Whew, relieved the $38 I sent to Ali Express for this thing wasn't a mistake. Great review, especially the detail about the materials. I'm surprised they are clear about that. I have reservations about the ethics but this is how I frame it: I don't know which multi tool that is right for me long term, or even if there is one I want to stick to. So I don't want to spend $150 to "try out" one that I won't end up using all the time. I got this surge clone and a wave clone to be able to place decent emergency tools in cars etc but also as cheap trials. If end up really liking one of them over the rest I'll happily pay a premium price for the LM as my new main tool.

I don't think there is much of an ethical issue since Surges patents have expired and this doesn't try to pose as authentic Leatherman product. One point to remember is when you are buying Surge or any other Leatherman you get their amazing warranty and that might be worth the extra hundred dollar bill provided you don't lose the tool. I have all generations of Waves and Surge and found Surge to be tad too large for every day carry while also being too expensive to go in my travel tool kit so it lives in garage while I have Wave on my belt. This seems to be really good candidate to throw in said tool kit because of ability to use standard bits and t shank saw blades.

It's legitimate to copy the design of the Leatherman Surge. It was introduced 20 years ago, so the patent has already expired. While Leatherman could attempt to prevent the copycat by reducing the price, it didn't. This clone is actually a boon for most of us who are on a tight budget. Can you imagine that Leatherman charges $229.95 for the new Arc? It's no longer the Leatherman for ordinary people. I just ordered another Leatherman Surge clone, Bibury 31-in-one multitool. I already have Leatherman Bolster and Leatherman Charge+ TTI, I think I will have no more Leatherman.

The differences between the two are minimal, the blades and handles on the DL30 are approximately 0.2mm thinner and the edges on the DL30 are not quite as well smoothed as the Surge. Is it aluminum in the bottom because my magnet doesn't even try to stick down there, definitely a different bit holder than my other Diacamping dl1 and if the dl1 had that blade exchanger it would be perfect because it has a pocket clip and is the size of the wave with outside scissors..

But I got an idea, I wanted to make my own Gerber armbar. So I took the DL1 apart and and swapped some of the outside tools. Now I have a true center locking bit driver, ruler, serrated blade, and file and man it works perfectly. So I think I am going to do the same with the DL30 but have the scissors and the t-shank adapter with the locking bit driver and I can change some stuff on my Gerber CD and not have any duplicate tools. Idk if the armbar just had a locking bit driver and a halfway decent pair of scissors I would just get that but maybe next year Gerber will fix their stuff but I am not counting on it so I am willing to pay to make my own from other tools

Yes an use better steels,we don't live in the dark ages an especially since we're already paying high dollar anyway, I wished since surge an st 300 an wave plus an charge tti plus are some of the best ones, they should like the charge series made surge an st 300 an waves with cp3v blades or s35 or s35vn,something that holds an edge longe, more durable, I mean I use my main a lot cutting mainly food prep, still razor sharp,I've stroped it a bit,but better steels would be way to go,I don't think Leatherman would be hurting if they done it in first place, they sell to many models to be hurting

Whatever reason seems like it's too tight to fit my normal bits into it. Is anybody else having the same problem? Is it just a defect with mine? I like spring-loaded pliers on a smaller plier multitool, easier to neutrally grip, and I feel by definition of how you generally use those smaller pliers it is helpful. On any midrange or large multitool I absolutely hated it at work. Too many situations where I need like three hands on a heavy duty project in a cramped spot and I just need to use my plier hand to position something but I can't because that hand has to fully invest in holding the pliers or not holding them, no in-between. It also causes hand fatigue with the larger plier weight when doing any job for more than 10-15 min of work. I imagine that having to hold the object and the back spring force is the same as squeezing on those gym hand springs. Ever since I started to edc a leatherman signal I really began to notice the improvement of not having that spring for me and the fact that I can sometimes reposition or readjust my hands without completely letting go of my grip. Also, if I want them open or want to sort of reset what I am doing I can do so with a hand gesture.

I think the patents on the surge have expired recently, so it is about as ethical as any Chinese made tool is. Knockoffs are only inherently unethical when they steal protected intellectual property. Everyone eventually using technology from expired patents after the inventor has had a reasonable period of time to profit is one of the major goal of patent laws.

Honestly I would rather not pay more for harder steal except maybe the blade and if it results in way better movement of the parts. Though the gold standard of slick movement is the Swiss Tool though and that's not a super high end steel. Personally I would rather have a softer steel on the blade anyway because it's easier to sharpen because I suck at sharpening harder blades but am fairly good at getting a soft blade to "decent sharpness" quickly.

Just received mine. Definitely disappointed by the quality, even though I obviously wasn't expecting anything close to the original at this price point. Every part feels rough on the edges and flimsy. The file is wobbly when folded. I wouldn't say it's worth $35. I have a Mossy Oak I got for $20 that feels 10x more premium.

"Is it as good? ABOSULTE NOT!" -- nice assertion but no substance whatsoever to the claim. Surge is made of 420c, which is is cheap low-end USA stainless steel, verses cheap low-end 3cr13mov (equivalent to 420 for tool usage, but bad for blades) and inexpensive 7cr17mov (better steel than 420 for knife blades, as 420 only has approx. HALF the carbon content of 7cr17mov). Leatherman IS in trouble since they made the switch to cheap steel (used to be 154CM for knife blades, a great steel), sometime after the first Waves, simply because they have chosen to charge more for cheaper steel. China is making their products from equivalent steel, not somehow worse steel, and selling for a fraction of the price. That is indeed a royally major problem for Leatherman corp. Either Leatherman switches to better steel, or they lose all but the diehard users who buy, not because of quality, but because of brand name. For the Chinese steels, the first number denotes carbon content (.35% in this case), so you know that 3cr steel is approximately equivalent to 420 (.46%) for hardness, equivalent in strength, and greater in toughness. Better for pliers. 7cr13mov is a superior knife steel in comparison to 420hc. BOTH are cheap steels, it is just that the 420 is more liable to bend and not snap (I.E. toughness... think Pakistan steel), won't get as sharp (less carbon and larger steel grain size), and won't hold an edge as long (less abrasion resistance). You want toughness and strength in pliers, while you want hardness and strength in knife blades or bits. Then add in Leatherman's proprietary everything...

If you need something as tough and well-made as a Surge, buy a Surge. Buy once, cry once. It'll last a lifetime. Also, I prefer Leatherman's proprietary bits. They're slim, thin and that means I can easily EDC a two-panel bit-kit in a Leatherman pouch behind the tool. With enough bits to literally cover pretty much everything out there. Sure, if you use only one or two bits, a double-headed 3-dimensional traditional bit is going to be a bit more useful. But truth is, the only reason why Leatherman's competitors make fun of those proprietary bits is because they didn't think of them nor patent them, first.
