If the boat stops quickly, what's to prevent a lot of broken noses amongst the cyclists?

Question for the team and designers: Is there a limit to the wave height you can fly, or can you increase the foil height to compensate for higher waves in heavier winds? Does the science exceed the risk a human should take?

Its like crewing a yacht, but not really, more meat for the grinder and Helm, Trims and FC do the sailing. I don't doubt these guys fitness or dedication, but crikey.

I know they cycle to charge the energy required to move the foils, but how that energy is applied? They charge a battery? or it is an hydraulic type of mechanism that compress air? I imagine the sails are not even moved much, because the apparent wind comes always from the front.

most stuff on the boat is controlled by hydraulics from the foil arms to the major sail controls. cyclers provide power by pumping fluid into a gas hydraulic accumulator which is then released to the systems that need it by valves controlled by a battery. winches can be mechanically connected to the grinding pedestals. I haven't read the new class rules but iirc foil flap activation can now be done electrically (with limitations) in the previous cup it had to be mechanical and done with hydraulics as well. the hydraulic accumulator is pretty small and can't store that much power which is why you see the grinders going for the full race, they can't frontload or anything. there is also more sail adjustment than you would think simply due to the massive loads in the sails. they aren't travelling far but they travel short distances continuously with huge loads. because of this there is actually a ton of difference in mainsheet design as teams look for more energy efficient ways to control the sail so they can do more micro adjustments while still having power for manoeuvres

if you wanna know more mozzy sails is the only youtube channel i know of that gives real technical/developmental coverage of the cup so i highly recommend them. they have some vids from the current cup cycle but their vids from last cycle are mostly still relevant

@@allistar6933 you don't compress oil. hydraulic accumulators work by storing energy either in a compressed gas or a spring. The ones on AC boats use compressed gas. that compressed gas is what generates the pressure on the fluid, which is the oil. so no, it is not all oil
