Can you imagine the stress of being filmed as the new guy? Everyone needs an opportunity/chance to prove himself. What matters is if you see potential in him then give as many chances they need. At the end he could make you proud of him.

I think the guy did a great job. Laying stone is not easy, one can easy be overwhelmed by staggering and changing pattern. The most important is weather its level, straight and correct distance from wall. He seemed conscious of all three. He'll get faster.

I could see in the new guy's eyes, he's nervous but eager to learn. Sometimes being over eager is going to show errors. Give praise when the praise is due and telling him when he is wrong with respect. You are the Master of the trade.

I’m a 22yr old bricklayer, and last year the company I spent my first 6 years with went bust which meant I had to fly the nest, not to toot one’s horn but I am very decent bricklayer and I remember the first time I had to walk on to a new site where I didn’t know anyone and the only thing I had in my mind was proving myself which I knew I was capable of…. That whole first day was daunting, making mistakes which I would’ve never had done just a few weeks prior as I knew I was better than that…Anyway a few days went by and I was put in the foyer to do some face work which not every bricklayer gets to do in their lifetime. I say give him a chance, if not.. well you tried

Can he show up every day on time ? Never lay out or pull no show ? And most importantly does he have a good sense of humor ..because let’s all agree they don’t call it work because it’s fun…first day jitters and you left him alone with H O …he looked like he was trying his ass off man…you have a good heart and I know you’re gonna keep him and pay him well…right ?

I always find your videos very helpful and clear. I have managed many people over time. This guy is taking his time to do the job right. Having the home owner looking over his shoulder and stopping the work would make anyone nervous. He stayed cool and quietly did the job. It was great that you stood up for him as well. (He won't forget that you did that for him.)

Usually there are small, medium and big stone. My labourer stacks them in a pile in order so it make it easy. This is a nice job minus the fact there is no stone saw... I know chip cuts are faster but a saw makes the cuts so much cleaner.

Best comment so far, you have to lay out the materials [ this is not stone] so that the mason does not have to pick through a pile of materials to get the right piece, A wet saw at bench hight is better, safer and quicker for the mason,

Hey! It seems like he was just nervous. His mannerisms and the way he was looking at the stone did not necessarily mean that he didn't know what to do, but indicated that he was in a new setting, with new people, with new rules and a new way of doing things. Also, if you are in the trades, you know how unsettling it is to have the home owner standing over you. Unless you are fully confident, this will add more stress, cause you to second guess yourself and get in your own head. I respect the fact that you are showing him what you want, I am sure once he understands what your expectations are and becomes comfortable, he will start to move fast. Everybody needs a chance, if he is accepting of your suggestions and mentorship, has a great attitude and shows up consistently then you have a great guy there!

The customer has every right to provide feedback on the quality of the work being done. The feedback should be given to the site supervisor or contractor/owner. If not on site or available by phone, the customer has the right to speak directly to the employee. To help facilitate the introduction of a new worker, take the time to introduce that worker to the customer, letting the customer know the worker is new to your crew and he is being trained to your standards. Reassure the customer this "training" is not adding to his cost. Ryan, you are an excellent leader and value to the craft / community! Thanks for being there.

he seems good, looks like he wants to learn! I'd say keep him, he'll improve the speed over time. Being the new guy and then having the homeowner there definitely doesn't help anyone no matter how much experience you have! You've definitely seen some bad jobs (your hard job videos prove that), and with your demeanor teaching him I think he will turn out a great mason. The homeowner may be the boss, however you are the contractor, and you know your guys, don't let homeowners who don't know what's going on push people around. You're right, we need more people in the trades, they all gotta start somewhere!

The only way to learn is by being taught and practice, every apprentice needs a Journey men to guide them and give them honest feedback and let them learn. Sometimes mistakes will be made but that’s the process, I am a certified gas fitter and plumber and the only way to succeed in any trade is to listen and ask questions and don’t be afraid to fail. There’s nothing worse then co workers setting you up for failure because of there lack of self confidence!!

Anyone new on any job. will only get better at the job over time served in the job doing practical work. they will pick up tips from other more skilled people who have done the work for a long time. This young man is at least asking you what the rule for laying random size stone is that you follow. So in my opinion he is doing the right thing no harm no foul. Just a fussy home owner making him feel uncomfortable because he knows that he is a rookie brick layer. Being new and slow on any Job is not a crime. And you as the Manager should know that new employees are hired on Ability to do the job in a probationary capacity period. Thumbs up to you as the boss for caring. 👍

You are in a tough situation. The home owner, for some reason thinks he knows about stone. Because he can, he has made a decision about the young man--{no respect for the work that the young`n is doing}. He respects you and your decision making. However he has ask you to lay the stone pattern the way he sees it with longer than the excepted run of stones the same size. With jobs like that, all you can do is the best that you can for the moment that you are on that job. You are dealing with how different folks see the world--{stone work}. Everybody sees it differently. I applaud you for taking the mind set of giving young folks an opportunity to become proffecient in learning stone masonry. I was a bricklayer and stone mason for 30 yrs. The last 10 with stone only.

As a former stonemasonry apprentice (i switched trades), being able to watch this guy work made me feel so much better about myself when I was laying stone. The way he took longer to start because he couldn't understand what to put where and then later slowly you can see him getting the ball rolling; is so relatable to me. It's literally how I worked with stone, but then I always got yelled at & scolded for laying the stone too slow I eventually gave in and quit. Now I switched to professional caulking, but man if I could've seen this back then, it would've helped me a lot. This guy can definitely become a good stonemason, so long as he stays passionate about his work. P.S. I respect how you defended your workers and cooling the homeowner down. My boss would always just give in to any single complaint and give me shit.

His work is fine, your laying stone, not making wristwatches or furniture. The most important thing on any masonry job is that all of the work looks somewhat the same. The homeowner is being too particular, he should go bother some other tradesman on the job. As far as smoking cigs on the clock- that's a big no no. Ryan isn't paying you to smoke, he's paying you to put units in the wall! Smoke during your break, or at lunch, better yet, not at all. You'll thank me later in life if you quit*

When I started in the early 80's , I was the only one that wasn't ltalian, so if you did something wrong he would yell and scream at you all day. The problem was all of them would be 65 in the next 5 to ten years, even the owner was over 65 . After one year I didn't go back I got tired of the bs, iam sure things have changed since me and you started if not who is going to do this trade. The only thing that was a positive was they wanted you to lay brick no laboring, if you did the Forman would lose it. Started at 12 dollars an hour.

He just seemed nervous he seems to understand the rules of laying stone and he seems willing learn. Understandable of the homeowner to pick up on him being unsure and become sketched out. Toronto is not a cheap place to buy a home let alone build one. He wants the best product for the money he is spending. New bricklayer just needs a little bit of time to loosen up and get a little more confident. Give him a chance. If nobody took a chance on any of us we wouldn’t have Became the bricklayers we are today.

No smoking!!! We're here to work, not smoke! For one, where are the cigarette butts going ...into the customer's yard! I've been watching you and your crews for some time now and I don't see anyone else smoking.

I taught myself to do this work and I do a very good job now (lots of learning pains, let me tell you), but I really love these videos from pros like yourself teaching the proper rules of laying and the technical aspects I couldn't know without being taught by experts. Lots of tips have helped me increase my speed and quality so thanks and keep up the good work and videos mate!
