Model updates: One of Europe’s favourite all-rounders gets a well-rounded evolution: more power for the engine, plus higher redline and revised gearbox ratios, which come hand-in-hand with Throttle By Wire management, 3 riding modes and refined, expanded Honda Selectable Torque Control. Its renowned fuel efficiency is maintained, and a full 6kg has been shaved from the kerb weight. A redesigned frame is clothed in sharper-edged styling, the unique up-front storage compartment is usefully larger and seat height 30mm lower. The Dual Clutch Transmission variant continues to offer a technology unique to Honda on two wheels. A new screen, LED lighting and LCD dash round out the update.
Model Overview
2,8kW more peak power(arround 58 HP) for the NC750X’s EURO5-spec engine, plus an extra 500rpm to the redline are the headline changes, thanks to work on valve timing and intake/exhaust efficiency. Shorter ratios for first, second and third gears smarten response while a slipper clutch reduces lever load and keeps the ride smooth on rapid downshifts.
Throttle By Wire (TBW) brings with it adjustable engine character through 3 default rider modes - RAIN, STANDARD and SPORT plus a customisable USER mode. Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) now has a finer level of input over 3 levels, while the Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) option features Automatic shifting schedules that integrate with the riding modes, as well as USER control.
The other attention-grabber is the 6kg weight loss, thanks to a new frame and detail improvements around the engine and bodywork.
The 2021 NC750X will be available in the following colour options:
Grand Prix Red NEW
Mat Ballistic Black Metallic
Pearl Glare White
Glint Wave Blue Metallic
3.1 Engine
Throttle By Wire and an extra 3kW peak power: 43.1kW with 69Nm torque
Shorter first three gear ratios for sportier feel, plus an extra 600rpm to the redline
Slipper clutch reduces lever load 20%, manages rear wheel on down changes
EURO5 compliant, with 28.3km/l possible (WMTC mode)
35kW A2 licence version available
Also for 2021, thanks to a finely balanced delay to valve timing (which also now differs between the two cylinders), plus addition of Throttle By Wire (TBW) and improvements to the exhaust, the engine makes more power and revs harder for longer to the new 7,000rpm redline. Alongside the power hike it holds onto an increased torque output for longer above 5,000rpm.
Peak power is raised 3kW to 43.1kW @ 6,750rpm, with maximum torque of 69Nm @ 4,750rpm.
The addition of a slipper clutch for 2021 reduces lever load by 20% and manages rear-wheel lock up under fast down changes of the manual 6-speed gearbox while decelerating.
3.2 Engine Electronics
Throttle By Wire delivers 3 default riding modes, plus USER customisation
Honda Selectable Torque Control features much finer control, and 3 levels of intervention
Also new is the full-colour LCD dash, which allows management of the riding modes through the selection switch on the left handlebar. The rear indicators now have an Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) function.
The indicators also auto-cancel; rather than using a simple timer, the system compares front and rear wheel speed difference and calculates when to cancel the indication relative to the situation.
The rear monoshock features a spring preload adjuster system with 120mm travel, from 150mm.
Ground Clearance (mm) 145 mm vs 165 mm !

Better headlights. Bigger storage. Improved the dash... I think they did a great job improving an already great bike.

it's a cheap ass upgrade. it needed better handlebars to improve the position, smart features on the dashboard, inertial sensor system (with abs cornering) to avoid the bike changing gears during turns, double front disk, more power... 58hp is ridiculous in 2021,should have been at least 70hp

Honda are in a difficult position. If they change the NC too much then people will say it is no longer an NC; if they only slightly change it then people will say that it is just the same old NC but at a higher price. Things I like with the new version:- New speedo (so long as it is clearer than the existing LCD in daylight) Slipper clutch New headlight (I don't think the existing LED headlight is good in daylight riding) Things I don't like:- Shorter 1-3 gears (If I wanted faster acceleration I would buy a sportier bike) Horn button still in wrong position (they got it right in the 1960s/70s - why change?) Still no external fuel filler (annoying when carrying luggage on seat) It would be interesting to know if they have improved the seat slope / seat padding (they have not listened so far; will they ever?) I doubt I would change my NC for this new version but that is a mark of how good the last NC was/is.

@Donaldo I have a 2018 NC with manual gearbox and find the existing ratios perfectly OK. It might just be me but shorter gears 1-3 will be too low and be frustrating to use. The NC is a brilliant bike and hopefully this new one keeps the character of the old model.

Thank you for this detailed overview. This was never going to fill the gap in the adventure range between the CB500X and the Africa Twin. We will have to wait for the rumoured baby Africa Twin for that. Given its target market - those looking for an economical and very practical commuter/touring motorcycle - price is going to be crucial.

  • @stevebolton8471

Thinking about the comments on here about making the NC more of an Adventure road bike. This makes sense if there is a mid-range Africa Twin on the way. The lower seat height means they don't have to continue the S model and the NC carries on as an off-road capable bike that is equally comfortable as a mid range economical commuter.

I've been told that the motor on the NC750X delivers power much like a big bore American cruiser. This bike seems to be a good bargain. It also stands somewhat alone in the market place bc there is no bike that shares its characteristics. To me the bike is best suited for a long relaxed tour bc the motor cruises at low rpms and uses so little fuel. Cheers!

Good review on the new specs! Bike looks good, but I am disappointed. A better swingarm, proper engine upgrade and at least the same ride height would have been preferable. I like some of the mods. I use my 2014 model mainly for two-up touring, so a decent power upgrade would be nice. I love the NC too much to buy an Africa Twin, so I'll probably stick with mine for now.

The problem with Honda accessories is the ridiculously high prices. I agree that these new boxes look really well integrated with the new styling - much better than before. Those boxes will be significantly more expensive than what's available in the after market. After dinging you for the boxes Honda dings you some more with the overly expensive carriers and locks. The Shad aftermarket boxes look pretty nice but they are way less money. Maybe they will come out with a road ready version with the boxes and bars included as a package for a somewhat lower cost. Those lights are ridiculously expensive, too. I would definitely go after market for the lights.

Great & VERY informative video, as was your previous review of the 2019 NC750X model, & your related Top 10 upgrade recommendations for the same bike. However, with so many excellent and often pricey accessories available, notwithstanding storage related additions/improvements, I find myself wondering at what point would it be better to take say $4000 - $5000 of potential upgrades for a new NC750X, and redirect those funds toward the purchase of a better, much more capable, Honda model like a base model Africa Twin.

  • @IdealBike

Thanks a lot for watching my videos, really appreciate your comment! This its a great topic and a very pertinent question. I would say, if the bike its offering a great all in all package like our NC750X then it worth spending another 2000$ for some upgrades and keep the bike for a longer period of time and take the most out of it can offer. If you would like more off road capable bike, then the money should go for another bike like the new 2022 Transalp or CRF850 (we dont know exacly what Honda its planning with this middleweight adventure bike).

Watching from the USA. Europe gets updated models one or more years sooner than we do in the USA, usually, so I don't expect to see this new model in the USA for a year or two, at least. Question: It appears there is an additional headlight in the "beak," under the LED headlight. Perhaps this light is designed to address a problem I have with the current version: cornering at night. The headlight emits a bright, but horizontal, beam of light. Fine for straight roads. But when leaning into a turn, the horizontal beam leans into the curve, creating blind spots. This calls for "leaning lights" or a better distributed led headlight beam. I had the previous NC700, which had not yet adopted the LED headlight, and there was no problem in the turns.

I like it. The improvements make sense for me, but I hoped for more. I thought of the new engine with even more power (66HP+) which patents were in media. Also a TFT dashboard with integration should be offered. Smartphone navigation on the instuments seems to get standard, Triumph and Royal Enfield have it on multiple models already, Kawasaki offers a nice TFT in Z650, Honda seems here behind :( Maybe this will come in the next evolution step. Being more streetbike is no problem for me, even a plus. Lets be honest, that bit gravel road that most adventurebike owners call offroad can be also done on a NC750S with road tires. That is also the same for the NC power. Of course more is always better, but to be honest even the current 54HP are more then enough to have fun and to loose driver license quickly. As the rumors of a new Honda adventurebike , smaller then africa twin, exist a offroad NC750X would be a close oponnent to it... undesired for honda. I thought of introducing a NC800S street/naked and a NC800X "Transalp". Now it looks like we have a merged NC750X "Deauville" which is ok for me ... we will see what will be added in future. Also I would love to get more comfort features of a X-ADV /Forza on a NC, being completely aware of a higher price... Keyless, Doublefrontdisc brake, adjustable windshield... Again: the updates are nice. But for most NC owners maybe not enough to get a new one. The gear ratios however... I am not sure if this makes sense on the manual transmission. In the lower gears The NC reached the limiter already quite fast. Yes it can now rev higher, but as the gear ratio is shorter... It will accelerate likely faster but again fast in limiter. On the higher gears however... the 6th is already slightly to much. The VMAX will be reached in the 5th most likely i the future.

I owned a 2015 NC750X DCT model and now the 2019 model. The only thing that wolud really make me think of upgrading for this new model, is that ride height of 800 mm that translates in better handling. But at a cost of a lower ground clearence, I don't think it's a better trade. Oh well, I gess you can't have everything. Sure Honda is concentrating it's efforts on deviating this motorbike from adventure role to a more road/commute bike. That's a shame and really tells their intentions about a new model to fill the gap they are creating on purpose. Also, the initial essence of an affordable motorbike that can deal with almost all our needs of commute and fun travel, is further and further away at this (expected) price tag. All in all, i don't think there are enough reasons to justify the updrading.

Luis, just let's be patient and wait for the 2022 new Honda Transalp/ 850 Africa Twin. I've spoken with the dealer and all the informations are leading to 2022 for what we are all expecting. 2020 was a difficult year for everyone all over the world. It would have been a difficult challenge for Honda to compete with the already established other brands when it comes to middleweight adventure bike... Just think about Tenere 700, 850 GS and KTM Adventure 790.

The more upgrades the more difficult it is for Honda to keep the price down, be careful what you wish for. ,

Disappointed big time. I hoped the NC750X would have gone more AT : better suspensions (like the X Adv for example) for more off road capabilities. Instead, it went more Tracer 700 way, which is essentially a road bike on which, I have no doubt, it performs well.

Very impressive review of specs IdealBike I put a link of your video in the 2021 NC topic of our forum in France This 2021 update is the most important evolution since this model launch in 2012. I find it of course very attractive as often when a brand shows is brand new model. For me the most important evolution have not been done : comfort What about the new suspension that have been lowered, what about the seat that seems the same, what about the wind protection that seems to not bring improvement... Comfort which was a weakness have been forgotten 😢🙁

not a bad thing. this way with a lower seat, shorter people can buy it, also 99% of people only use this bike on city roads

They reduced the seat height 30mm by cutting corners and shortening the front suspension travel by 30mm. I see that as more of a disadvantage for a lot of riders buying this bike. Power increase in upper rev range likely to affect the mid range negatively which is where most of us NC riders use this bike. And lastly....where is the CRUISE control?!?!? Come on Honda.....

Silnik, zawieszenie, napęd i koła te same.

Automatic, trottle by wire and no cruise control. Wtf. Honda? Are you sleeping. In 2020 this is ridicules to say the least. You lost one potential customer for your 750X
