Bittersweet really. I don’t know how to really think of it either. I pray God forgives him for taking his own life but a part of me feels happy for him that he went out the way he wanted… I don’t know, such a strange story and guy. I bet he was someone you would have a beer with.

@@Watefak I know it’s a bit annoying calling this poor guy a hero or a legend but I think the context of those statements represent something else. I truly don’t think they really think he is a hero or a legend it’s just a lazy figure of speech.

He still deserves full credit for being the only person, who on their first flight without any experience before, chose a large passenger plane, did a looping in it, which is a feat the most experienced pilot wouldn't dare to do, didn't loose control over it and perfectly hit the spot where he wanted to crash. He has got to be the best Pilot I have ever seen.

@@resksmith5862 his point was to crash it, but safely to not harm anyone directly. So from his perspective he landed it perfectly. Besides he didn't want to put landing aid on, so he could crash it. He knew what he was doing. He deserves to be remembered as a pilot legend.

As a pilot, he spoke more than anyone else in the entire aviation industry. Ground handlers have it rough, pilots have bad days, flight attendants work when feeling sick but no one can say a damn thing.

the fact that he didn't want anyone else to die in this shows really who he was.

Not gonna lie, I find it really impressive that this guy was able to smoothly take off without any flying experience.

You should watch the documentary. He did much more than just a smooth take off. Pushed the limits on that plane. He told atc he was going to do a circle flip....and he did it. Now that's impressive!

Thats not courage. It takes courage to see life through. Courage is pushing forward even with all odds against you. It takes courage to get up each day and work hard to be a productive member of society. Courage is never quitting no matter what comes your way in life. Courage is standing up for what is right regardless of adversity set before you. Suicide is not courage. Causing pain to your loved ones that they will carry for the rest of their lives is selfishness not courage. It's sad that this young man put himself in a situation that he knew would end in his death. I pray for his loved ones and wish he could have chose a different path in life. He clearly would have made an awesome pilot.

It is a shame that some people feel the need to commit suicide....one of my dearest friends racked back the slide on his 1911 and ate a bullet .....and none of us ever saw it coming.... He left no clues or any type of red flags in any one he talked to .....he just sat down in his kitchen and went away and I really wished that he would have said something about his demons....this kind of thing is beyond devastating to those they leave behind so any one Out there considering this please please seek help.

Honest to god, I pray for the family, friends and close ones who were a part of his life. Im sorry for your loss.

As a Ramp Supervisor for an airline with a private pilot license & over 400hrs of flight time I have to say the most impressive thing about this whole situation was how he was able to unhook the towbar which usually takes 2 people on each side of the nose landing gear to detach the towbar in sync and he did it with the breaks released on the aircraft and jumped back in. Idk what he would’ve done had the towbar not detached 😭😭😭

First offender... Non-violent offense with no damages or injuries and no passenger. Honestly they would make him do 3 months of a 2 year sentence out on good behavior and he'd be on a very long probation mandatory therapy checkins. Not a big deal at all. A really good attorney might have even gotten him less time than that but he would be with a PD from the sound of his situation. He is an illustration of how we collectively turn a blind eye to people like him and fully expect them to check out just not in such a glorious fashion. We expect white males like him to OD quietly at home on fentanyl.

Even with these things, some people will be depressed. Even without, some people will be happy. I wish he received help but he didn't - or it didn't work for him.

Seems like a chill guy, makes you cherish everybody in your circle because you don't know who's struggling because he/she will never tell. Treating everyone better is the only way to avoid these.

Dude had some natural flying skills and must have been rather intelligent. His only flying lessons were from playing video games yet he took off in a mid size passenger plane an did loops and barrel rolls in it. RIP Sky King.

@@lifeisshort..1685 My husband, up until 4 months ago made a hefty salary. His contract ended resulting in us having to move across country He took a much lower paying job with a company (coincidentally, building aircrafts) he's been wanting to work for for years. Before the move we lived in a luxury apartment with all the amenities close to everything in our city. Now we live in a double wide that needs lots of work because buying was cheaper than renting (we prefer to rent, less responsibility. Im aware that you throw away money renting, but we didnt care) I was really upset when we moved. It's not the life I have been accustomed to for the past 7 years. I really had to dig deep and realize so many ppl would be grateful for the things I have now and if I let it get to me, I was going to continue to be miserable. I didn't want that because we can die any day without notice. Moral of the story, I went from having tons of money to throw away, to living from paycheck to paycheck and I can still live happily as long as I humble myself and allow it to happen ❤

@@RC-cc1xl You just changed my entire thinking, I've been living off from paycheck to paycheck and feeling miserable about it that I never get a salary raise and felt more miserbale when I found out my co-worker and same position gets paid thrice of what I get. I've tried suicide didn't work either but after reading this I now know what I need more in life... Wow.. so sad.. just a broken guy 😔😔 this world needs real love not the love people proclaim.

What's crazy is when I was younger and way more depressed I really thought about doing something just like this. I had enough flight experience and access to aircraft as an aircraft detailer to do it too. I never did it because I told myself I'd eventually meet someone who'd make it all worth it. I have, and I've also come close to losing them. I hope everyone finds someone who loves them enough to help. This life is really tough. It's even worse alone.

Crazy how somebody could seem so normal and just snap and do something as wild as that.

I remebered following this story when it happened, love you sky king I’ll never forget you

So a lot of things people don’t know, I used to work a Horizon air as an aircraft mechanic and I know the guy who last spoke to Richard right before he did this. First Richard was always asking certain mechanics how to turn on the aircraft not knowing his intentions (start the engines, take off, gear up, etc) most guys just thought he was some airplane nerd or something. Second, aircraft 449QX was brand new and had literally just gotten some issues fixed that day so we were kind mad he didn’t take one of the older Q400s that were getting close to retirement and always breaking down lol

Terribly sad. Guy was depressed and felt like he had no other choice. At least he didn't hurt anyone else. My condolences to his friends and family.

What a sad story. He felt like taking his life was the only way to stop his hurting. I wish someone could’ve helped him before he got to that point. I hope he felt pure joy while flying the plane. Thankful for the fact that he purposely crashed on an empty island rather than hurting innocent people.

My Brother worked with him at Horizon in SeaTac. My brother said he was a really good person. RIP fella 🫡

This is really sad. He was clearly hurting and wanted to end his life, but he didn’t want to hurt anyone else. I wish he had someone to talk to, maybe a friend could have done him good. Seemed like a kind man, RIP.

His name was Richard Russell. He was 29 years old. His last words according to a report He said :”I got a lot of people that care about me. It’s going to disappoint them to hear I did this”.

Yeah, no burden on the airline/insurance co. to lose a multi-million dollar plane; no burden on taxpayers to pay for fighter jets to scramble to ensure that this selfish idiot doesn't plow into a building; no burden on firefighters to put out the blaze or emergency response teams; no burden on crash investigators, no burden on his family who have to plan a funeral and deal with possible lawsuits/damage claims, etc..

The fact that he managed to fly it for so long after never flying before is honestly pretty impressive

RIP Sky King. I was just watching a documentary on him yesterday. I’ve always thought about him occasionally since this happened. I’m just sad he’s dead. Dude seemed like such a chill guy, make everyone laugh, but had his own internal issues.
