NEW Favorite Rimless Aquarium Lid
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
An easy rimless aquarium lid that uses only two products to set up. I tried this after being frustrated with how fast net lids would get dirty. So far I am loving it so I wanted to show others how simple it is to set up and then talk through the pros/cons.

You can also buy green house panels and cut them yourself to fit. Real easy and cheaper . Lots of videos on them .
I got a glass picture frame from Michael’s and a glass cutter off of Amazon and made a perfect fit lid for my tank. This also looks good too but I probably spend about $30 total for my build.
I have a lid like this as well, actually a few of them. I used Lexan brand polycarb as it is supposed to be less prone to water absorption and bending than regular acrylic. Lexan is 3x the price of acrylic. Acrylic itself is usually 20-30% more expensive than glass. I went with the acrylic b/c it was available at Home Depot and I don't have the tools or expertise to cut glass. I have since replaced my acrylic lids with glass. My local ACE hardware was able to cut sheets of window glass to desired size. Glass is cheaper and better than acrylic/Lexan in so many ways as a tank cover.
While DYI solution was fine ~1:45 seconds into it. I will just say the new method looks so much better.
Not cool that more companies don’t offer better lid solutions for a rimless tank. Your lids looks great!

Thank you! And I agree with that. If a company makes a rimless tank it would be great if they sold a lid of the exact size

I got a waterbox rimless 16 tank. Thanks for this video. I haven’t gotten it yet waiting so I can measure it accurately.

I did the same thing on my 70 gallon sump tank. I wanted to reduce water evaporation. I found a place that sold acrylic sheets. Had it cut to size. Very happy with the results. My sump happens to be rimless by the way.
I had set in my mind to cut my lid long ways. I never considered cutting it in the middle from front to back like yours. I'm going to do it like that on my polycarbinate lids.
I siliconed small rectangle squares in the corners works good
It might be nice to get handles for the tops. You would have a decent amount of options from adhesive tapes to drilling a small hole and screwing on a cabinet handle. ps. acryllic can crack so only drill polycarbonate. ps. i believe acryllic will absorb moisture overtime. Its best to use green house materials like polycarbonate from what ive been told.
Cool info!

Hi, I love this solution. How do you prevent condensation? I think if you put an I bar on the bottom of the cover going from front to back (glue it on), that might prevent the bending. Thanks for posting this.
I was thinking of a solution like this. But I'm actually trying to make a high tech heavily planted tank. And aquarium LED lights are not cheap, so I'd rather not have their light cut down by the lids like this. I was thinking of making a bigger cover/hood that would enclose both the aquarium top and the lights. That way I still have the aquarium covered but not obstructing the lights.
Thinking of making my own glass lid for my modified Fluval flex tanks,but I’d prefer a smaller hinged portion to be able to open at the front. I tried plexiglass(1/8 thickness)and it warped horribly. I’m thinking glass would work bettter. Clear polycarbonate sheets where I live are insanely expensive.

Yeah I did 1/4 inch and it still warps. Although I just flip it each week so it warps back in the other direction and that works great. I bet 1/8 warps too much as you said. If I got another lid like this I'd probably go even thicker than 1/4
My issue is I have a few things in the tank hanging I yo the tank and it’s very expensive to cut all the spaces
Would love to know where you got the high rise light mounts?My nicrew sits too close to my lid I’d prefer it higher above the tanks…

They came with the light (Current USA Serene Sun). I see some on Etsy that would do the same. If you search "nicrew light riser" on there you'll see them. Otherwise I don't think nicrew sells ones like I have so buying a different brand might not fit right.
Hey! We recently got a UNS 75s tank, unfortunately they don’t do lids for this model so your method was the closest we could get to the OG UNS lids. Have a quick question, Looks like it’s been about 9months since you posted this video, could you share an update on how is it doing now? How well is it holding up? Anything to know that you came across using this method for lids overtime?

Hi there, good questions! Overall it is holding up great. I'm still using the same plexiglass and clips. The one thing to note that I did not realize when making this video is that after about a week the plexiglass starts to bend from the condensation weighing it down. So each week I just turn them to the other side. By the end of the week they are bending back the other direction. But I have not seen them bend past a certain point and I've had no issues other than the bending. If I did anything different I would have gotten slightly thicker plexiglass. Besides that I would definitely do this again for future rimless tanks that need a lid. Let me know if you have any other questions I missed

why not twin wall poly-carbonate sheeting its a lot lighter and insulated ?

I'll look into it the next time I need a lid for a tank. The site I ordered from had two options and I went with the one that sounded more ideal for an aquarium. You're probably right that there are better options
What is your tank measurements ?

@@TheAquaticCoder sir what is the glass thickness ?
@TheAquaticCoder
8 ай бұрын
@@gogreen666 12 mm is the glass thickness on this tank. I bought two plexiglass lids to split the tank. For a tank this long I think that is the safer decision rather than one lid as it'll warp too much at that length I think
Your fish tank is the wrong way round?
Those lids will eventually warp.
@TheAquaticCoder

Each week when I do water changes I turn them to the other side. So they just bend back. I see no problem with doing this longterm but we'll see. I agree though, you definitely can't just keep them on one side and never turn them.
