A very brief explanation of MIDI:
MIDI can be sent on 16 different channels. This is so different devices can be used at the same time without interference.
Each of these channels can send additional info on 127 sub-channels, called CC (or Control Change/Continous Control).
The info that these sub-channels send is very simple, but also very useful. All these channels do is send a value from 0-127. This value can then be used to control things like synth parameters, such as the cutoff filter as demonstrated in this video.
So, when you're blowing into your digital wind instrument, all you're doing is sending a value between 0 and 127 to your software or hardware. This value can change continuously based on how hard you're blowing. Continous Control.
By the way, some of these sub-channels have "traditional" roles. If you're a keyboardist, and you use the mod wheel on your keyboard, there's a high chance that the value reported by the mod wheel will be sent via CC1. For that reason, a lot of synthesizers, including Monolit and Synth One, are set up to receive CC1 and use it for stuff without any programming required from the user. This is very useful in the case of Monolit, and a bit of an annoyance in the case of Synth One, as discussed in the video.
Electronic wind instruments usually report the value from the air pressure sensor on CC2. Sometimes other CCs are used, such as 7 or 11. It doesn't matter, functionally, they're all the same, but considerations should be made based on the software or hardware your instrument is connected to. For example, most Garageband instruments are set to respond to CC11. The incredible wind synth plugin EVI-NER is set to respond to CC2.
Hope this helps.

Do you ever find that the expressiveness of the wind controller is impaired by the MIDI protocol? I wonder if very quick articulations get lost. Mitxela made a video showing how he could get much more responsive breath control when he set up his breath controller to directly control an analog amplifier instead of being chopped up into MIDI signals.

@@sound.workshop personally, I never have found that to be the case. That said, I don't think I've ever tried a full analog setup! Most electronic wind instruments can handle very fast articulations, like double tonguing and triple tonguing etc and some are even so sensitive that they can detect humming/growling, which creates a sort of AM distortion effect.

@djbclark4gmail no... Actually I have to disable mpe on some of the soft synths I use (like vital) to make it work properly with the NuRAD! Anyway, because the NuRAD is (mostly) a monophonic instrument, I don't think it would really benefit from mpe. I could be wrong though

@@loghead2437 hey, not really! Were you thinking of using it to change patches? Something like that might be possible by hosting the apps in audiobus or something, I don't think that's built into the softsynth itself... It's a pretty rare thing nowadays

@@StefHaynes gotcha! Thanks man! One last question. I’m struggling to get synth one to respond gradually with my breath control. As soon as it recognizes my breath, it’s like “hitting” the key. It’s got a heavy lush attack, I can’t seem to get the sound to grow from nothing as I begin to blow.

Hi Stef, thanks so much for this. I found this while I was looking for synths I could use that sound similar to the onboard sound of the Akai EWI 4000s patch 12. My AKAI has died and I have moved onto using other EWIs but I really loved that sound. Any ideas how I can emulate the onboard sounds of the Akai, or just that one in particular? Cheers.

@@StefHaynes Apparently on the Mac, Monolit comes through as an AU, VST, etc, but not a standalone app. I tried opening the AU in Logic, but it seems to be missing the midi mapping. I THINK there might be a place to map the cutoff in Logic, but I'm not experienced enough. Perhaps there's another app that will run Monolit and allow you to map the breath. Monolit also doesn't have an import feature either. I had to find the correct folder to load the voices into: User>Documents>BLEASS>Bleass Monolit. I'm loving these voices and having fun (when I should be working! Haha) Thanks so much!
