New DND Subclasses Revealed! 2024 Player's Handbook

Ойын-сауық

Let's look at the new subclasses, spells, and feats from the 2024 Player's Handbook for Dungeons and Dragons. WOTC has been slowly teasing the release of the 2024 PHB for a couple of weeks now and I'm getting a little tired of the vague references to class abilities, subclasses, spells, feats, and everything else without seeing the actual text. So let's check out the new subclasses from the 2024 Player's Handbook in the assassin rogue, path of the world tree barbarian, college of dance bard, and great old one warlock!

    We will need to see the monk reveal later today, but the new hex spell could be amazing on a warlock/monk. Hex, hit them several times with added d6’s, disadvantage on con saves, stunning strike.

    Ohh man I like that college of dance, but I feel like it should get extra attack because it seems to want you to hit and move like a monk. Seems like it would be good with the mobile feats

    Absolutely. In the playtest, it got its 14th level ability much earlier and it got irresistible dance free cast ability at that level instead. I think the idea is that your attacks are more powerful than the base monk and you get extra attacks by spending bardic inspirations. It’s a cool idea and I’ll probably play it. I just don’t think it’s as crazy as everyone thought it would be.

    @@ConstructedChaos The argument against it was that the subclass got a better version of evasion before other classes get the regular version. Which is understandably a feels bad for rogues and monks if they are upstaged by a subclass. But as you said, it isn't op.

    2:50 it deals 2d6 when it fails it save, not when you poison target. Big difference. Poison cunning strike forces target to make this save every turn- so it is 2d6 damage/turn up to 1 minute or until target succeed. (on the round you used it target will roll the save twice taking up to 4d6) While constitution save is usually high at those levels- it is free to use, it scales with your dexterity that now can be leveled up to 30 and there are still plenty of creatures who are not proficient in con saves.

    I'm actually not so sure you're 100% right about that. You are right that they take the damage when they fail the save but I don't think they continue to take that damage on subsequent turns. They specifically state that it happens "when you choose the poison cunning strike option" and then mention "when they fail the save. Still, you are right that they only take this extra damage when they fail the save initially.

Personally, I don't see a reason to buy anything beyond the Monster Manual yet. I know I sound like a downer. But after everything, it just feels like it's best to run it my way.

    @@ConstructedChaos The version of the Ranger I use can use Hunter's Mark more like a non-concentration feature than a spell a number of times equal to the WIS mod, and holds on to it after the target dies like in BG3. @ConstructedChaos I would love to hear your thoughts about the Artificer fitting into the new rules. I hate that we’re not getting the class updated along with everyone else. So how would you homebrew a “new” 2024 Artificer? Would you consider them in the new “Expert” classes and given them expertise? Would they get access to weapon masteries? I would love to hear your opinion

  • @ConstructedChaos

    @ConstructedChaos

    15 күн бұрын

    That’s an awesome question! I haven’t really given it any thought but I think it probably try to build the class on top of the new crafting rules (assuming they’re actually decent). WOTC put out a video on those rules but basically said nothing for five whole minutes haha. If we’re talking about upgrading the current artificer paradigm, I think the infusions system works but could use a boost. Maybe at certain levels the artificer can apply more than one infusion to the same item or even apply infusions to items that are already magical. Most of the new classes got fairly slight boosts in power (and some even got nerfed) so I wouldn’t be looking to make a HUGE change there.

    So just like the Gloom Stalker, the Assassin's premier feature, "Assassinate" has been nerfed (No auto crits.). Do these people actually expect us to purchase this garbage? Do they believe we are totally stupid?

  • @ConstructedChaos

    It has been nerfed to not include auto crits but now it'll happen a lot more often. I suppose this experience is different from table to table but my first 5e character was an assassin and I never got surprise because my party was a hinderance on that front. I didn't blame them, really. And I don't mean to stick up for WOTC here because they've done plenty that I don't like with the new rules (paladin and ranger are rough ngl).

    It wasn't nerfed. It traded damage for consistency. Theoretically, it deals more damage per fight this way. Does WotC think its customers are stupid? Absolutely. In their defense, giving WotC money does make you kinda dumb. So they aren't necessarily wrong

    Playtest version of monk feels really great. Way more flexibility without spending ki, ki usages that improve over time (like flurry of blows going up to three attacks from two), more ways to get ki back in earlier levels beyond short rests, and some more interesting ways to engage in combat. Playtest 8 monk definitly feels sharply more toned for combat with much better overall damage, versatility, and resources to play with compared to 2014 monk; at the cost of a few flavor things like tongue of sun and moon and the ability to astral project being removed. They even managed to make deflect missile finally interesting (can now be used against any attack, melee or ranged, of the physical damage types that then later improves to applying to ALL energy/magic damage types, including psychic!). What got me most excited is that they changed the lvl 20 capstone to basically being barbarian's lvl 20 capstone but for dexterity and wisdom. The only monk subclass I wasn't happy with in the earlier playtests was four elements (or warrior of the elements as it's now called), which just felt like a weird combination of ascendant dragon and astral self instead of anything actually resembling four elements monk (hopefully this will be different in full release). Honestly so long as 2/3rds of the changes from the playtest version make it into the full release I will be very happy.
