The south end of Cape Cod bay, Brewster flats, can be extraordinary. However, when the tide comes in areas behind you that are a foot or two shallower can mean the water might be too deep to safely get back to shore. Go with someone experienced or have a life vest in case you get over your head. Tide changes can be ten feet difference between high and low tide.

If the tides are that big , snorkel find wouldn't hurt either.

So I feel every Brewster Flats fisherman must have a horror story about this - I know I do. It’s exacerbated by the fact that we tend to fish from the crests, thinking we still have time, only to descend down the back side trough up to our necks. It doesn’t hurt to have a local but I think you can avoid trouble by being alert. 1. Don’t walk out all the way. Half way is adequate. 2. Take note of how deep the troughs are as you walk out. Remember to add that depth to the depth of water you are standing in later. Roughly, if you don’t want water up to your chest on the way in, head for shallower water way before it gets to your waist. 3. Don’t wait for it to get over your waist. 4. Beware of the wind. Onshore moves the tide in fast; offshore delays it greatly. 5. Watch the moon phase. Full and new moons mean the tides may recede super far out but they will roar in because they will also rise super high and they still only have the same 6 hours to do so. 6. If you have a self-inflating PFD, you will most likely be holding it above your head on the way in. Even with all my rules I still get up to my chest as it’s gotten deeper closer to shore in recent years.

You should try a 2 handed Skagit setup using Perry poke......great distance for big flies....

I just got into salt water fly fishing this season. I did very well in the spring and have built up a lot of confidence. I would love any info on places to park to fish the Brewster flats... As far as spots or where to fish I enjoy figuring that part out myself. I should also mention I live in MA but not on Cape Cod so I am looking for a safe place to park and perhaps wave a parking fee. If not what are my best options? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Parking is very limited and, “in season’” I’ve never gotten away without a ticket. If you can, I find it’s not too inconvenient to get dropped off. If you are a sight fisherman, the action is usually over by two hours after low. There is always the possibility of blitzing strippers and blues as the water rises higher but I can do without it. I prefer the stalking.

You should at least carry a compass and PFD. If the fog rolls in you can quickly become disoriented. Not for there inexperienced.

Did not address the dangers of fishing there adequately.
