The hospitalizations of addicts with oozing sores and unhealed abrasions are at a crisis point. With all the people coming and going through downtown on their way to work or visiting Seattle, to pass group after group of people bent over passed out or smoking fumes off a piece of tinfoil, it is something that needs changing. Arrests won't help, would detox and treatment? Idk, but its bad. Its been bad. Its depressingly bad.

The problem is they expect all of these addicts to recover the same way and that’s just not realistic. If they get caught with a little dope, then they send them to a rehab where they are detoxed cold turkey and just go to N/A meetings where 95% of them end up relapsing. They should offer the person other options of rehabilitation…like methadone, suboxone, etc. (which have a much higher rate of long term success).

How about making drug possession a felony again and stop with all the "drugs gave people mental illness" crap? Before I got sober, I couldn't have used that excuse. The courts would've laughed in my face.

So overpopulate jails and make tax payers pay tons of money to incarcerate non violent offenders that get caught with a small amount of dope? Addiction is not a criminal problem, it’s a mental health problem.

Blah blah blah….took a year to say what even visitors see in those parts of the city. How about open up mayor fancy office for shelter as she can work from home then.

inside and outside of permanent supportive housing... well, there you go 1:28 how about we cancel the source of the problem and spend the money on jails?

If anything, college education is a source of many addictions.

It's not even about Drug overdoses that we care about, it's PUBLIC DRUG USE. To focus only on drug overdoses does little to nothing to help any of us law-abiding taxpayers to change the perception and experience of the downtown area.

What they need now is to set up a committee to study the audit. Rinse and repeat.

Not sure how they should do this, but if they care, they should be ready to finance a mandatory drug treatment program for all chronic users that are caught.

All the while, people are shooting up while a cop walks on by......

Not one word of letting law enforcement do massive drug dealer sweaps.

YOU GIVE THEM FREE MONEY AND FREE CLEAN NEEDLES. I HAVE A NEWBORN AND GOT DENIED ASSISTANCE THEN I GO INTO QFC AND SEE ALL THESE TWEAKERS PULLING CASH OUT FOR DRUGS. UNBELIEVABLE

But those clean needles have lowered the spread of hep c by 30%. And tax payers don’t have to spend as much to hospitalize and treat these ppl as long as the spread is decreasing. Honestly, they shouldn’t be using…but you also shouldn’t be getting pregnant unless you knew you could fully afford and care for that child in every aspect. I guess nobody is perfect.

It's not that simple. When were you last in Seattle? I've lived here 20 years and since 2020 much of the unhoused people with addictions have moved to these few "hot spots," mostly in downtown. That leaves 99% of the rest of Seattle to thrive, as it is doing to one degree or another. But yes, as Sara Nelson said, these hot spots have to be dealt with and now.

No-Rescue areas exist in our national parks. Maybe we can make little "Escape From New York" neighborhoods, where they agree they don't want any help.

If you don't know 12th and Jackson is a hotbed for this, you're not a Seattleite.

How many elected officials have invested in Narcan and Naloxone and how many have family sitting on the boards of companies supplying it? The answer is more than zero.

They need more recovery support like gamblers at Emeral Queen need financial support. Do they? Do they NEED taxpayer support? Or are we seeing that paying for housing for drug addicts only increases drug use and other escapism habits.

Talk is over. I saw plenty cars getting towed, but open drug use being tolerated. It's horrible. So the law is only for ppl who can pay for the consequences.

For a while they changed the drug possession laws from felony to a misdemeanor if the user was deemed a threat. The cops hands were tied in what they could do.
