    T man That's so funny. Very different when I pick up a new ride. I sneak off to the LBS when she's preoccupied for a few hours or better yet, out of town. I then ride it so it's dirty and then hang it in the garage like it's been there forever. I've only been caught once - when I bought the Sirachi Red HT. My advise -- stay away from brightly colored bikes if you don't want the wife to know you have a problem habit 😜😱.

    Congrats! Can't wait to hear more about your experiences with the HT. I'm nearly convinced this is the bike for me also, only other contender is the Remedy 9.8. Did the Remedy come into the equation at all, I wouldn't have been surprised at all if you had picked it after seeing your review. Thanks for all the informative videos, can't tell you how much I rely on your reviews to evaluate the different bikes.

  • @mtbyumyum

    @mtbyumyum

    7 жыл бұрын

    Bob, thank you! Remedy only comes in a 27.5 wheel size now. For this reason I didn't consider it for the 2017 season. That said, it was an incredible trail bike that sort of does everything well. Both the Giant Trance and Remedy were very good "do everything" bikes... jack of all master of none maybe... I don't know. The Hightower is a more specific high speed shredder in my opinion. The 5010 was also a more specific bike. Depends on how and where you ride really. For the trails in my videos the 5010 is likely one of the better options. I guess what I'm saying is the Trance or Remedy are really good every where but don't give you that incredible feeling I get on the Hightower when in it's element or the 5010 in its element. Hope this didn't just confuse you more... so many good options!

  • @bobw2971

    @bobw2971

    7 жыл бұрын

    Thanks, good comparison. I like that he HT has the option to use either wheel size, but it may be overkill for my riding and area. Maybe I should consider the 5010? My riding area is mostly technical single track with both rock gardens and smooth fast flowing sections. There are some log road type DHs too, but those aren't too rocky or technical, just steep and fast. I'm looking for a bike that handles and turns well on the single track sections, while still providing a stable DH ride. It seems like the 5010 would be a good fit, but is it worth giving up the option of running a 29" wheel?

  • @mtbyumyum

    @mtbyumyum

    7 жыл бұрын

    If you have a lot of high speed trails the HT is going to be faster and more stable. The HT still rails the tight twisty trails it just isn't as poppy as the 5010. I'd try and get a demo on both!

    Dude, If I had trails and the riding style to buy the Firebird I for sure would... it has been my #1 favorite bike I've ridden so far. Just don't ride at that speed and those trail very often. If I ever get the channel to the point where I'm getting bikes for free or at least incredibly discounted... I will for sure get a Firebird or something 170mm... so fun! The Hightower is better suited for my riding style and trail system!

    Love the channel! Thanks for sharing all your insights. I am actually debating between the 5010 and hightower. Looks like you'd be the man to tell me which one you prefer. I ride literally the same trails you do (Draper, SLC, Moab, St. George) but cant decide which one would be better. What you think?

  • @mtbyumyum

    @mtbyumyum

    Daniel, thanks! The 5010 is one of the most playful and fun bikes I've ever ridden. I use to ride the 5010 and loved it just about everywhere. On really long descents that were chunky and high speed the rear suspension could get overwhelmed... I had actually replaced the DPS shock for a float X2 but in the end I sold the bike and picked up a Hightower. The Hightower, or at least something similar to a Hightower is in my opinion the perfect bike. If you can only have one bike and like to ride everything from XC trails like Annes and Canyon Hollow to more black diamond trails like NCS and Fireswamp in Park City, the Hightower can get it done better than the 5010.

I'm heading to St. George at the end of April to ride with BKXC/Chasing-Epic. I've never ridden there. Looking forward to it. I'm taking my HT & my 5010 😎😎. Did you keep your 5010 ?

    I began riding MTB in 1990, but the bikes were nothing like they are now. I've gotten back into riding the last 9 months or so on a borrowed 2004 Stumpjumper FSR. That bike is leap years ahead of what I used to ride. I am 5'11" and run about 210#, will likely run around 200# by this summer after more riding. That being said, would you recommend the Hightower 29 for my size in a L frame? We ride similar terrain over here in Northern Colorado as you do in Utah. I like a bike that climbs well and is compliant on the descent. Thoughts?

    Awesome stuff, look forward to some videos. I am just curious about something. What do bike shops do in Winter when the trails are closed? Great question. Most shops around here sell fat-bikes. Google it! When the snow is really cold and packed down you can go ride all the trails in my videos... I hear they are smaller companies and will not have a comparable warranty. I also hear that Yeti climbs great but has problems with breaking swing arms. Quick question. My local trails (Don Valley Trails in Toronto) are really twisty and technical. Climbs are mostly short and steep. Lots of tight turns and really tight switchbacks. Would you go with the 5010 for those types of trails or would you say that the Hightower 29er handles well enough? I am still riding an old Santa Cruz Blur classic that I love...but I think it is time to retire it. Beautiful family BTW, Congrats! I'm lucky to have a wife that rides as well and getting both kids into it now!

  • @mtbyumyum

    It's always tough to say. If you can get into the obstacles with a bit of speed the 29er will roll right up it. If it's super slow obstacles, like walking slow, the 29er for me can feel a bit clumsy... hope this makes sense. Short steep climbs with good traction are a lot of fun... honestly you just need to demo if you can. Having just ridden the HT on an incredibly tech'y ride last week, I can say I would have had more confidence on my 5010 but that is like because I'm more familiar with how the bike climbs and how I can push it around. I have all the confidence in the world that the HT is going to be great after I get some good seat time in there! Also, I'll have lighter wheels in a few weeks... these stockers are boat anchors ;)

    Tough call... I could go either way and would be happy. I would pick the one that has better local support via a bike shop if possible. If they're both in you town, go with the one that has the friendlier and overall better bike shop. Good luck!

    Out of all the bikes you test ride .... why did you choose the high tower ? and can you do a comparison against the fuel EX as I'm really struggling to choose between the two

    Great question. I was between the Hightower and Pivot Switchblade. These bikes are incredible stable at high speeds, super fast everywhere, climb really wheel for how plush they are and both still feel really snappy and nimble at slower speeds. I'm always hunting for a bike that is lively and snappy and fun to pop off stuff with and still stable and plush on the rowdy steep gnarly trails. It's a hard thing to accomplish and honestly the best way to do it is have 2 or more bikes. But in my opinion, for my style of riding and the trails I ride most, these are the two best bikes I've ridden. The Fuel EX isn't nearly as plush or stable at high speeds or when the trails turn steep and rowdy. It's still a trails bike but still leans more toward the "XC" side of "trail bike" where the Hightower and Switchblade lean more toward the "enduro/all mountain" side of "trail bike". Doesn't mean the Fuel EX isn't the right bike for you. Just figure out what type of riding you want to do and get the bike that best suite your terrain, speed and style. Good luck!

    I put over 400 miles on the Hightower in the last few months and it's been incredible! If you can only have 1 mountain bike at a time the Hightower is a tough one to beat... and the new colors are sick!!!

    I really liked the SB4.5 but it suffers from the same reasons why I sold the 5010 for the Hightower. SB4.5 gets bucked around a bit at higher speeds or when the terrain gets a bit gnar... like the 5010 it can handle it but not like this Hightower! Yeeew!
