Definitely going with "cautiously optimistic." It's good that JMS is involved, but it's going to be difficult to see new people playing Delenn, G'Kar, Garibaldi.... It might work better to have new characters that fill the same roles, honestly. Kinda hoping to see some nice cameos from the surviving original cast. Peter Jurasik as the Centauri emperor or Walter Koenig as President Clark, perhaps?

The scenes were digitalized into full HD already. If they would just remake the CGI stuff with modern equipment, and replace the old one, I would pay huge money for it. But that is NOT what will happen. Battlestar Galactica reboot happened at the last possible moment, before the total communist takeover of the industry. It will get green light and money ONLY if it is perverted beyond recognition. No reboot or sequel after 2010 was immune to this, but after 2015 all went straight to hell. Babylon 5 reboot will give you flashy unwatchable CGI, Gigantic space battles, a full feminist Delenn with matriarchal Mimbari, a full gay Londo, environmentalist Vorlons and industrial half machine Shadows.I am afraid I cant even imagine all the madness what will take place... after all Star Trek, Star Wars and Dr. Who went far beyond my worst fears...

I love the original BABYLON 5. It was a miracle that he got to tell his 5 year story through syndication, not knowing year after year if it was going to be completed. And in the 4th season you can tell JMS was trying to tie up as many plot points as possible should he not get a season 5. I am hoping the CW will commit to the full 5 season arc so he can take his time, build his story at the pace he wants, and as you say, "stick the landing" I will be watching it, but if it devolves quickly into a STAR TREK DISCOVERY scenario, I will be unplugging from that planet, and plug back into the old one. Thank you for going over this. Were Straczynski not involved, I would instantly sour at the idea of a rebooted B5. However, his involvement leaves me hopefully optimistic... Just hesitant. Most beloved shows that have been rebooted really fall short of the mark and those that do succeed are rarely allowed to finish out the stories. Battlestar Galactica is one of the painfully few series that actually made it, but out of the hundreds of attempts to remake or reboot something I have yet to meet anyone, myself included, that can name at least five that have done so.

When B5 came out its effects were groundbreaking despite its small budget but modern means require modern levels of funding, something B5 was never given when on the air never mind afterwards. Babylon 5 per episode budget: $800,000 & a warehouse under a flight path. Deep Space nine per episode budget: $2.1 million and state of the art facilities and tech.

We should not expect to see any old characters recast. JMS not only has huge respect for the original cast but also the characters. Andreas Katsulas is G'Kar for him (and many fans likewise). Seeing someone else play a G'Kar again is unthinkable. And thats just one example. So, when you think about it, there can only be one option here: Completely new characters that have different story arcs - this leaves the old performances of brilliant actors untouched and untarnished. While the overall struggle will likely to be the same with Shadows vs. Vorlons, we will likely not see a new Sheridan, Delenn or Londo again. The show is called Babylon 5 for a reason, namely the act of war between Order vs. Chaos, as that is integral to babylonian myths - hence the name of the show. That won't change; but everything else is in flux.

But his season 5 just wasn't well told or well acted, many cringe-worthy scenes in 5. And also the second season of Sense 8 was not good, not sure of his input there as it felt too much SJW, from what I read there was a push for the LBGTQ message to be bigger where the first season that was just a part of the overall story. Sense 8, which I thought had great legs, just failed because of the woke agenda in season 2, and I am an LBGTQ supporter, but interjecting a social agenda too often wrecks a good story. I heard that this reboot is being handled by the WB, and WB is also behind the new Dune movie. Thank god, Disney wasn't able to buy the WB, and that Paramount isn't involved in these either. The WB has it right. I've given up on Star Trek and Star Wars, although the new show Picard and "The Lower decks" aren't bad, but yes, this B5 reboot will be good, as long as it stays with WB and JMS stays involved. JMS is also right on in that this isn't a carbon copy reboot. It is going to unfortunately have to have new actors, and I'm expecting quite a few story plot changes. I'm going to be honest here and say I think this is a bad idea. Even with JMS involved I just can't see it working. Part of the reason for my skepticism is that there was an incredible chemistry between the original cast and the brilliant storyline that arced through all 5 seasons was something totally new for TV sci-fi. B5 broke so much ground, brought so much new thinking to TV as a whole not just sci-fi that it's rightly regarded as an all time classic. I just can't see it capturing that kind of magic again no matter who they cast in the show. Personally I would have remastered the original, updated the CGI and left it there. I'm truly sorry to say this but I believe they should have left B5 well alone. It stands up just fine against anything currently on TV and I don't believe it's possible to go back and do something equally unique again. Like the Star Wars movies, the prequel trilogy in particular are not BAD films, they just never had a chance because of the incredible brilliance of the original trilogy. I'm sorry but I think this is a mistake.

This is still my favorite sci-fi show of all time and is still more fun to watch than anything else that has come along in the last 25 to 30 years. The casting from the original show was (at least in my opinion) one of the things that made the show stand out so much. The story was epic, the space battles were way ahead of their time, but the cast was really what made this a complete show. Sadly almost all of the main cast has passed away since the show went off the air, but the actors portrayal of the various characters, their chemistry on screen and the way they were able to deliver the dialogue in such a meaningful way was what really sets this show apart from a lot of other sci-fi out there. I am not sure they will ever be able to find the right personnel to make the show click the same way as the original series did, but I am very interested to see what a reboot would look like and especially to see those ships/battles come to life with modern CGI.

I'm cautiously optimistic. Listening to the DVD commentaries, JMS frequently lamented aspects of B5 - sometimes because it was the best option available due to time/budget constraints, and sometimes because he just didn't know better. That, combined with the fact that he doesn't plan to retell the exact same story, is what makes me hopeful. But at the same time, it's going to be so hard to watch without comparing to the original, which is fantastic, warts and all. The new cast will definitely have some big shoes to fill, particularly if JMS is going to bring back more characters than just Sheridan.

I was, for one, the first who witnessed Babylon 5 on CW back in 1993. It has always been my favorite television show. The series was filled with lots of details; great writing, and very believable acting and lots of easter eggs. The series was something that brought Science Fiction down to the newer generation of viewers. It also didn't insult the viewers with lots of jargon; lots of the details were believably delivered. While so of the character's like Londo Molari who looked a bit over the top theatrically. It was always the story that made the characters believable. We saw some firsts; the first use of CGI used in Science Fiction, the first use of a story not using a Warp Drive, also it showed that the good characters weren't always good, and the bad characters weren't always bad. It showed that while so people could've been less than honest about their motives, they all had the desire to see B5 work? The main reason for the reboot; is the fact that so many of the original stars have died, like it or not, but the story could continue to be told. Is it perhaps the one issue I take with JMS? It was a series that could've survived; my only hope for the reboot, is that there will be more developed stories; doing 20 stories in one season sounds easy, I just would like to see 30 stories for one season. Because you start to invest yourself in your characters; will they survive, are they happy making difficult decisions? That sort of thing? What can't be replicated is the original story; it'll require some reworking of fan favorites; I just hope that some characters comeback as guest stars? Or seeing some of the original cast members sprinkled amongst the new stars? I know that conflict makes for exciting TV, I just hope that the retelling makes the lessons learned in the first telling, more nuanced?

Normally wary of reboots of classic material, but as JSM is involved, I trust it. Few years back we had Bruce Boxleitner as a guest in our bookshop, we were chatting, I commented how when they did it, it was novel and unusual, but nowadays most big TV series are produced with story arcs rather than episodic standalones, they had really pushed that envelope long before it became common in TV production. As JSM himself said in the series "to all those who thought the Babylon Project would fail in its first year: faith manages."

I find a great deal of concern for this reboot. JMS has not had great luck when it comes to getting the resources required for his grand tales. CW is not a network that is willing to provide full investment in something as expensive as Sci-fi, and even if JMS uses the same standing set approach, he is missing a vital voice that kept him on track during the initial run: Harlan Ellison. For any good property to be successful, there needs to be a team with a shared goal, but with their own approach to debate character and plot choices so as the best ideas that serve the story survive and go into production. CW is notorious for being a network that does not have that mentality. What bothers me is that there is no reason for JMS to use the Babylon 5 name or universe for a new sci-fi show. So I am baffled as to why this project MUST be rebooted. I also find JMS's comparisons to Ronald Moore's BSG and Westworld to not be ideal. While the BSG series started off strong it really botched the last two seasons and Westworld was run by people that had no clue as to what the premise of that show (based on the original film) was, nor did they have any understanding of human psychology or AI theory. For him to draw those two as comparisons to ease fan's minds would suggest to me that JMS has drank the cool aide of modern era story telling, and given that he won't be in an environment that will counter some of the uninformed takes on society, I think that the odds will be against him when it comes to this reboot. I also wouldn't put it past CW to eject JMS out of the show after the first season if he ends up putting up a fight against the writers staff and other producers. For me this raises too many red flags. But if this show does make it to production, I will check out the pilot and see if JMS really has gotten better as a writer over time, or if this will be another CW level show. Here's hoping for the former.

As long as the network doesn't try and influence the writing as they have done with their various superhero series, causing the titular hero to play second fiddle to the pushy wife or girlfriend on the assumption that it portrayed the woman being strong. The likes of delenn and ivanova showed how a strong character should be written rather than the obnoxious opinionated nonsense that modern writers love to over use. Same goes for the ones that pander to alphabet soupers, if the only facet of someones character is that they're ticking a diversity bingo box then they're a badly written character. Unless you're writing for the porn industry, sexual preferences should be way down the list of character defining attributes.

You are aware that B5 already engaged in alphabet souping, right? Ivanova was basically Bi as her storyline originally was planed (and even shown starting) to fall in love with Talia Winters. Plus, originally, Delenn would have been a _male_ Minbari and supposed to transition to female when coming out of the Crysalis. The only reason they didnt do it was budget problems for the more extensive make up for the actress and she just sounded not very convincing when talking at a deeper male voice. Just watch the Pilot "The Gathering" again and compare it the the first episode in regard of Delenn's makeup. So, to clarify, Delenn was planned to be a transgender character - and they didnt do it for technical reasons, not political ones.

I'm just saying, that just because there is probably diversity in the reboot, the characters will still be well writen with JMS at the keyboard. Just to be worried on the whole front over potential diverse cast and characters is pointless until we see who and what their characters are going to be. Thus far JMS never was about tokenism but about characters - its his greatest strength as a writer I don't expect him to sacrifice that. Given his past experience over studio interference with Crusade for example, or Keffer [a character that was pushed on him by the studio who wanted a good looking handsome hotshot pilot to please the audience; and a character he killed off at the earlist opportunity]; he is unlikely to not have said "OK, I'll do a Reboot, but I want full control and minimal to no studio interference on what I do" - He didnt need to do a Reboot, or need the money. Look at his handling on the whole Michael O'Hare situation. When Michael was diagnozed with a mental illness, JMS offered to _shut down the show_ to get Michael the treatment he needed - and swore to keep the secret about the actors struggles a secret to Michael's grave - on behest of the actor. Michael wanted people to know what happened after his death and allowed JMS to speak out. If not for that, JMS would have taken the truth to his grave. He is that kind of a guy; and I have full confidence that whatever character he writes will grow dear to us - Alphabety or not.

Will the B5 station look the same. Or updated. Or totally different

I'm glad JMS is not doing a blow-by-blow remake. B5:TOS will always be a classic, and I'm hoping B5:TNG will take the core story concepts and characters to a new level

I'm very much looking forward to this optimistic look at the future again!!!!!!! When IT WAS on the first time i watched every single episode!!!!!!!!!! From beginning to the end!!-!!!!!!!!!! Believe me that WAS no small task!!!!!!!!!! Being that it was syndicated every episode would always run two or three times at various different times just to GET a different audience each time!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its run was at the height of syndication because cable WAS just getting started and more money WAS made by syndication!!!!!!!!! I'm so glad JMS is behind it again which means IT'S his ball again so I'M looking forward to seeing HIM score again!!!!!!!! I HOPE they use the same music and intro graphics!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm also glad that the CW is backed and bringing it to us!!!!!!!!!! I loved the ground breaking effects!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'M also hoping that they show it twice a week!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks to JMS AND CW for bringing back one OF MY all time favorite shows!!!!!!!! Good luck to ALL involved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not sure how I feel about this yet. Reboots of beloved series and franchises recently have not gone well...with a few exceptions like BSG. The fact JMS is running it gives me hope but looking at how the CW tends to handle sci fi/fantasy type shows, I have some serious doubts too. I guess all I can do is wait and see once we know more about the show and its direction.

I am still waiting to meet someone named Morden just so I can walk up to them and say 'Hello Mr Morden' like Molari.
