I truly like the game but they really need to do something with peacemaker. Johnny maybe better buy no one wants to fight peacemaker throwing out eagly, gin shots, darts and turning on forcefield every 3 seconds. They need to buff tyne lower tier characters and cameos and delete peacemaker and the game will be fine.

In 2024, I’m far more excited about the 30th anniversary of both Killer Instinct and Primal Rage, than anything that NRS is currently doing.

Let this sink in guys you see peacemaker more than scorpion and Sub-zero in they’re own game that’s tells you everything you need to know the game sucks bad 👉🏾👎🏽👎🏽👎🏽👎🏽

This tournament was the most cringe thing i ever watched. A Mortal Kombat tournament with assists and superheroes. I hope they feel ashamed and embarrassed for ruining what this game could have been.

Stiff and janky animations run the mk meta.

The meta is so bad. The poke, micro duck, barely negative string into D1 or not... Its just so rudimentary and boring. I am glad you are focusing on this because since MK11, this meta has been so bad and the lack of fast mids has killed this game. Add that on top of NRS fumbling the ball constantly and lack of care is just maddening.

Boring, goofy GUEST character. Guest characters in general 😵‍💫 At least Jason felt like an MK character a bit cos he’s a classic horror movie character. OOPS: I mean, ‘klassic’ 😝

Ed has no clue and never did after MK9. While Paulo controls all the balancing and meta decisions who also has to convince Ed to approve it/go with it. Lots of outsourcing especially in Animation and QA department. Also 99% of the studio does not play the game except to check their work and QA to bug report the game.

I would say he had no clue even during MK9 since that’s when the story itself got even worse with their timeline bs and constant retcons. Nobody knew MK as well as John Tobias did, and I’d argue that the franchise began to slowly get worse and worse ever since it’s true creator left Midway during the production of Special Forces. Ed Boon has proven far too many times that he clearly doesn’t understand MK and it painfully shows.

@@EpicJasonX9000 The other problem with NRS is its full of dinosaurs. The vast majority of the NRS crew are the original MK team that survived the Midway closures. They only have 1 "famous" former pro player as a Lead QA now, but he was way more into the game and the meta until Paulo and the studio crushed his spirits. One of the designers is a former pro player that beat Sonic at CB during MKX days, but Paulo controls the meta and "balancing" by playing the characters in Practice mode with the frame data tool. Animation is mostly outsourced, Art is heavily outsourced especially the concept art, Kore Tech is full of dinosaurs and young leads that don't care, Gameplay Programming is full of dinosaurs and young leads that don't care. Design is full of dinosaurs. DK is a former QA guy turned Designer turned Lead, Paulo is a true dinosaur, and 3 other designers are dinosaurs, the 1 young blood designer is still an associate and not allowed to take over characters or balance. Just Paulo "Bitch Work". The whole studio doesn't play the game for passion and fun. They only play when they need to check their work or some bug report. Even their in-house QA is full of young people just trying to get their first AAA title to find work elsewhere. They don't give 2 shits about the FGC or MK meta. They're just there for the pay and the industry experience to bounce. But Chicago has only NRS as the major AAA, and the other are not as secure or famous like NRS. Iron Galaxy needs to do a KI 2 to keep NRS on its toes b/c IG during those days scoped up a lot of the younger NRS people. And High Voltage Software is a just a typical port/support house.

I think another thing that sucks about this situation we are in with MK1 is that I remember the Devs saying that this will be the LONGEST supported MK game, which I would assume will be alive/supported longer than MK11. This game hasn't even been out 1 year and its DRY AF! This is gonna be torture..... side note: This game definitely feels like a Reverted Injustice Game with MK skins and moves. The movement, normals, jumps (floaty), Neutral, etc....feels like an injustice game. Not to mention all the Super Hero's they keep adding to the game...

The game sold well, the DLC characters sold well, and Kombat pack 2, and the expansion of the story mode will sell as well. Why would they kill off the game when it's making them a ton of money? NRS will pull the plug on this game when they are nearly complete with the next game.

Killer instinct had different properties with combo enders which leg to people doing different combos. One would wall splat you. Another gave you more meter, another gave you the damage

Netherealm should be embarrassed one of the most exciting players to watch is playing such a boring character bc its the only way to compete. The HP decrease on Khameleon isnt gonna nerf HER, its gonna nerf other characters that already have lower hp and work with Khameleon. This game needs a major rework.

YT content creators that almost never criticize the game and have half a million subscribers and rely on monetization of their videos, but not all of them. You can guess whom 😝 but it’s debatable. Maybe Tom would agree with my statement.

I am very disappointed in MK1 ! I thought we would have more mechanics offensive and defensive wise. There is nothing in this game to keep you locked in. If the next game sucks like this one or is worse, it's truly over for Mortal Kombat. Three strikes your out !

Tom brady try not to complain for 1 video challenge (impossible)

I mean the poke system just looks stupid If you land a d1 you should be able to go into a quick string that ends in knockdown or special move. But nope they flinch if they mash you can jail them into your fastest button it just doesn’t link there’s no flow to it and animation wise looks jank. Like why do d1 and d3 do the same thing? Why does d4 exist to what make them stumble. It’s just awful

1:04:00 there are those like me, who wants to play stronger players and when I do I have the skill to adapt and adapt very quickly, and when I do, the pros rage on me in casuals, not even in Kombat league. Id play them all day, they are the ones with the attitude "hold that" when in cases I am unable to beat them because I only play smoke and some characters at certain skill level smoke just can't keep up with.

I learned this lesson that Tom talks about with witnessing Ninja stream SF6 on its launch to 2 million twitch streamers while Justin Wong had like 500.

Mk1 still sucks

If they made it possible to make the lows like D1 a combo starter or D4 would that help the game a little I’m curious and speed the game 0.25% more.??

Bring back short hops for the ducking meta but make them safe or barely plus depending range and startup, also a universal push block would be nice.

Project MK1 Day 1 developers meeting be like... Introducing one of our new mechanics... CAMEO, but with the K. Fckn Genius!

Game also needs a counter hit system. That changes the properties of special moves. Mileena ball roll hard knockdown but based on a counter hit or a combo that start from counter hit it launches and allows you to do things after and so on for everybody

funny when i was playing i ran into rewind and wound cowboy in ranked. beat wound a few times messaged both got no response. Even though i remember wound from old forums tym or mku. and I definitely noticed people rather insult and be salty rather than set up training partners to both get better.

So much down one gameplay in MK1 it's worse than MK11. Down 1 is the meta in MK1 and that's just unreal for a modern fighting game to be reduced to that . Clearly NRS has lost there ability to make a great game.

Can someone name the shills they're referring to and their channels. Besides trueunderdog, i haven't heard a lot of people speaking only positive about the game. Everyone has gripes about the game. These guys just continue to speak about it. While others move on.

At least one of the reasons they don’t communicate is cos they make mistakes and don’t admit it; like reverting Cyrax and then re-nerfing him and not putting it in the patch notes so even players like SonicFox don’t know what’s intentional or not 😂 I personally appreciate being told when mistakes happen so there is a good chance they’ll be fixed.

It's the whole ranking system in T8 in general and I've seen a decent amount of players that are content creators complain about it offhandedly on occasion. I don't think it's as nefarious as I think it was implied here as to why we aren't seeing it in the forefront for content channels. It falls under the whole rank match system design in general and the actual pro and top players don't deal with the issue as often so it's just naturally not as relevant to them. Which I think all they need to do for rank to fix the 1 and done is add a multiplier to the points rewarded and lost. You lose less points for playing a full set and you gain more points for a full set. Some players are begging for the deathmatch to come back in T8 rank but that'll only exasperate the issue of cherry pickers, not fix it. Plus FT2 I think is a better learning experience for tournament competitive play overall and I know I'm not the only player that thinks this. I should also point out the other elephant in the room since you guys seemed to forget, why is quick match exactly the same as rank? There is literally no reason to play quick match as of right now unless you are scared of losing points. Quick match should in the very least allow infinite rematching unlike rank mode. I remember Mike Hollow mentioning this but I don't think you guys mentioned this at all in the podcast. The entire online in T8 is a joke of a format, not only rank. Tekken Ball is like hidden in the back for the fight lounges and forgotten about for most players and can only be accessed from the fight lounge for online. Oh and I remember Tom mentioning MK still lacks an online practice mode, that reminds me T8 still doesn't have co-op practice mode for online like Tag 2 had. T8 ain't in a bad spot now but it can be so much better with some qol improvements and keeping to their promises with no more surprise additions like the Tekken shop.

The one and dones in tekken never bothered me, there will always be people like that and I personally like the choice to not have to play again. The big problem for me is the inability to keep playing if both players wish to. No infinite rematch even in quick play kills some enjoyment for me

I loved MK so much in my teen years. 9 and X was basically my entry way into fighting games. Even 11 at least gave me something to do even though nowadays I consider it trash. I never bought MK1, but played it day 1 at a friend’s house and thought it was…alright, and never really kept up with the game aside from seeing stuff about the guest fighters. I’ve been in an MK mood lately and decided to watch a few videos about MK1. Holy shit, this game looks like hot diarrhea melting in the sun. What the fuck happened? $70 for the base game, another $40 for a DLC character pack, absurd monetization for something as small as one finisher or an announcer voice, and it’s missing basic content and features that were standard in the game from 2011? Are you kidding me? No wonder people shit on MK nowadays, this is just depressing.

last thing MK11 is a faster playing game than MK1 and the kombat is better and it's more fun to watch. MK11 is not a great game but it's better than MK1 i'll fucking die on that hill.

NBA 2k21 was the last 2k I grinded on or spent some money making builds . Got tired of being robbed. Came back in on 23 but only made 2 builds and grinded them from the bottom . Didn’t even finish grinding them past 90. 2k robs you crazy on the amount it takes to upgrade your player. 200k use to get your player 82-85 overall. But when animations and gear is so expensive it takes the fun out of it

4 real man to watch the top 4 6 players in the game rn using just two Characters was just heartbreaking, was tough to watch it till the end lol

As a casual, I can 100% say I hated mk11 and mk1. I liked mk9 and loved mkx. Bring back mkx, make run one button, make block breaks 1 bar and I will be happy.

buff ideas, spread the word Havoc: He needs at least five new attack strings, he needs his legacy move that titan havoc has were he takes off his head and rolls it but its a mid, has the same affect as reptiles acid ball, and also hits mid exploding on contact. he also needs another one of his legacy moves that again titan havoc has where he bends his hole body for a low projectile and the amp of that can be a knock down allowing for combo extentions for cameos like scorpion Sub-zero: he needs his attack strings made slightly faster except for his overhead, he also needs 1 or 2 new attack string launchers, both his regular and amp iceball needs to be faster to not only be able to combo with it off of normal attack strings but in juggle combos too. He should have the ability to throw his ice clone, i also think he should have his ice burst special back with the same proporties as mkx to compliment his ice clone(but just does not send you that far away). lastly he needs some of his damage scailing off ground freeze. Scorpion: should be buffed by making his amp ground tp a launcher again and make the cancel built in to both his regular and amp tp. buff the amp hellfire move by removing the damage over time and making it function like how it does in mkx allowing him to combo after hitting it. he needs new strings some mix ups(i personally want his mkx overhead back). some moves need to be sped up Quan shi: needs his mind control move from mkx back, and make half his attack strings faster. and finally his low tentacle needs to be one bar Raiden: change raiden's b2 back to the mkx launcher but make it as slow as sub'z b2. give him back his vicinity blast move back with the same properties as mkx. Give him back his mkx amp lightning projectile back for combo extentions but have his regular fully charged move have the same proportys as the amp. he also needs to be buffed by making his amp electrocute special launch no matter how many bars he uses liu kang: for starters nerf his f4 one button pressure but give him his 113 mkx launcher back along with maybe 2 or 3 more new attack strings to make up for his pressure and to make it less braindead. make his low fireball slightly faster, change his air fireball to the mkx fireball and the amp the one we have now. give him back his mk 11 dragon parry, and finally make his fatal blow start up 2 hits but the first one restands kung lao: nerf tf out of his wake up special by making it unsafe af on block. give him back his mkx or 9 spin back but have it have work the same as mk11 so he can use it more than two times in a combo. swap his dive kick now for a mix between his mkx or 9 dive kick. he needs his mkx tp, and his low hat back, but nerf his mix up buttion's he has now by making the overhead follow up slightly slower. give him his mk11 21212 attack string and his mkx 44 launcher attack string back. and also he needs his hat spin. Nitara: buff her by making her command dash like homelander so for instance all of her normal attack strings that leaves her in the air cost no bar anymore to command dash and it cost no bar when she is in the air command dashing for combos but the next one after that does. and also make fer overhead that leaver her in the air slightly faster. she should also be able plus after hitting her bf2 special allowing her to cameo combo after it. lastly give her back her legacy projectile move back. Reiko: give him his invasion boss special move, the one is like jades dead butterfly move from mk11 but it launches and he uses his spear(this is already in the game files btw). give this guy at least 1 more special move that involes his knife that's on his person but he never uses for some reason. he needs like 5 new normal attack stings involving his knife and his spear, maybe 2 of them be launchers. y'all stay tune i got more heat for every character

They aren’t viable that’s the thing . The gaps in between strings , the bad frame data, you’ll lose to the “top tiers” because of that. So if you play against someone who can actually see what’s going on, it’s literally like mathematically impossible to win type shit (chip damage.. you gotta think about ALL that)

The irony of NRS's games, of all fighting game developers, falling to the casual-veteran divide, is rather ironic. That is, given that they were the _one_ developer to pioneer a dedicated "Kasual" game mode for non "tournament" (e-sports) play. Yet, despite having this demarcated and dedicated game mode, allowing for the freedom of character designs to run wild, it has been _their_ games which have ended up so horridly homomgenised and "balanced" into utter oblivion. It's almost like, since MKX (if not before), the left hand hasn't known what the right hand has been doing at NRS... Either that, or this move to make everything same-y in the pastime of gaming -- seemingly, in order to allow increasingly costly development to be "streamlined" and investment to be re-focused on milking continual content additions (in the manner or "games as a service" by another name) -- has now completely enveloped the fighting game genre too. So, if the latter is indeed the case, and MK1, SF6, and T8 are the slippery slope for the genre moving forward, I, for one, am done with the genre. After all, there are myriad legitimately good and FUN fighters already in existence -- why do I need these dumbed-down, homogenised, coma inducing, "tournament compliant" turds wasting my time and energy? The answer: Unless I'm following tournament scene -- something I haven't done proper since the MKX / SFIV era -- there is no reason to waste time with these mortifying "modern fighters" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

MK9 was a masterpiece

What Tom doesn't seem to understand, is that Khameleon's availability is there to compensate her randomness and that you CAN'T pick her attacks any time you want, unlike what happens with the other kameos. You take away her availability and you kill the kameo, it's like taking away Sub Zero's shield, Scorpion's breath, Janet's punches, Sareena's blades, etc. She doesn't do big damage like other kameos, you can't have a base health or an increased health, and you can't pick her attacks like what happens with the other kameos, so of course, she needs to have something better than other kameos, in this case, it's her availability. That means that if you play Khameleon it's an auto-win? No, you have to play smart and adapt your playstyle to her morphing states, it's not like playing Kano or Lao that you can throw any unsafe move and save your ass just by pressing one button. The problem is not that most of the players use her, the problem is that there aren't good alternatives...make the other kameos more viable and don't breake the ones that are working, otherwise you'll have a Top 4 on the tournaments made by Peacemaker/Kano exclusively.

Optional tag like MK9 and what everyone would have liked. Boon said tag wasn’t requested that much after 9 but that was before internet connections for online gaming and netcode had gotten much better.

36:50 Really? I follow a lot of MK channels of varying fanbases: some provide knowledge/tutorials, some critique the state of the game, some stream tournaments, some showcase gameplay. All of the channel organizers as well as the people in their comments were annoyed by Johnny/Peacemaker in Final Kombat.

It’s crazy how Tom hates on mk11 so hard when talking about it nowadays. But even on his channel from like 2019-2021 he has in depth guides and tech videos where he clearly loves the game, he even says that it’s the best fighting game out there, in his in depth wake-up guide from 2019. I feel like Tom forgets the love he had for mk11 and sub zero in mk11. “Sub zero is awesome in mk11 ultimate” is even a video title. I miss those days tbh, I miss the in depth guides and tutorials that Tom used to put out there. Like I understand he has many qualms with mk1, but I would love to see his in depth guides and tutorials return, that was some of my favorite content out there

MK11 has problems but no way is it as bad as some of the other fighting games over the years. Even games that ppl ended up praising like my formerly beloved SF3: 3S wasn’t honestly that good cos 2 characters dominated the game and it had less than 20 characters. Some were barely playable. MK11 had my boy Fujin as almost undeniably the cheapest and best character but at least 7 characters were top-tier and many others were playable. The mechanics like an insane wake-up system, breakaways and unbreakable fatal blows for an easy comeback were the main issues.

Let’s be honest, there’s several ways they could “nerf” Johnny to make him on the same playing field as everyone else. Making his 8 frame shadow kick a little slower won’t hurt him, making 1-2 of his 50/50 strings a little more punishable won’t hurt him…all for the very reasons you make for other characters. I hope instead they just buff everyone but they’re clearly holding on to a MK11 “very balanced game” mindset….balanced use loosely

The cold hard truth is that Mortal Kombat lost its soul ever since it’s true creator, John Tobias, left Midway back in 2000 during the production of Special Forces. It’s heart on the other hand hasn’t been the same since MK Armageddon, and to be brutally honest, it should of just ended there. If that game was the finale of the franchise despite the writing of the 3D era not being as strong, I would of been fine with it. But no. And sadly, it’s all been downhill ever since.

A more balanced MK9 with FUJIN and SAREENA playable would be nice 😂 I also would like Jade and Sheeva to be better.

I heavily disagree with the idea that mileena ball roll is “just a bonus” it’s a huge part of what makes her so strong. D1 into ball roll is practically unreactable especially online. Feel like you just don’t want that part nerfed because you need it for sub zero 😂

What NRS did with MK11 & MK1, just Imagine if Capcom and Namco went the same route with Street Fighter & Tekken. TWO BACK TO BACK GAMES LIKE MK11 & MK1 within 5 years where they stripped down their characters and gameplay. We would be in the Dark Ages of fighting games because all 3 studios would be trash simultaneously if that happened 💯

Mkx pokes was plus 20 on hit some times more . Mk 1 u lucky if a poke is plus 15 . Suddenly 12 frame mids are so good lol . I will say I hated a lot of stuff in mk 9 random frame data Kabal Johnny cyrax with those long ass combos. I'm not sure if mk9 meta was that great tbh . Mk1 needs help tho and nrs is too incompetent to even hear the outcry of the community.
