New Diamond Sharpening Stones From DMT

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

We're pretty excited about these new stones from DMT. There are double-sided stones in formats that have previously only been single-sided, and expanded grits are available on existing double-sided stone lines.

    I purchased the 8 inch dia-sharp double sided medium extra fine / extra extra fine plate, (that sure is a mouth full) and have been really pleased with it as an option in progressions. I’ve used it for finishing after coarser diamond plates, and also to better bridge diamond plates and ceramic wet stones (that’s always a thing). The plate has been breaking in nicely, but just a FYI, they break it in a little at the factory. I was confused when I took it out of the packaging as to why it looked like someone had used it, until I read the info card it came with.

    Sounds like you've got a great setup! Part of the reason why the plates look that way is the incredibly small size of the diamonds. There are slight imperfections on the steel plate and they show through the diamond layer. The 4000-grit diamonds are just 6µm (microns) and the 8000-grit diamonds are 3µm. To put that in perspective, red blood cells have a diameter of about 7-8µm.

    I´m really curious about the 4000 and 8000 grit diasharp but multiple people made the claim that in these ultra fine grits the diamonds aren´t embedded in a nickel layer but just glued on. Can you deny or confirm that?

    Seems like DMT is the goto for stones. I don't have any, but have read a ton and they always pop up, whether it's full sized stones or smaller field sized with sheaths. Thanks for showing them, I hope you get your medium grit wishes this year. YMCA, oh wait, DMT's great.

    I purchased the "extra extra fine" plate and it said in the literature included it was equivalent to 30,000 grit. It is as smooth as bare metal, but I can hear it lightly cut.

    Interesting, I'm not sure where it says that in the DMT literature. The extra extra fine uses 3 micron / 8000 mesh diamond abrasives. Grit and mesh tend to line up pretty close.

    @@SharpeningSupplies Thank you for your reply. I stand corrected. I went and found the DMT paperwork and it indeed states 3 micron/8000 grit. So I guess what I'm after is a hone between 1200 and 8000. Thanks again.

    Sign me up for that 2X medium grit when it comes in, but the one I really want is the 8X coarse. I hear it will have just the hope diamond mounted in the center of the steel plate. I bought the dia sharp set along with the 2X fine when it first came out. My pocket knife has never been so sharp, and today I was noticing the mirror finish on the edge of my wood lathe skew. Diamonds aren't just for the ladies any more.

    weird how a month later now all versions appear on DMT original shop price but does on your site. Somewhat confusing/puzzling. Anyway I'm buying a new knife so I'll consider the new grits (I already have the 6" coarse, fine & extra fine)

    As someone who is just starting out, any advice on choosing between the duo-sharp and dia-sharp options? My use is just kitchen knives that are already in reasonable shape.

  • @SharpeningSupplies

    @SharpeningSupplies

    5 ай бұрын

    The big difference is that the Duo-Sharp won't clog up as quick, while the Dia-Sharp will sharpen a little quicker. If you're just starting out, I'd recommend the Dia-Sharp, as they're a little easier to sharpen on.

    I have a dmt diamond plate and about 1/4 of the surface simply has no diamond on it. Very disappointed with this. I have some cheap China diamond plates that have been working for more than 2 years and they're all works fine to me.

    I bought the extra extra fine and the surface was all diged up, pakage seemd new and un damaged, is that normal? because I see in the rflection some of that in your stones too

  • @SharpeningSupplies

    @SharpeningSupplies

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes, that's normal. It was a bit of a surprise to us too when we first unboxed them. What you're seeing are scratches in the metal plate, not damage to the diamond surface above it. Part of the reason why the plates look that way is the incredibly small size of the diamonds. The extra extra fine (8000-grit) diamonds are 3µm. To put that in perspective, red blood cells have a diameter of about 7-8µm. So you're seeing through the diamond layer to the metal plate underneath. But if you have any concerns, feel free to contact our customer service and we'll do our best to help you out.
