Since its debut in 1998, the Ford Focus has been a hit with UK buyers; the family hatch offers a perfect blend of affordability, practicality and sportiness in a stylish package. The latest iteration builds on this formula with the latest technology and a host of efficient powertrains. However, with the rise in popularity of SUVs, we seem to have forgotten what was once one of the best-selling cars in Britain. Is the Focus still the hatchback heavyweight it once was? Sara Damergi finds out

Yeah regardless of its age it's definitely the best handling car in its class without a doubt
A great review Sara. Following a loan MK1 Focus when my beloved Fiesta was in for a service the handling and driving experience stood out like nothing else that I'd either driven before or even been a passenger in. Needless to say I was tempted enough to buy one. An incredible car that MK 1. Future versions seemed to loose that edge and I moved on to other cars over the years. To hear that Ford appears to be regaining its err focus on driving experience and going full circle as you mention is great to hear.

It’s still a solid choice if you want a practical and fairly priced car that is also quite fun to drive. Too bad that you can only choose from 1.0L engines as petrol options (excluding the 2.3 ST model): a 1.5/1.6 would fit more properly in a car with a good chassis like this one.

That tiny 3 cylinder motor is a deal breaker for me, bad enough in Fiesta let alone Focus.
@mikerelvas
Жыл бұрын
@@ingopaul67 surely you wouldn't expect a 1.0L 3 cylinder to blow your socks on fire, but it's not dreadful either - the 125 and 155 PS versions are very adequate and, out of all the 1.0L 3 cylinders I've driven, the EcoBoost seems to be the most responsive and nippy out of the bunch. Having that said, it's a shame Ford ditched the 1.5 EcoBoost 3 cylinder on the Focus Mk4. Having that engine coupled with the mild-hybrid system would make it a very interesting option, especially the 182 PS version.
@RadimTylecek

I've got the 1.0L/155k mild hybrid version and it's powerful enough across the rpm range. You wouldn't notice it's just 3 cyl, expect when you rev it up enough to hear the difference.

great review but hope it more reliable than my 2020 ford focus 1 litre turbo ecoboost, mine been in 9 times for same issue lack of power when excellerating and a missfire but my dealership says nothing wrong as no lights on dash but when they connect it to there computer it has fault codes they dealete and i get car back but same issues. hope they have ironed all issues out before they launched this facelift version. dont get me wrong still love the focus but has put me off getting another.

Unless you can't live without heated seats, wireless charging and a rear view camera, the entry 1.0 125 manual Active SW option, which I drive for the past 5 months costing just shy £26k is a more than adequate choice: not the fattest but drives extremely well, very spacious and practical (e.g.boot's wet zone), good connectivity features, most of the safety features you'll ever need come as standard, also the extra driving modes are useful, slippery came handy recently under torrential rain in Scotland. And I actually like the "dull" minimal interior, and the big screen looks way better when you drive the thing than in photos, although I miss the physical buttons for air con. Plus averaging 49mpg mainly on short trips. So, although the Focus is not as fashionable as many SUVs is a much better car than most overall and I really think it's a shame it'll be discontinued (like the Cmax previously), just add a freaking battery instead of making yet another SUV...

Clear and concise review. I really like the interior too including the high up on dash touch screen. From experience of driving current Fords as hire cars, their touch screens are pretty decent and vastly better than the ones on Hondas and Toyotas. All that aside though, the Focus, and Fiesta, are now the only Ford's I'd have, although I'd give this active model a clear miss too. I used to be a huge Ford fan, but they have become obsessed with crossovers/SUVs. As such, they now only make 2 cars I like.
Is the 48 mpg by the in car computer? As my Ford mpg readout can be 5 mpg over what it is really doing. So 48 might only be 43... Good review all the same.

The rotary dial currently is only available on the 1.5 EcoBlue and 2.3 EcoBoost engine variants, as those have kept the same torque converter transmission. The 1.0 EcoBoosts now have the big gear lever because they no longer use the 8-speed torque converter, instead it now has a new 7-speed PowerShift DCT.
Ford is great at making cars that do Exactly what you want and expect
It might not be luxurious as a Volvo V60 or A6 avant, but Ford engines gives you enough pleasure to ride with.

Sometimes new tech is just bad; please bring back physical climate controls (like many have done by now)...and take out that stupid keyless entry, the only 'advantage' it has is gifting your car to thieves.
I used to swear by Ford. Still own my MK2 Focus for now. But none of their current offerings will keep me with them when I replace it. The new Focus has to be the worst looking mid-size hatchback in anything but ST-Line form, but even that is ruined by the awful interior! Probably be the new Astra, Golf or A3 for me next, and I swore I’d never buy VAG years ago!
