New Belt, Still Squeaks! What I Found...

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

After replacing the belt on this 1999 Ford Ranger, it still had a squeak once the engine warmed up. Here's what I found.

Great video, very to the point! Had the exact problem. Tried to get a new tensioner from the NAPA and Lordco Auto Parts, but it didn't come with the new bolt. My truck had an original tensioner so I ended up at Ford, for the same price, came with the hardware. Ford Part Number 3L5Z-6B209-AA 3L 1995-2000

I have had that squeak for years, and have replaced both the belt and idler a couple of times. I was befuddled because with a quick shot of WD-40 on the belt it went away. I went out and did the same check you showed, and bingo that was it. My next door neighbor thanks you. She has been listening to that old Mazda Truck start up early in the morning for years.

My ranger is in the shop for the belt chirp. Yesterday when to pick it up and behold it was still chirping. The mechanic was scratching his head at why it was still chirping. Today if it's still chirping when I pick it up, I'll say we'll look at that the tensioner looks bad. 😏

Oh my god!!! This is EXACTLY what my car sounds like! And i couldn't figure it out. I brought my car to a mechanic and he told me it was an idler pulley, I replaced it myself and it STILL SQUEAKED!!! This makes a ton of sense cause I also used a stethoscope to pinpoint the noise and the tensioner made a rumbling noise. So do u think its the whole tensioner or just the tensioner pulley?

I have a faint squeak and it happened after I replaced the tensioner and I’ve checked everything and it’s all good belts pretty much new as well it’s not noise but I can hear it when you rev up the engine like it’s tiny squeak not going to turn heads as I drive down the road but it’s bothering me. I didn’t understand what’s up and all the pulleys and accessories are lined up dead straight on so I don’t know.

I already knew the tensioner is almost more important than the belt itself. I can run 10+ year old quality belts as long as its tensioned well, its perfectly quiet. Get a bad automatic tensioner and no new belt can fix it. Not a common problem for me, as a diyer I only had that once. "New" junk yard tensioner and it was nicely quiet again. (the car wasn't worth doing a lot to). I haven't changed a belt in years. I work on cars about the 20 year old mark. They still run great, so why get rid of them.

I have a question about my 03 Mustang GT. I have put both new idler pulleys a new tensioner (2 months ago). I put a new belt on it a couple of days ago and now I have developed a LOUD squeal. As the engine and belt heat up it quiets down. I have checked the way the belt rides and it appears to be straight. What would you check next? I am taking the car on a long road trip and would like to resolve the issue before I go. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!!!

Great video! I'm hoping this is the same problem I have with my car right now. My car has been squeaking even after replacing the belt and my mechanic can't figure out why. My car only squeaks/chirps while idle and sometimes when I step on the gas. The squeaks only starts when my car is warm too. It does not squeak while I'm driving. Was this the case for you or was it a constant squeaking when your car was warm?

I didn't do it right away but it seemed like the squeaking stopped after the put the car back together. I did get the 2 of the coil packs and spark plugs replaced in another garage shortly after (way cheaper). The sound hasn't come back since. Whether it was just taking things apart and putting it back together or indeed changing the coil packs and spark plugs, I'm not certain but I'm happy that the chirping stopped :)

I took my 2005 Honda Civic to the dealership because the belt would squeal when I turned my defrost on the highest setting. They said that the belt that was on was in pretty good condition, but it was an after market belt and that it should be replaced to fix the issue. I paid the $125 to replace the belt and 2 days later, when I turned the defroster on to the highest setting, it started squealing again. I'm taking my car back to the dealership and demand they fix whatever the problem is without charging me anything extra. Does anyone know why I keep having this issue?
