Poison bottles contained anything toxic to people, such as strong cleaning solutions, not necessarily poison that killed things. Some bottles are embossed with 'Not to be taken' meaning - do not ingest. The bottles were also brightly coloured and had ribbed or studded sides - so if you were a Victorian stumbling around in the dark you could feel which bottle had dangerous chemicals in. To see another rare and unusual poison bottle I found click here kzread.info/dash/bejne/mYCixZZmnr2fkbA.html

I feel like the colour and patterns on the bottles were also aimed at people who couldn’t read, not just for those fumbling in the dark. Also blind people would have been able to identify them by the ribs, crosshatches, and studs.

having worked in a glass factory that made bottles and jars, they add metals and minerals to get glass to different colors. No dyes Cobalt for deep blue, gold for red (at least in the old days). Manganese for purple and Chromium for dark greens to black. That just the beginning...

Timeless beauty in what were ordinary, everyday objects. I can only imagine the anticipation you feel as you unearth each piece. The backstory on the Balsam was quite interesting. It's shocking what people in their pursuit of profit, were willing to do and saddening what people in their desperation were willing to accept. Perhaps things never really change. Thoroughly enjoyed this video. Until next time. Much love.

I clean bottles with rice which scrapes the dirt off without scratching the glass. Half fill with warm soapy water, add a teaspoon of uncooked rice and shake well. Rinse in clean water. For stubborn muck, fill with hot water to the neck, add a denture tablet and leave for couple of hours then rinse. I know you probably have your own ways Si, but if they don't work then try these.

You should let your friend know about the wonderful bottle paintings done by Sarah (partner of dirty secrets of Scotland channel). Sarah did an amazing painting of a Lysol Bottle, as well as a green and a blue “poison” bottle. I’m not sure if she does the bottle images on her channel, but Willie definitely shows her drawing the Lysol bottle on his channel. A great gift for your Lysol collecting friend Tim, would be a print of the nobly Lysol bottle from Sarah’s Etsy store - She Walks She Paints. 🙂🐿🌈❤️

What at great Si Finds and Mates bottle vid! I think the clean up is the best part of bottle digging,,,,,,if you find some neat things! My Great Grandfather was an Irishman and liked his nips. My Grandfather told me he loved his Paines Celery Compound medicine that came in a nice square Amber bottle. I was told their attic was full of these bottles. I don't have an original but o do have an old one that I gave to my Grandfather and came back to me. Paines Compound was 70% alcohol so you can see how it really healed people, eh? Thanks Kindly Simon, some really great finds! It might be that the decanteriththe grapes was for vinaigrette or oil because of its size. Wine decanter usually held a wine bottles worth, this is what I've been told by me mentor who lived from 1889-1981. My Grandfather lived from 1892-1989. This is what I need, a good early bottle dump. I believe that's labeled, "COFFEE & CHICORY." Popular in New Orleans, Louisiana Area of the U.S., Chicory is a blue - flowered weed with a root used dried as a Coffee Substitute or Enhancer. It grows by roadsides in the wild.

Gorgeous to see all the bottles. I live vicariously in your vids because the only bottle dump in Pretoria has been fenced round and there is a huge squatter camp 100m away....the bottles I dug there in 1980 are packed faaaaaarrr away.
