Swimming an IM is hard and the key is not to over-exert yourself in the beginning especially in the fly stroke, its an insanely tiring swim regardless if its 200/400. As the stroke always changes and each swimmer has a different strength at each particular stroke its important to balance it out. Andrews went out so hard in the first 150m that he didnt have enough reserve for the freestyle. Pretty sure he swam a 29s coming home

  • @swimfan752

It’s not even the race strategy it’s the training. He does a training style called USRPT ( ultra short race pace training ) and so he doesn’t have the aerobic capacity to compete in anything beyond 100m. Well obviously he’s still fantastic but he could be the world record holder here

This clip was heavily edited for very obvious reasons and much of the live footage was not used. I remember the live footage had focus on MA thru out the first 3 laps and Wang Shun was hardly in any shot. When they realised MA was failing at the final turn and obviously not going to place they quickly shifted the camera away from him and shifted focus on all lanes. I recall there was a closeup of the last 5m and it showed MA, being so near the camera, decelerated so much I thought he was going to stop right b4 touching the wall.

If you look at all his races (does not matter which stroke he is swimming), you will notice that he swims with a lot of steam in the first lap but moves like a turtle in the last lap. He is only good for 50 meters at best. This is what happens when the coach and the swimmer do not understand physiology or apply science to the sport of swimming. His American record in breaststroke is for juniors.
