The worst things uThermal has ever said have been stream-of-consciousness thoughts that he says aloud while being distracted by micro etc. You can KIND OF argue that they may come off as "cold" or "insulting". Most of it stems from confusion when an opponent has bad strategy, or excitement/disappointment when an opponent mis-micros. All that to say: The meanest thing he has ever said is nicer than the nicest thing most others say. He has a very sportsmanlike attitude. You can tell that even his "worst" things said are constructive in nature. I mean ffs the guy gets excited when someone kicks his ass with a good strat or out-micros him. His love of an actual challenge and not being even remotely upset when losing is contagious. Just "GG"s all around. And when salt gets thrown his way? He enjoys that too. It makes for good content. But his response to it is basically saint-like and he remains unfazed. And one of his responses being, "Maybe you should take a break for a while if you get that angry." is a wise and healthy way to approach it. You should absolutely take a break if you get that mad. Also it's probably the most infuriating thing a salty player can hear because they didn't even get a reaction.

I think you're one of the most chill and respectful people who I've seen play this. The only time you really "dunk" on anyone is if they do something truly silly or just plain awful play (for their rank) You practically never talk bad about your opponent without giving great criticism of "This build made this mistake" or "This is where they messed up" and I think that's awesome.

Hey uThermal, responding to your question “Am I cold?” I would say you are blunt - straight and to the point with your observations. I haven’t seen you do it to harm or to insult, but you are quick and to the point. Given that you coach, I see parallels with sports coaches I’ve worked with; The intent is to identify a problem, explain why it’s a problem, and explain how to fix it. The goal is to improve performance and elevate the game. I appreciate that. I wish the best for you, your gf, and your cat!

It may be that since English is his second language that the sincerity in his tone is overridden somewhat by the language barrier of using a second language to express himself. He isn't cold, just perhaps less emotive than what you'd see from a native speaker. That said, it is impressive to speak multiple languages at any skill level and it's very clear he's comfortable with the language and very proficient. Clearly though, he's definitely a professional person and his 'saltiest' is merely shown as somewhat annoyed even in the worst circumstances.

Ye he sometimes says stuff like "this is terrible never do this guys", but he is saying that more in a coaching kind of way. He is trying to share his experience and saying something is terrible is meant to mean "there are better options". Maybe it would come across warmer if there was more/better explanation, but the guy is already commenting and playing at the same time. There are limits lol.

I can see how Therm's fun-loving style of enjoying winning battles could rub some people the wrong way but I'd just ignore them. A part of growing up is learning to take it on the chin that your opponents in any competition are sometimes going to easily defeat you (even with a hand tied behind their backs) and that they're going to enjoy their victories. To contrast, I used to watch BeastyQT and there were times where I thought he could have trolled his opponents a little less like when they were direct with him, but even that wasn't really something to apologize for. That's life and that's the nature of competition. I don't think Marc is mean-spirited about it or has behaved that way in any sense in any of the videos I've seen. I can respect this player's perspective and also believe there's nothing for Marc to apologize for or change. If he did it would likely take something away from the content we enjoy. You keep being u, Thermal. We like it.

I love how, even though you're so good at the game, you still treat it for what it is; a game where people are meant to have fun. You never purposefully do something to ruin the fun of someone else, which is so rare in competitive games (at least in my experience). If you point out the flaws in someone's game, it's always in a chill and, more importantly, constructive way. If I ever found out I was playing against you, I would watch the video of it ASAP because I know that your advice would help me improve. Besides, I struggle to see how the phrase "that's silly" is cold.

I can understand someone not liking you criticizing their gameplay (some people just cant accept criticism) but that's because you're looking at it from a pro's POV so you can find even the smallest problems with their builds, micro, macro, etc. But thats what I want to hear. You're not only playing, you're teaching us at the same time. It gives me an understanding of what makes the difference between a pro and amateur. Your knowledge of the game is so great I love seeing how a pro plays wild builds. I've watched a lot of your playlists now and I've never felt you're cold or disrespectful in any way. @00:31:18 Yeah, I kinda agree with him in a bit. Sometimes, when you are getting a bit carried away, especially after some particularly good trade or fight you are getting a bit... I don't know, cruel? Not the best word tbh, but yeah feels kinda. Don't get me wrong your clips are soo entertaining, no doubt about. I watching them lately like crazy 😅. Nonetheless - my personal point of view - I enjoy much more of your 'crazy' builds and 'might be bit scary' openers (no puns included 😂) than commenting on opponents. Of course that does not refer to your objective comments about their moves like: where did they make mistake, what happened there. The main reason for that, mainly, I think is that sometimes I sympathise with your opponents, since many times they have absolutely no idea what they are against 😂. It is kinda easy to fail against you if one does not know what is dealing with. You are very skilled and think / act out of the box. So getting off guard against you is not that difficult. Hence some comments from your side being bit mean towards your opponents does not appeal to me. At the end - don't get wrong impression. Most of the time you are absolutely respectful and top notch multi-player out there. Keep up the good work and thanks for all. The entertainment 😊

In my experience, you call out good plays and bad plays pretty evenly and fairly, so I suspect what’s going on is simply that it’s never pleasant to hear criticism. When I get criticism on my gameplay from friends, it can feel cold, but I know it’s not meant to be at all, because it doesn’t feel that way when it’s criticism about someone else. So I get where he’s coming from, but it’s definitely not something to take personally, because it’s unavoidable that criticism will feel cold or bad or unpleasant or [insert negative word] by someone somewhere. He wasn’t too bothered by it, though, since he was still chatting with you, so I think he genuinely was trying to give constructive criticism himself, but I think most people would probably disagree with him. Your criticism is very fair, and never talking down, but also very constructive, which is what makes the videos fun to watch, in addition to the uniqueness of the strats. Keep up the good work!

I have an idea for cyclone / mine, when used against Zerg or protoss but not terran. How about if the only purpose of the cyclones are to kill observers and other forms of vision / detection. You combine the cyclones with medivacs and many orbital commands (for scanning purposes), and all you do is run around and snipe observers and other vision. You run in from the front and the sides and the back and you are constantly sniping those observers, and then run away. Then you stack your mines in primarily defensive configurations. Then you let the enemy just break against walls of mines. This is a macro game. You trying to go to the very end. You try to mine out every last mineral and every last gas. Your opponent has high technology and plenty of bases and plenty of resources but he has no vision. Every time he moves anywhere, there's a mine waiting for him. So basically, just the same as what you have been doing, but the cyclones don't actually kill anything other than observers or other vision. Obviously, if some unit steps right in front of your cyclone, then you'll kill it. But mostly it's just hit and run with the cyclones on any observer. Of all the kills that you get during the game, try to arrange it that the mines are doing at least 65%. This will not be easy as it requires tremendous skill to bounce those cyclones in and out of there. Your cyclones are split into two or even three groups, possibly combined with medivacs, and it's non-stop move, scan, drop, snipe, and then run away. The best place to run away to, of course, is somewhere where you have some mines.

p.s. Building kills (from planetary forces and turrets and that sort of thing) do not count towards the 65%. So basically, the mines will do twice as many kills as the cyclones, and building kills don't matter one way or the other.

Regarding the "cold" comment: Several factors come together here. 1) I have noticed that people from central/nordic europe (The Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Sweden, ...) are often very direct or blunt in their statements, especially in languages which are not their respective mother tongue. This often leads to them being labeled as unfriendly and self-opinionated by other people, especially when these people grew up with english as their primary language. The same can be observed with Harstem in some ways as well. 2) You have to remind yourself that you're smurfing. Even though SC2's MMR system quickly shifts you up to higher ranks, you still play against people way below your skill level for the vast majority of your games during the X to GM series. Even after 33 wins you're still scratching at the lower GM MMR of the American server. While these people are already quite skilled at the game, getting stomped by a player with GM mechanics and understanding of the match ups straight up isn't fun for them. I can tell this from experiencing it myself in other games. 3) What is even less fun than losing is being caught in an almost certainly lost match with the winning party dragging it out. I have noticed you start to drag games out because you want to try something special, like the micro-challenges you set yourself in the Mass Marines series, or trying to snipe a Nexus/Hatch with one or two shots in the Cyclone challenge. Quite often I have the feeling that you actually have the game in the bag and can finish the game quickly, but pull back and decide to drag it out. This obviously gives the opponent hope that you may screw up in the long game, but the defeat will be even harder to stomach, because you just don't make these mistakes often and they get stomped after investing 20 or 30 minutes into a game which should have been over after 10 minutes. 4) These people then may stumble upon their games on your channel and feel publicly humiliated. While I understand that you do these series for entertainment purposes and certainly don't mean harm to your opponents, I can also understand the side of the Zerg player who labeled you as "cold".

I think you have a healthy competitive spirit. And a little bit of banter is actually appreciated. You often point out when your opponents do well and you often say that you want them to do well for the content. You're just really good at this game so people are frustrated when they play you. But that's not your fault. I also think that you deal really maturely with salty players, which shows your great attitude. I think your criticism is usually constructive and gameplay related. So it's actually very helpful for anyone watching, including your opponents. You also criticize yourself frequently btw, so that's all good and fair in conclusion.

I think there could be an argument for you being disrespectful when you ask if a player is psycho for doing certain things. No, they're probably not psycho. It's more likely that they don't play Starcraft for a living, or they're just diamond, or they just play more casually and don't have time to research and perfect everything due to work, kids, etc. But otherwise, I like that you point out what they do well, what they could have done better, and how they might have taken advantage of certain situations. And I respect how you react to the BM players calmly.
