf but if I had that much money I would go for something more interesting and keep it longer. As for the Astra the 1.4T does the biz on corners if you now how to drive!
Mazda 3 has a focus chassis, and running gear as far as I know, ford own mazda
False, the Ford Focus has more standard equipment on each trim level than any other car in it's class.
hiya just to let u know that I like the ford focus better
ill always buy vauxhall, great car, and is it just me or is the ford identical to the kia cee'd estate xD
Focus
@lemonadeez hahahahaha you are funny. Quality an refinement are tangible more or less, desirability isn't. In terms of driving ability the focus is not better the guy said is only a litter more conformable at higher speeds but the golf is overall more comfortable. Let me ask you this and think hard: drive ability is a tangible quality???
About the only bloke I’ve seen, that said the Focus is better than the Astra! (I must live a sheltered life then, I guess!)
So the Ford is the most engaging to drive, the Vauxhall is the best looking and the VW is the most well-rounded. I think there's no winner here because all three are amongst the top 5 best sellers in the UK.
If anything, it has more soft touch than the Golf. Also, the Golf's interior is quite bland looking, even on the new model, the entire car looks dull. At least the Focus has design and character put into it. I love my 1.0 EcoBoost Focus, drives great, too. MPG is also best in class with the Focus, 83.1mpg with the 88g/km 1.6 TDCI, and a generous 115bhp. I could go on about how the Focus is best selling, safest and best value for money, but I'd be here all day.
I think Focus is not ugly for me:) I think its pretty handsome but not the best looking.
American engineering FTW.
It is actually the quietest car in its class. And the Golf uses much cheaper and more breakable parts.
i'd go astra! jealous down people.
@jb7254 LOL. You must be trolling.
the focus is my winner.
