    For anyone who's planning on putting it in a USB/thunderbolt enclosure - Do NOT. It's a DRAM-less SSD which uses HMB (host memory buffer) meaning it's using your PC's system memory for write cache and the lookup table. HMB does not work over USB and thunderbolt unless it has direct PCIe lanes assigned to the drive, and even then that's not a guarantee. Without HMB its nominal "1000TBW" (1TB model) endurance will get closer to half of that, or even worse.

  • @shapelessed

    @shapelessed

    Жыл бұрын

    Just to clarify - Technically HMB will work over thunderbolt, but only if there's no USB hub, non-standard controller or anything like that between the SSD and your computer, meaning it has to have direct access to the tunnelled PCIe connection. The most you can have between the SSD and your computer is a PCIe switch, if you're daisy-chaining it through a thunderbolt dock. On the other side, if you're using thunderbolt docks, you should have enough time and money to find an SSD with a DRAM cache.

    Excellent point. Many KZread channels are pushing these (sponsored) cheap Chinese dramless drives, and they show high speed test scores but fail to mention how those transfer speeds fall off a cliff when you exceed their HMB "cache". Or how they fail after 8 months. These Chinese manufacturers also have a bad habit of changing parts to whatever is cheapest without changing the model number and telling customers about the changes. There is a reason the quality manufacturers SSD's sell for a premium compared to these cheap Chinese knock offs. You get what you pay for. Likewise some controllers are known to cause premature data loss or failure, but they continue to sell them because they can get away with it (avoid Innogrit). The whole SSD market is an unregulated minefield for consumers. When shopping for a SSD, I want to know what kind of NAND flash it uses, does it have Dram cache or not, and what controller it uses......good luck finding that info. They don't make it easy to find, and they will change parts without any warning, so you can't trust the info IF you do find it. I hate to sound anti China, but this is a country that has put melamine in baby formula to make a profit. Yes, they don't mind if they kill their own babies in the quest for profits. There are some Chinese manufacturers that make quality products, but for every quality manufacturer, a dozen counterfeit, knock off, cheapo companies will sprout up to ruin the reputation of the market. SMH It's frustrating as heck.

    Hi, I really enjoy watching your videos on KZread. You bring really interesting topics and comparisons that no one else does. I have a question that might be silly! Is there a difference other that speed between Sata 2.5 drives or m.2 SATA drives and NVME SSDs in terms of longevity or stability of the drive? Would either be better for long term storage of files? Thank you so much.

    Today I found a banging deal on the Dutch Amazon for the new NM790 4TB drive, I was looking for something very high capacity and TLC. 217 euros for that, the WD SN850x 4TB is about 330 and the 990 Pro 4TB doesn't ship yet and will be expensive, the 980 pro doesn't have a 4TB option and the other drives in it's price range are either QLC or from brands that I've never heard off like Emtec. And the fact that it is also blazing fast is a great plus. Just will have to wait for about 10 days when it's in stock and shipping. It will be replacing a 6TB Toshiba P300 SMR drive which I use as a game drive, however is painfully slow at updating games.

    @@Waldherz WD makes the best storage on the market - and by best I mean most reliable and longest lasting - BY FAR! Not even Samsung can compare to quality, endurance and reliability of WDBlack drives. Almost all the biggest companies use only WDBlack drives. I've yet to see someone use Samsungs drives. My company and me personally, been using WDBlack HDD's and SSD's for decades now and never had one fail on me, neither have I ever even heard of a WDBlack drive failing! On the other hand, I've already seen and heard dozens of stories and comments about Samsung, Corsair, Kingston, Crucial and Silicone HDD's, SSD's and NVMe's failing and dying. If a drive failed in my company, just one order and one SolidWorks file getting lost/deleted would cost us MILLIONS and I would probably get fired. That's why we use only WDBlack NVMe's, 1x main drive and 2x back up ones PER PC - and there are 16 PC's for 16 people in our offices - 12 of which are used by our engineers to work on, including myself! Kingston is also supposed to be a company on par with Western Digital, we've been using their SSD's for years and recently their NVMe's too but I don't know about their KC3000 NVMe's. Anyhow, you can not go wrong with WDBlack drives - the most durable, the safest and the best quality drives on the entire market. They are not expensive either! Again, WDBlack drives are so reliable and so durable that almost all the biggest companies use them, including our company and myself personally! If WDBlack drives are good for the likes of Sony, Google, Ford, Mercedes, Amazon and whatnot, then there's just a tiny little chance that they will be just as good for your average individual.

(using Primocache, and using 32Gb of RAM as L1 cache as well) I still need a storage drive, and one of these Lexar 790 would fit the bill quite nicely. Being DRAM-less is mostly irrelevant for this purpose. Plus in my particular situation with the Primocache setup i use, it truly IS irrelevant. In fact its the drive that would make the best use of it!

    You just can't get at the Nvme slots once a big brick of a GPU is installed, so I ignored them on my motherboard and when with standard old slow SATA SSD drives. You would think they would be terribly slow by comparison. But once you fill NVME's or SSD's up past the 1/3rd mark, they all start to slow down tremendously the same when they have to start writing on that 2nd, 3rd, and 4th layer down... and so your 60mbs SATA interface limit is not such a bottle neck any more. That, and most of the time you're reading small chunks of file at a time, not gigabytes at a time... I watch speed tests and the speed gains by even the fastest NVMEs in the real world during booting or loading a game... is only a few seconds.

    @@RaviPires I belive the peak load can be higher, it's basically as much as controler processed, and its waiting to be flushed. I think most should not go above 128MB even on feakishly bad loads. 32 is like idle reserved space. big thing is that it's uses BANDWITH from your ram, so when drive is going at full speed, its bandwith can be 10Gbps lower for other apps. If you have direct storage, without HMB you go disc -> vram. with HMB you can do nand -> ram -> vram, which limits your performance. cryptominers run out of bandwith for example with HMB, with games it might be like 2fps lower on average.

    @@deilusi Oficial HMB driver is limited to 64mb at the peak load. Its not evdn consistent 64mb hmb. Usually the peak is 32mb, sometimes it being even 16 only. Its not something that can go over it because its literally set as binary on the driver, so theres no possibility. A one of a kind modded device can be made using a higher ammount? Yes. Does it exist and its sold in a common basis? Not even industry or server-grade.

    In the end in real life you won't notice the difference in numbers, I think reliability that is tested in time is much more valuable and Samsung has already established that so they can sell their products with a higher margin because of that and people don't mind as long as they know their data is safe. Just my oppinion. Lexar is also a brand name but more established for photo and video storage on other mediums not SSD at least for now.

    Yep nevermind, I decided to skip the Lexar NM790 to NM800 Pro M.2 NVMe Solid State Drive for this time in my opinion, so guess what, sn850x was on the first place when I just bought it on Amazon for the past month, sn850x is on the third place, Adata Legend 960 is on the second place in my opinion, at this point, nm800 pro is a sn850x beater, 990 pro killer or 980 pro killer, lag eliminator and stutter dominator, so that's why nm800 pro is on the first place for now for this time to be honest.

    You didn't specified if PC or console. It's totally fine on PC, but PS5 doesn't support HMB (not yet at least, but with the influx of new high performance DRAM-less SSD's they may add support), so a DRAM-less SSD like this one may have poor performance on PS5.
