New Bosch Heat Pump Lines 2021. Quick overview of what's different.
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Bosch has now been making heat pumps for a few years and have started offering more products and equipment. This video is meant to introduce the 15 SEER, 18 SEER, and 20 SEER lines. Bosch has carved out a niche and is showing more flexibility by offering what we would consider a "Good, Better, Best" option now.

Wow. Thank you so much for your kind words!
I had the package unit 19 SEER inverter system installed two years ago, it's an amazing unit !! The only issue we had was the thermostat like you mentioned. The Bosch BCC100 thermostat is absolutely the worst !! We replaced it with a Honeywell T10 and no more issues. The Bosch wouldn't hold a steady temp and was all over the place, sometimes being upwards of 5 degrees above set temp and wouldn't stop the heat cycle. The Honeywell T10 has been no trouble and is far more accurate. The Bosch unit is a true variable speed and handles the heat of Arizona summers extremely well ... highly recommend it.

Great points! There have been issues with thermostats mentioned in some cases. For some reason they will drop the cooling or heating call, and this makes the outdoor unit start the process over again. I have also seen that people size for heating, which can oversize the unit for cooling mode. I never sized heat pumps for heating, and always sized for cooling and never had any issues with heating.

@@NewHVACGuide Up here in Upstate NY we have installed TONS of these systems that are sized for heating and have had zero issues with them cooling. In our climate we normally see heating loads that are twice as much as the heating loads. My house for example is running a 5-ton IDS 2.0 with a 4-ton indoor coil on a 80k 2-stage gas York furnace. We staged the blower to get lo speed as stage 1 in cooling so we can hammer humidys without overcooling. Stage 2 ramps to med-high to handle any capacity calls. The heating runs med fan speed in stage 1 and high speed in stage 2. I run the heatpump down to 35 where I then bring on the gas furnace. Big thing is to make sure your manual j is on point. As far as Bosch air handlers, we gave up on them and now just use 2-stage York air handlers so we can get the various fan speeds and ECM blower motor. Its been a great combo for us!

I know this is an older video. But really struggling to decide between bosch ids 2.0, trane xl17i (xl18i) or maybe goodman gscz18. Not sure if i shouod go with inverter or maybe stick with a 2 stage. My hvac guy loves the boach units but is also a trane dealer and basically says theyre all good which leaves me even more stuck.
Which Bosch unit series would you recommend in a 3 ton unit for small condo in Florida: a WQ or a SV series?
Hey Josh, I have a question about applying Bosch split heat pump for my house. I have a Goodman 3.0 ton Heat Pump that is 10 SEER that was installed in my house in 2000. No backup resistive heat coils are required. I have four thermostats with a Trol-A-Temp controller and motorized dampers to send the heat or AC where it is needed. The damper on the largest zone is left slightly open to insure adequate air flow across the evaporator coil at all times. The Goodman unit has only required a motor start capacitor, a contactor, and occasional coil cleaning to keep running for 22 years. During the peak of the summer during sunny hours the 3 tons is sometimes a little wimpy. I am considering either the 3 ton or the 5 ton. Would the variable speed models allow either system to ramp down to only what is required to handle a zone or time of day demand? Would appreciate any comments about Bosch Variable Speed Inverter Systems in house with motorized dampers. Thanks. I live in the People's Republic of California so reducing my electricity use while maintaining comfort during the summer are my primary design considerations.
Josh, I have an HVAC contractor that is recommending a Bosch IDS Premium system (2 three ton units) to run the heat at a home on the coast in Connecticut (where winter winds can get brutal during January & February, etc.), and he's saying that the 20 seer system can handle the heating side of those extreme months because he's going to add ELECTRIC HEAT components into the top of each air handler cabinet which he says "should" kick on whenever the heat pump is struggling on the heat side (like during extremely cold/windy conditions). He did say "should" which didn't make me feel comfortable...idk. But I don't see any videos on these ELECTRIC HEAT components, which I think are Bosch add-ons to the IDS systems...which IF true, and IF they work...are a pretty awesome solution to get a home on these high efficiency Bosch heat pumps W/OUT a furnace backup (and coupled with future solar panels for this home to pay for all the electric consumption). I figure worst case, IF they don't work well, I can add a Bosch furnace onto the system at a later time (the one that integrates with IDS). But w/out a furnace, there's much less complexity, and cost savings from avoiding the furnace & propane. So, what do you know/think about these ELECTRIC HEAT components? Can you possibly do a video about them?? Lots of people would be interested in this if what I'm yapping about is all true. Thanks for the vids 👍

Hello. Yes. It’s very common in Virginia to have electric back up for heat pumps. I’ve done videos on heat droop and wind the back of heat should turn on. It does not work like a dual fuel system where it operates based on outside temperature. Typically heat pumps with electric back up monitor the setpoint and indoor temperature and check on the back up heat if there is a 2° difference or more

@@Sam-dc8qq I have a Lennox system installed here in Ohio and the condenser unit just went out. Our contractor actually recommended the 18 seer Bosch condenser unit as a compatible replacement. Our Lennox air handler has 10 kilowatt electric strip auxillary heating which we've been running on 100% for the last 2 weeks. It uses a lot of power but it doesn't have to run nearly as much. With temperatures right around freezing, it runs about 4 hours a day. YMMV depending on your insulation etc. The electric auxiliary heating will supplement the heat pump in very cold temperatures as well. 10 more days until I get my Bosch unit and I'm pretty excited to try it out.
Quick question! I have a carrier air handler that’s a variable speed 1.5-3 ton- was wondering if it’s compatible with a Bosch 20 seer condenser? Is it ok to mix and match brands?
Our issue with our present system is the noise of the burner.
I have 2 of these. Brand new even ductwork. I've n=been in my house since june. now winter and upstairs temp set at 68, it's cold but the one bedroom is freezing. Why is this happening. Two story house blow door test was very good. Everything is insulated and sealed. But my daughter is freezing at 68 degrees. My bedroom is set at 65 and not freezing. What could be wrong. I wish you were here. I'm in NY on Long Island.
Saw one of these for the first time yesterday. New install and the customer thought it was too loud because he could barely hear the outdoor fan in his bedroom. I wasn’t too impressed with the design. They could have made the fan much quieter and not being communicating restricts the performance on cold days.

I'm looking into a new unit with heat pump, curious how this could result in savings. Electricity is 22 cents/kWh here, but a reduced rate in the winter if you have a heat pump. My house is 97 years old, concrete and slate roof.
@Droneflyers
Жыл бұрын
Heat Pump efficiency depends on the exact outdoor temperature. You can do the math calculations based on some averages. Long Island, to your benefit, has somewhat of a Marine influence which means less super-cold. My quick take is that the Bosch or other low temp capable Heat Pump will do decent on the shoulder seasons and on a warm winter like this one - BUT, you should fire up the oil in super-cold. Dig around online - you can find exact calculations - or, email Bosch and tell them basics....they should at least be able to provide an idea of how many BTU's per KWH should be expected in a particular weather situation. I myself would use 30 degrees if I were on LI - the temp is higher than that the vast majority of the time.
I'm currently finishing up framing of our new home and am hoping you could provide a professional opinion on sizing before purchasing my Bosch 2.0 system. Home is 2400 sq/ft with a full basement. I received back my Manual J, D, and S calculations and they sized the home for the BOVA-60HDN1-M20G pump and BVA-48WN1-M20 air handler. My concern is why they didn't opt for the 5 ton air handler as well and as I presented that question they went with the issue of "Oversizing causing Short Cycling/Humidity Control Issues" as a response. The heat load for my home was almost 82,000btu and the cooling load was at 47,000. My concern is relying too much on the heat strip on the occasional single digit temps here in Missouri and wanting to use the heat pump's capacity as much as possible to compensate for that. Am I wrong to assume that slightly oversizing for the cooling load on an inverter system should not be as much of a concern as they are making it out to be? Is that not the benefit of having a variable speed pump? If I'm wrong in my assumption I'm fine with that but figured I would reach out to Bosch directly to ease my mind either way, and wanted to do so before having them resize the duct work for the 5 ton Air Handler. Below I will attach my J, D, and S results for my home. Thanks for your time and your professional opinion. Additionally I just read a 2 year research report on how oversizing variable speed heat pumps had a significant increase in efficiency. Here is that report: eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.aceee.org%2Ffiles%2Fproceedings%2F2014%2Fdata%2Fpapers%2F1-371.pdf&data=04%7C01%7Cac.techsupport%40us.bosch.com%7C7530dc875f594414919008da01dab5d1%7C0ae51e1907c84e4bbb6d648ee58410f4%7C0%7C0%7C637824336387908713%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=q4gOg4DLvtvnCeVCC19dIXZ8d8wXNhNXlPyW%2FQgkpKw%3D&reserved=0

Yes you are wrong unfortunately. Oversizing wil certainly cause issues with humidity. The BOVA60 is technically a 5 OR 4 ton heat pump. It’s all about the programming
Excellent video but I am still a little confused. I just plunked down some money on a 3 ton unit (listed on the invoice as "Bosch (BOVA 36-HN1) 18 SEER Modulating with Inverter Technology") which will be mated to a BMAC3036BNTD coil installed in my existing Amana Goodman furnace (GHM95 series 2 stage). This is replacing a Goodman 2.5 ton unit which of course had a warranty that expired in January. Looking at Bosch documentation I found the 18 SEER units are now BOVB instead. I'm not sure what the difference is between BOVA and BOVB. Based on what is said in this video I think the BOVBs are 1.0 models. Since the description for my unit says modulating is that a 2.0 model? I don't know if the BOVB is better in some way (better parts, design flaw fix, more reliable?) and I should ask for that instead? Note that the 20 SEERs are still listed as BOVA. If I am reading the charts correctly, when combined with that coil the BOVA 36 has more cooling capacity and is more efficient than the BOVB 36 (17.5 SEER vs 14.5) although the BOVB has a slight edge in heating capacity and a higher CFM. Based on the performance data I would prefer the BOVA so maybe I shouldn't worry about it.

The installer therefore did not attend to the installation instructions on that issue (a big one since the system operating wakes me up at 3:30 am) and then left the instructions in the unit. I had to ask for it so he had to open it back up to give it to me. sigh.... How would I know what to look for? Outside the obvious ie location. I am hoping you monitor your comments - here is my problem! My package unit (2003 ICP) is LOUD LOUD LOUD inside the house! There is nothing wrong with the unit.....it's just that the combined noises, probably mostly the distribution fan and air noise, makes for 55 db (way too loud) in the bedrooms which are on that same wall. Have you had problems like this? Having a super quiet outdoor unit will help a little, but I need quiet indoors. Do you think just getting a newer unit (any sort) will automatically be much quieter indoors? It's hard to sleep with 55 db on and off.

I monitor them. I just don’t respond to them all 🙂

Have you had a pro take a look at your issue?

@@NewHVACGuide The unit has been serviced and all is well - pros generally say "we can't tell you what the noise level is going to be inside" - which is troubling since that is my only problem! I'm told that ALL newer units are much quieter but I have no idea of how much. There are a lot of guys who install units who don't know the gory details of sound transmission. I used to build recording studios so I had some experience in it. 55 db is definitely way too loud. I'd be looking for 35 in those bedrooms. Since no one can specify it may be that I leave the old system in, turn down the blower speed and install a mini-split with small (6-8K heads - 2 of them) in those bedrooms. That was I know I'd have a good sleep and the noise doesn't matter during the day since we aren't in the bedrooms.

@@craigissod6027 wow, i share your frustration. see my post above. i have the same issue and have no place else to move the unit because it's so big. The db info is very helpful here. Thank you for that.

@@janetmyles8703 no doubt a split system is the quietest I had the bosch 3 t installed w the intention of putting a tiny split in the two bedrooms also. Turns out we are happy w the bosch package unit alone. I won't say i cannot hear it but the reduction has made it so that it has not woken me up even once in over s month
Hi Josh, question for you; is it possible to increase the CFM output of the BOVA Bosch air handler? I have an IDS 2.0 Bosch system installed. My HVAC guys were supper smart and decided to only put 1 register/vent in a room that sits on top of a garage. Obviously it gets cold faster there. But the silly part is; the ducting on this room is one of the longest run coming from the basement utility room. I am hoping to increase the CFM speed of the air handler since I notice the top floor overall have weaker air output. Thanks for your help.

@@NewHVACGuide My air handler bosch model#BVA-48WN1-M20 and my outside unit is BOVA-60HDN1-M20G. Thanks for help. One of my plan is to have my HVAC guy come back and add another register/vent in the room that sits above the garage. You figure they realized this during installation/construction lol.

What a pickle. Have your contractor check static pressures and then adjust according to pages 14 and 15 in the manual.

@@NewHVACGuide Thanks Josh. I'll tell them that. Does adjusting this parameter increases CFM output of the air handler? Cheers!

Adjusting the airflow will do that. Checking static pressures will allow them to understand whether or not there is proper airflow through your current ductwork.
What's the deal with everyone on you tube afraid of truly giving a accurate review, to be afraid of bashing other brands and being afraid of them not longer selling parts specially if you work in the business. I came here looking for that, instead just got a overview and general specifics.. instead of doing a good comparison with others and why.
Thanks for your videos! Wondering why some Bosch training said stay away from smart thermostats. I'm looking to replace mom's 3-ton gas pack and the Bosch unit just looks like a no-brainer on specs. 18.5 SEER vs. 14 for everyone else. (Mom's got solar, so losing the gas heat works out ok on heating cost.) Only problem is that local installers don't seem to be offering Bosch. Yet.

We were told the Bosch firmware “learns” your home and will malfunction when installed with a stat that is also “learning” or “smart”. They work against one another. However, I’ve talked to other who install them with smart stats and have no issues. So I’m not convinced one way or the other yet.

Reasoning is that the Bosch Logic is 90% in the unit itself. Any thermostat which is too fancy is going to mess w/the factory logic. We used the simple Bosch thermostat on our Bosch package unit.
Where is the Bosch equipment made? I read somewhere it was China, but I hope not.
