I really find it fun watching Chris do these videos knowing that he knows everything in the book, but making sure to not give anything away, even with his facial expressions. But then as soon as Jeremy reveals something and it's considered "public knowledge" he springs into action and we get that deep analysis we all love. Very much looking forward to all his reaction videos that'll be coming out as more is revealed, awesome job!

@odie4495 spellcasting in dungeons and dragons is uniquely strong and versatile compared to other games There was no martial/caster divide in 4e, that is what it would look like, all casters are identical, and they have the same number of spells and abilities as every other class in the game. Oh and then D&D could never print new spells either, only new classes and new subclasses, which I personally hate the idea of The other way would be what Pack tactics perports, give martials martial slots and martial casting, in super human ways which has no real distinguishing game mechanics to spells There are ways to differentiate them in other games, but those all have very strict things that spellcasters can and cannot do, and it culls their versatility into the ground My favourite class is wizard, i would very much dislike that outcome.

I'm very happy to hear about Epic Boons and how they work. Them allowing scores to go above 20, but only giving you a +1, means you don't necessarily have to max out your important stat ASAP, if you're playing that far. That means you can be more flexible with the feats you pick as you level up, as opposed to hinging upon Ability Score Improvement specifically.
@Shalakor
Ай бұрын
With all normal feats now giving +1 (as per the playtest), you probably should still be at 20 in your most important stat before reaching level 19, though. Taking the ASI feat for +2 will probably be a much rarer pick in 5.24E than it was before, since feats are still roughly all 5E full-feat power (other than eliminating the -5/+10 mechanics of Sharpshooter and Great Weapon Master) level while also being what 5E players would refer to as half-feats. ...All of that is to say, it's no longer a choice, you can make just abut any fun and thematic feat selections you want and still favor the mathematical side at the same time.

Stoked for protection style boost! I love the idea of the meat wall protector but 5e doesnt have a super great option to play that appropriately
The Optimancer has optimized upload times!
The surprise rules are a very clever simple way to do it, it has a similar flow to what you want surprise to do, which is one side having a chance to act first which can be HUGE, but it doesn’t mean they get a whole round to themselves
Sorry for the double comment. But I am so insanely excited to play an Eldritch Knight. It does exactly what I want. I want to be level 11, get 3 attacks, and use one of those attacks to cast Booming Blade. Or use 2 attacks and fell an enemy then throw a firebolt at another enemy out of range. I don't care about the divide between martials and casters. I just really like the flavor of the Eldritch Knight.
At level 11, you can combine topple, push and slow in one round. Make enemies prone, slow them then push them back. Step back a little bit and the average enemy won’t be able to reach you. Or you can just PAM reaction attack them. Could be great at kiting/totally scuppering enemies

Shame they didn't mention the actual reason why they didn't just merge battlemaster back into the base class is because they still want to keep the class as simple as possible for new players instead of using a system they already have in place that can be used to help a new player learn how to play, Sidekicks.

That said, the hit point increase at level-up seems like it should be an exception due to its permanent nature.
Thank god for the surprise changes. I’m running a game right now and I have to be super careful about when players can surprise enemies (to be fair one of the players is a bugbear with alert and a twilight cleric who always boosts his initiative so that makes it even more impactful). I either need to have the enemies be far more numerous than normal just so the combat isn’t a cake walk done before enemies take a turn, or (and this is what I’ve started doing) is making it so enemies aren’t really able to be surprised because they’re standing guard or otherwise aware they might be attacked, so players can start unseen and be untargetable until they’re seen and also get the benefits of being seen for their first attack, but they don’t get an entire round first.
I used to play this game called Earthdawn. the way they handled the martial-caster divide was twofold. first off, all classes were somewhat magical in nature, and secondly spells, although powerful, usually took a couple of turns to set up. you might cast a minor spell every turn, or you could work up to a bigger spell that might take 2 or 3 turns before you can cast. things like crits would speed things up.
As a mad champion fighter enjoyer, I am completely delighted with the changes. If i wanted to look at a menu I wouldn't have picked fighter, and advantage on athletics checks to my eyes is the kind of versatility I always wanted. I always got tempted by a barb multiclass just for that ability, as it lets you wander around the battlefield basically doing shenanigans. A few rerolls on top and it actually might be worth toppling statues or shove-kiting for example, and to me more attacks = more shenanigans = more versatility. so champ has more than any other option in the game, at least if the fluff-versatility that I enjoy coming up with
I know Colby from d4 D&D Deep Dive loves to multiclass when building characters in order to combine a lot of powerful features to get some fun synergies. But now I wonder how his videos might change now that higher level features are so powerful and desirable. Same with Chris here. His knowledge of the game feels encyclopedic to me. I can't wait to see the synergies he finds between and within classes.

We're probably at least a year away from a complete DC20, but I'll definitely be covering it when it comes out.
... still think that they could have incorporated the champion into the base kit and give the subclass something new. Increasing the crot range, while nice, only really gives you additional 5% chances. So with a 19-20, you have two 5% chances. Weapon mastery helps branch the fighter out, but how many players are actually going to use multiple weapons instead of just sticking to one? (Either great sword or rapier depending on build.) Granting the three masteries to all weapons is neat, but diminishes the appeal of mastering the weapons with those traits. The spell school restrictions I didn't mind because they made sense with the subclasses. Using two attacks for a 1-2nd level spell, with your limited spell slots, seems kind of meh but neat to me.

Imagine you fight undead. You would use Protection from Good and Evil to give them disadvantage on attacks. Now normally this would consume your whole attack and then you'd use your bonus action to attack once. Now you consume two attacks and have 1 or 2 attacks left in the action. You can also use cantrip on the same turn as well as bonus action. If you have polearm master, you can still atta k with bonus action. So anyway this new war magic is miles better

I can’t believe they aren’t including Quick Toss… it was literally my favorite maneuver. I love the idea of a thrown weapons master… but they just get no love. The best you can do is use the new fighting style that was introduced that gives them +2 damage, multiclass to get the archery fighting style, and use darts with the sharpshooter feat. That makes them on par with using a longbow. With the changes in sharpshooter and without the inclusion of quick toss, I fear that just like in 2014, trying to make a thrown weapons master will be useless.

Im very glad they changed the surprise mechanics. I had a character die because he failed his perception check. Against a stealthy beast. Whats more, is it stops the confusion of "surprise round" where some people thought it wasnt even an official combat round.
I feel them saying they didn’t want to put a bunch of maneuvers on the base class is a little contradictory when they implemented weapon mastery… but it’s not a system just for them, but for all martials. It just seems weapon mastery is a more limited selection and limiting it to weapon type. You could have done the same for fighter base line manuvers. They could have only had a choice of 2 maneuvers out of 5 or 6 pre selected manuvers. The battle master could have just owned that mechanic of the fighter and have a much wider array of manuvers at their disposal. I’m not mad we never got manuvers for baseline fighters, just disappointed. The weapon mastery is still a system a player has to think about, and it adds some depth, it works, just isn’t what I wished for.

I mean even with two it's still would greatly complicate the class. And battlemaster being the high skill fighter option, while the others were for low levels of complexity is a fair assesment. Cause I've been trying out new systems and having the most simple class(fighter) be complicated sucks
This is cool. I want more.
surprise is something rarely if ever happened and if you managed to get it you deserved the free turn.
I use the dwarven thrower in my current dnd character and quick toss was super powerful with that so I’m sad to see it gone
I always used quick toss to throw a dart as a finisher with my battlemaster "gunslinger" build. It will be sorely missed.
I noticed that there's an article on D&D Beyond now that includes the Indomitable change, which wasn't in the video.
It looks great. You guys really listened to the community. The only headache with the Fighter is that weapons with sap, push or slow end up being terrible options for him (goodbye long sword). Still, it was a great solution. I would opt to allow him to use any known mastery as long as the weapon allows it (for example, replacing graze to cleave on a great sword). Even so, the simpler path was good for most players.
It's really disappointing how often that they're using the loophole/technicality of "xyz is new!" Because it is technically new to the PHB, only because it wasn't in the 2014 version, it was published in Tasha's or MotM or something. Not only is it disappointing on general principles, but it's almost a little worrying because if they thought the perception of being fresh & new was important.... they could have just done so.

I like Tactical Mastery, although it slightly makes weapons that already have one of the three masteries worse for Fighters, as you basically miss out on one Mastery Option. I guess the best weapons to use from that point are weapons that don't trigger their mastery on a hit like Graze or Nick. Lots of fun new theory crafting :) also I'm totally gonna play a Fighter 1/ Monk X with a Nick Weapon giving me three attacks every round at level 2 (unless they change something from the UA so this won't work)

I think that at least the champion should get the ability to swap fighting styles once per short or long rest, and at later levels gain the ability to have two active at once. This would make the champion a more versatile fighter to go with the theme that they are the most fighter fighter sub class. You could change from a more offensive fighting style to a protective fighting style to defend an important npc, or to an archery fighting style if you are planning an ambush, essentially your fighting style would become like a prepared spell.
Extra attacks, now as a resource!

So with the loss of Brawler, the new Fighter subclass dyads appear to be Champion (straight forward fighter) vs Battlemaster (tactical Fighter) and Eldritch Knight (arcane/learned magic fighter vs Psi Warrior (psionic/innate “magic” fighter).
Can you say if War Magic still specifies 'Wizard Cantrip'? Big sad if it does.
I liked when Chris called this new version of D&D 5.24! 😃 I’ve been calling it that ironically because I know the designers are keen to have these books knows as “2024 edition” but for me Xanathar’s was 5.1, Tasha’s 5.2, and these latest reprints (to me) are less of a change thus 5.24!
If you can get a good charisma score with a 2 to 3 level Warlock Dip on an Eldritch Knight the new War Magic could be amazing with Eldritch Blast.
Bonus movement when scoring critical hits is such a random buff to give Champions.

Chris, How does the new EK attacks with spells features work with the new action surge? si be they swap out attacks … ?

Also, is rhe spell progression for EK a half caster yet or still 1/3 caster ?
Wooh, this Tatical Master sounds increlible! I liked the idea of Master of Armament, but was to confusing and restrictive. This is just beeter for me.
Level 9 mastery. IF you have 2+ attacks, can you say Topple with first attack then Sap with second? DO you change mastery after an attack (Weapon base mastery then change to one of the allowed masteries) Or at will before making the attack?

It's with every attack so yes
I never believed it from the jump, but any holdout I had gets eroded more and more with each video that onednd would ACTUALLY be “backwards compatible”
Did the spells get some of the attention you were hoping for? Shaving down the broken peaks and filling in some useless valleys?
It always cracks me up when you stop the video because you've been dying to say something and then Jeremy says nearly the same exact thing, nearly word for word once you hit play again. (it happens often).
It's not a second wind if you get more than one lol
brace looks to be missing as well from the battlemaster maneuvers
You can also use your heroic initiative on death saves. Making it next to impossible to die 😂😂
I have to say that I'm a little upset that they opened up the Arcane Trickster's spell list. I kinda liked how playing it had you feeling like a normal rogue but with a focus on illusions, as opposed to just taking all the best spells. Can still be played that way but it's hard when optimizing to not just take all the best spells instead of grabbing a handful of fun illusion spells because you have no other options
I see a Artificer/Gunsmith in one of the pictures
The Graze weapon property means if a character misses 20 times the wizard dies anyway. Also there would always be rolling for concentration. Since each miss will be the equivalent of a max magic missile roll.

Yeah, I really like the graze mastery.

@@TreantmonksTemple it does have it's uses, though I believe it makes it way harder to survive as a early game wizard if enemies get mastery properties.
"At second level the monk can expend discipline points to use his unarmed strike shenanigans. To use a shenanigan expend a displine point before you make an attack roll and pick one of the following shenanigan options: ..." 😀
I like the changes to Champion. I feel like “simple” shouldn’t be forced to mean “underpowered”. I guess we’re yet to see if it is enough, but at least its a good step in the right direction
I’m guessing psi dice scale with level instead of PB.
