Nevsky Solitaire Command Deck System - Playthrough | GMT Games | Levy & Campaign - Episode 2

Ойындар

We continue our playthrough of Nevsky, the game of Teutons & Rus in collision, 1240-1242. In this video, we discuss a command deck creation system for solitaire play, and use it to prepare the Command Decks for our current playthrough of the game.
The game is published by GMT Games and designed (designer) by Volko Runhke. This is the first game in the Levy & Campaign Series.

    Awesome system! Can’t wait to see how it unfolds. Was looking for reviews of Nevsky and came across the first video. At the 7 minute mark you convinced me and I bought it! Haha I’m strictly a solo player when it comes to historical but I can dream of convincing a friend to play some historical with me one day 😂. Great vid

    Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video/system, and I hope you enjoy the game! I might tweak the numbers for winter/rasputista as I go forward, and I'll explain about edge cases like how I think I'll handle lieutenants too. I'd be curious to hear how you like the game once you get a chance to play a couple of times!

    Excellent idea for solo play! The one thing you "know" for sure from your first example is that there's only 1 card of a specific lord. So once he comes out, he's not going again. One way to keep that uncertainty is to not allow yourself to remove all cards of a lord in the "removal phase". Another way would be to use your system, but pick 7 cards in total. Then after randomizing them all down the line, remove one random card (d8 or whatever).

    I just had another thought about your solo system. The way yours works, it's harder to plan to cross the border and get back "home", since the number of cards in the deck for a given lord is semi-random. A simple way around this is to select only 2 of the randomized cards AND a pass card. Scramble the cards the normal way. When the pass card comes up, it acts as a wild, able to activate any lord.

  • @ZillaBlitz

    @ZillaBlitz

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes, the inability to plan to come back home is something that came up as I played through this scenario. I found myself holding back on crossing the border because I didn't want to get stuck on the other side and not be able to get back. I think it's something I talk about in an upcoming episode, at some point. I had a rough idea, similar to yours, about what you could do for the last activation, so that you could play a lord across the border and be certain you could bring him back.

    I agree that the absolute HEART of Levy & Campaign is this Campaign phase and trying to out-maneuver your opponent. Everything else is sort of preparation and logistics. (Of course, logistics is important, but its whole purpose is to allow a victorious campaign.) I think too many people get lost in all of those "levy" rules and miss the fact that the game is actually very simple and fun in the campaign phase.

  • @ZillaBlitz

    @ZillaBlitz

    Good points, yes. And yet screw up the levy or logistics and all of a sudden your men are starving and leave you in the middle of a campaign. :)

  • @laufetc

    @laufetc

    Absolutely true. But, I'm afraid (perhaps wrongly), that too many potential players get lost in the logistics stuff and give up learning the game. (I had a friend who long time ago stated: "supply rules ruin the game!" I totally disagreed with him, but I see a similar attitude in a lot of players.) The rules are not exactly easy for gamers to get into, and most players need someone to show them how "easy" the game really is to play. (Not necessarily easy to play well !)

    I wondered about the depth and replayability with the limited number of lords on the map at one time, but there is an unfolding complexity to the system, where just a couple of moves seems to send the decision-making in a whole new direction, and with six scenarios in the box, I feel like there is good value. The solitaire deck-creation system (for solo play at least) seems to broaden things as well, as it's leading my play into operations I wouldn't have considered otherwise.

    @@ZillaBlitz I like solo systems where the opponent plays as close to how a human plays as possible. Your system does a much better job than GMT's CDG Solo System, but I wonder if it could be used for Commands and Colors: Ancients.

    @@kirksellman1999Ha! Funny timing. My first Commands & Colors game, (Ancients), just arrived yesterday. :) I'll have to think about that as I dig into it. I have the CDG Solo #1, so am hoping to try that with the game as well. ~ My main goal with this was to introduce some unpredictability in the gameflow when playing solo. It's more of a semi-solo system, tbh, as you're playing both sides, but it breaks that 100% knowledge of what the next acting lord will be. I think the Men of Iron Tri-Pack does this with its shifting initiative system as well. You're never quite sure what's going to happen next.

    It's still on the list of things to do, unfortunately. The two things I wanted to tweak were the number of cards for each season and adding an option to give each side more of a defined selection for the last card. The issue with the way it was in this series was that I was hesitant to cross over into enemy lines toward the end of a season because I didn't want the unit to get stuck unable to return and muster. If I knew I had another card from the same leader in the stack, I wouldn't have that fear. I wanted to work out a simple way to make it so you could alter the selection on the last card. It might have been just as simple as on the last card you can accept the last card or any of the other cards you had originally selected.

    My pleasure, if you do give it or have given it a try, I'd be curious to hear what you think of it. The only thing I wanted to fundamentally change was the last card option, so that the acting player would have a bit more options for sending a unit into enemy territory toward the end of the turn. I'm kind of itching to play another Levy & Campaign game, too, so maybe I can mess with the system and make another playthrough with a different game. It'd be after March at the earliest, but it would be fun to do.

    I feel like playing actual 2 player and using this card selection process would be entertaining. Make for tension during sieges and "have to move x far to save the day" situations. Stuff like that.

  • @ZillaBlitz

    @ZillaBlitz

    2 жыл бұрын

    Interesting. I hadn't thought about that. In actual 2-player you get some of that tension because the decks are set at the beginning of the campaign phase, so as the campaign unfolds the order and selection of cards comes into play. Having the right lord come into play at just the right time can be a huge benefit.

  • @ZillaBlitz

    @ZillaBlitz

    Thanks! I think so. The biggest thing would be determining the ratio of to include/exclude, as it will change depending on how many leaders there are, and how long each season is. So it would need some numbers tweaking/testing to work for more commanders and different seasonal length. At some point in the summer I hope to come back to this and explore Almoravid and Inferno with it. :)
