Hey Will, just wanted to give you a shout out about your book, "Mobile Solar Power Made Easy." You did a fantastic job on this book. You provided all information necessary to help decide on an appropropriate system with several scenarios. Everything was well written, concise, well organized with zero fluff or unnecessary information. I am building a small 400 watt portable system for hurricane preparedness with 400Ah of battery bank. If, at 75 years old, I can do it by following your book, a child can do it. I cannot sing the praises of this book enough. Thank you, it was a tremendous help.

I've installed 3 of the DIY Mr. Cool 1 1/2 ton units in both my home and RV Park office. It does get easier to install after the first one. I purchased all 3 Mr Cool units at Lowes for $1500 each. It's a better option to go with Mr Cool considering the price advantage using DIY method. The cost advantage give you a simple choice when the unit breaks down. It's money ahead to replace than to get a HVAC company to work on it. On the issue of line sets, I suggest you match the line set distance between the indoor and exterior so you don't have the ugly line set coiled up, or install a garden hose hanger for the excess line set and use a RV Tire cover to hide and protect the line set. I've also use a vinyl fire hose as a line set cover for protection and it makes a very nice finished look.

But if you look at it from Mr Cools perspective, in 2 to 3 years they get to sell another system. Cheap vacuum pumps, and a flare tool are not THAT expensive, and you can learn to do it right. I have 4 of the smaller pioneer units. The lines were not precharged, but the outdoor unit was. They do say to run vacuum on the system to test for leaks as well as getting air out before opening the valves on the unit. I love them. They work great. My only issue is they do not connect to WiFi. I’m a trucker. I would like to turn the temp down when I’m almost home. Although they don’t take long to cool down, they are better at maintaining a temperature. Since they don’t use much electricity, I just turn them up a few degrees when I’m gone and let them run. Also they sell decorative covers for the lines. At least coming down the wall. Then you can secure the remaining coil behind the unit.

It started leaking wihen I opened the valve to charge the system. I put some teflon tape on the threads and put the cap on and its still working 6 months later but could potentialy be a problem later on. You take a chance doin these yourself but I factor in the risk of having a problem vs the cost and if you're careful and do your homework I consider it worth the risk.

Will, when you said thousands of dollars to recharge system, it reminded me of the many vehicles that I recharged using Dust off (R152a) refrigerant only about 3 dollars a can and works excellent. What would be an interesting experiment is measuring the efficiency of R152a vs R410a. R152a has a low molecular weight, causing lower high pressures. I would guess a measurable increase in efficiency

It is very frustrating that the videos, even Will's video on running the little 5000 BTU 500 watt window a/c does not indicate how may watts of solar panels to dedicate to the unit. We are beginners and need to know this. EG4 does not answer their phone or emails and their downloads don't say either...so frustrating!

The 24K unit is the one that I am planning to put in my shop when I get finished with the additional layer of insulation. The quick disconnects aren't a need for me as I used to to commercial refrigeration but they do make life easier. The only issue that I am going to have is the length of the line set being too short for where I want to put the units. Once I recover from the cost of the insulation etc I hope to be making a trip out to Signature Solar to pick up a unit. I plan on it running primarily off of solar.

Great vid & review Will. To be fair on ‘Old Mate’, any joins in gas fittings: welded, flared, cliplocked or other can be problematic, even for good professional fitters for reasons they may not always be able to control; age, vibrations, accidental knocks, poor flare fittings quality & of course incorrect torque. I would like to see the manufacturers of these units add a DC interface/posts so we could also connect a 12v, 24v or 48v battery for extra runtimes, to help overcome shading issues and make use of any excess solar that may be available on a given array, as often these units are using much less power than their pv array is able to provide. Imagine if u have a 4wd, camper, caravan, etc, with aux battery power available, parked under an awning or near one of these units around ur house/shed/guest house, you could potentially plug in to the AC unit to make better use of those batteries and keep them maintenance charged at the same time, while enjoying extended periods of aircon after sundown. Cheers

They're also the biggest load on the entire system. It would also mean that I could possibly ditch the built in "on the road" carrier AC system which while still working, just adds to more complexity of our build. Thank you for all your videos about inverters, batteries, solar, etc... they've been extremely helpful in "de-mystifying" all of these systems. So many people I talk to have that "oh you're building your own? you're gonna burn in a fire" mentality towards electrical, etc.

Will I have a MrCool and a Pioneer. Both run flawlessly. If I had to do it again, I would leave the MrCool for the Pioneer. The precharged line sets make it an easy install but they are difficult to find for long installs and you have to coil the lines if you have excess which makes for an unsightly install. When I show off my mini split install, I always show the pioneer because it is neat and tidy. Well done video! Keep up the great work.

The direct solar input would be the way to go if its reliable, saves allot of extra equipment to run it 'off grid' for daytime supplementation. looks like I will be sourcing some more panels in the future haha.

I just installed a Mr cool 12k diy unit into my 42ft RV. It was relatively easy to install with the complexity coming from the RV install since rvs are built with such thin walls and floors. Put the outdoor unit in the generator port under the 5th wheel. Open the baggage door for ac, close it to protect it during travel. It pulls cool air from under the RV and pushes what little hot air it outputs towards the front. Thankfully no short cycling which was a concern prior to install My RV had a 15k and 12k roof mount units factory but in weather over 90° they struggled to maintain 70° for the 500ish sqft space. This small minislip is powered by a 30amp extension cord plugged direct into the meter box when an extra port is available at the campground or it can fairly easily run off the factory 50amp wiring. Just can't use the microwave at the same time. Solar is still beyond my grasp because I don't believe I have enough usable roof space to keep up with my use. On top of batteries/inverters, charge controllers get heavy fast in an RV.
